It seems obvious to me that if radio wants to prosper, at least for now, it behooves them to market their formats to people who already include radio in their lives. Obviously, they will need to crack the younger demo as well if radio is to sustain itself, but the quick fix is to go after the aging boomers.

Commercial radio can kiss off the 60+ audience...................... they haven't programmed (music) to that audience for ages. Those listeners are long gone and would be difficult to get back.
 
I would wager that commercial radio has never programmed to 60+! It's just that in the past, younger listeners' tastes were much closer to theirs.

true. but kfrc was actually starting to sound pretty good musically. they went to the '70's songs and it sounded a lot less ooooold

wish they would have kept it up-now we gotta listen to max who is not all that great but at least they play some different music

I think it is a personal matter. A lot of people like myself are content to be comfortably well off. That's not to say they are rolling in cash, but they aren't worried about where their next meal is coming from either. Being the #15 station could do that for you. You won't get insanely rich, but you could be "comfy," and sleep well at night.

Then there are those who must be #1 at all cost. Call it greed if you like. It is the way most business is conducted and radio is just another business. I think that is too bad. A lot of people are missing some of the better things in life because they are obsessed with the almighty dollar. I've found that doing a good job at something you love will bring its own rewards, both monetarily and in terms of enjoying life. There is nothing enjoyable about ulcers.....

None of us are getting out of this alive, so sometimes it pays to be a little less obsessed with money and a little more concerned with life.
