Former FOX94.9 PD Warren Williams Dies In LA

Former FOX94.9 PD Warren Williams Dies In LA

Warren Williams, program director of the original WOXF-FM (Fox 94.9) classic hits station owned by Hoker Broadcasting in the late 1980s and early 1990s, died in Los Angeles Sunday. Hoker sold the call letters, format and intellectual property to Jacor in 1995, which transferred the format to the current 92.5 (replacing WPPT-FM, The Point).

Warren programmed a great product at the Fox which I was proud to be a part of selling. Back in those days we had a lot fun giving EBN a run for the money. Our industry and his family lost a good man.

Weren't the calls WOFX? I remember it being at 94.9. I believe once the sale went down they flipped to Smooth Jazz as "The Wave".

Huge loss. Warren gave me my first big break as a tx reporter followed by a full time shift on The Fox. I'll always be grateful for the opportunities he afforded me as well as the invaluable guidance.

I also recall them as WOFX. FCC shows it that way as well.

Re: Former FOX94.9 PD Warren Williams Dies In LA

Yes, the call letters were WOFX, Fairfield-Cincinnati.

Did you really expect to get correct details from Kiesewetter?

Hoker didn't sell the call letters and format to Jacor, either. Heritage Media owned them, and had for several years when they sold the format and switched to The WAVE in 1995.

John's not one for details.

Re: Former FOX94.9 PD Warren Williams Dies In LA

Yep. Sold the calls to Heritage Media. Of course, during our first meeting with the new owners, we were told the staff would be kept in place and the format would not change. Granted, I was naive at the time. The Wave was a joke. Warren (followed by Joe Zerhusen), had a smokin' format going prior to Heritage Media's dismantelment (if that's a word) of the station. Too bad Heritage (an arm of Hallmark Cards) had no forsight. I have warm memories of my time while on Warren's (and Joe's) watch. 'EBN knew we were a force to be reckoned with. They (Jacor) partied like drunken Irishmen at a wake when the calls were sold and the station flipped.
