Former WKZL (70's) announcer... who?

Hey,

The post about Terrie Knight got me thinking... I remember back in the 70s when KZL was AOR, there was an announcer there that was pretty popular. I can't remember her name, but for some reason I almost think she was Kaedy Kiley (96-Rock and Z93 Atlanta).

Is that who it was? Did Kaedy Kiley go from KZL to 96-Rock? Or... was there another female jock at KZL that I might have the names mixed up? It seems to me she had a sort of unusual name, with a strange spelling. Maybe that's why I think it was Kaedy.

I did a short stint at 98.7 (then WRQK) in '78. I was "Ron Holiday" (yawn). I think it may have been around that time.

Anybody remember who it could be?

Kitty Kelley, I think. She was smoking, and went to the video tv channel here in the Triad, after that??

Whoops -- Kitty Kelley was expose author. I think the previous post is right.

The former 'KZL jock who went to the Triad video channel in the mid-80s, then to WRDU in Raleigh was/is Kitty Kinnin. She's in Wilmington now.

Are you the Amos who came to WRQK with Boo Barron?

i wasn't there long, but it sure is depressing to see the shape of the meadowview rd penthouse studios. did we know each other?

Amos: I was thinking about you a few months ago! Yes we know each other I did morning's! I would wake you up so you could drive back home before the GM came in after you worke several shifts over the weekend! Late 70's are early 80's.

Wes

Wes...

I stumbled on this site by accident and glad I did. Don't know if you'll remember me -- I was at WRQK for a brief time in the early 80s. Tom Armshaw took a liking to me and put me on in afternoons for a while. I was very young and absolutely awful. I eventually left, got better at radio, and ended up working in Chicago...now in Milwaukee.

When I was there, it was right around the time of the sale to AH Robins. Tom Collins was PD for a while (so were you). You were doing mornings with Willie Edwards...a guy named Don Geronimo (not the "real" one -- I think his name was Tom Underwood) was there. Finnegan had gone to Z-93. I did nights for a while, too.

Jim Krasula and Ralph Shaw did news, so did Carol Kline (what a class act she was).

I've often wondered what happened to the old RQK crew. Armshaw...you and Willie...Larry Allen. Tom's son. Stormy the dog. Mark Ward (Donaldson). Arvin (WPET). Is the building still there? I remember one afternoon being on the air during a bad storm and being terrified sitting in that trailer perched atop the brick original building. Stormy sitting at my feet, slobbering. Yikes.

I went by Bruce Summers on the air there.

Hope this note finds you well.

That was a pretty good airstaff and station back then -- Doug Paul was the PD and "voice" of the station -- he spent most of the 90s with his voice all over the place... the late Chuck Holloway in mornings... JJ Hemingway was on the air there, too ... he's in Seattle now. They were AAA 20 years before it was a format ...then they became "North Carolina's Best Rock" under PD Tom Daniels ... their first CHR PD (when Nationwide had 'em) was Tom Collins, who I think is still in the market there.

;D Surley Not Wilburrrrrrrrr Moss AKA Tom Collins?

One and the same. I really enjoyed working for Tom -- he taught me a lot and had great stories about Chicago and Detroit days.

Wes...they've found you out! Now this is an interesting thread.

BarneyPip,

Hello Jim from down here in the South. I wondered what happened to you! I understand from another thread you are in Milwaukee, now.
Keep warm.

As for the old RQK crew, Wes is doing mornings at Legends Country 98-3...Willie is doing mornings at 1440 WLXN...Tom Collins is manager there at LXN/94-1 WHTZ. Finn-man is at LXN and HTZ doing news. As for Jim Krasula, he is a contract reporter for CBS News and he is based out of Greensboro. Don't know where Carol Kline of Don Geronimo are. I understand that Stormy died.

As for the building on West Meadowview, it's empty. Entercom bought 98-7 and PET and they are located in Air Park West off Highway 68.

Don't know where the other folks are, now.

As for me, I'm out of the biz. Gone into trucking!!! At least there are job openings and you DO get calls from prospective employers instead of sending resumes and air checks and NEVER hearing anything. You say--TRUCKING!!! Yeah, I have a bunch of truckers in my family--so it's only natural for me to follow that route. There's great money in the world of "wheel-turning" and great benefits, as well. Those two items are something that broadcasting forgot about a long time ago...just like the industry has pretty much forgotten a lot of "dinosaur" broadcasters.

Take care up North!

finn man is a on saturdays and sundays at majic 94.1. Bob Mahoney does news for wlxn and majic 94 1. With a voice like yours you should be on the air...not in a truck. Good luck with it anyway.

You're right...it's Mahoney doing news! My mistake! Trying to do too many things at once. As for Steve, he used to be over at MAG as producer for Flynn, as well as doing traffic. I wish them both the very best!!!

I'm kinda staying in the business...but as a contract, private party
D-J. Got a lot of Christmas parties this month. But that will dry-up come January.

Wish I could have stayed in radio. But my needs were too narrow.
I need to stay in Central N-C because my Mom is in a rest home with dementia. We also put my mother-in-law in a rest home this year.
So, my wife and I need to be nearby.

Guess I would rather be driving and making money rather than driving over 50-thousand miles in my private vehicle each year not making squat for those miles. Also, if a job came-up...let's say in Kansas...I wouldn't and couldn't go there because of the family commitments.

It's just too bad a lot of us "old-timers" in North Carolina radio don't have more and better outlets to pick from!

Dr. News --

Bruce Summers (real name Bruce Cole here). There -- I've de-cloaked. I'm glad you found a way to stay in NC and that life works, and sorry your mother is struggling. You are an outstanding newscaster. I hope some programmer in central NC is lurking here and finds a way to work you into what they're doing. You and Jim Krasula and Carol Kline were three class acts and great talent at WRQK. I hear Krasula all the time doing reports for CBS News.

My first job in radio was when I was18 years old, at Z-93. Johnny Michaels was PD/mornings at the time and hired me. I was cleaning toilets and sweeping up lead dust in the Douglas Battery plant in W-S the summer of '81 when he called and hired me to run the "God squad" and Casey Casem on Sunday mornings. I eventually worked into a real on-air job there (overnights and weekends). Michaels was a great jock from KNUS and KVIL and KLUV in Dallas. Too bad he didn't stick longer. Bob Mahoney became the PD. He was my first real mentor in the business -- not sure he'd even remember me. He was a blast to work with -- used to take me to lunch at some drive-in up on Peters Creek Parkway near I-40. In 82 I moved across the street to WRQK. Steve Finnegan (who I thought sounded fantastic -- a WROV Roanoke alum) had been doing nights at RQK and moved across to Z-93. I took the opening at RQK. Then Tom Collins came on board as PD, RQK was sold to AHRobins, and it was a weird place to work at that time. I did afternoons for a while, but was new in the business and wasn't really very good. Eventually moved back to nights and then left to move to the Chicago area to be closer to family.

I landed a job at a suburban Chicago radio station as PD/am drive. Right place at the right time. George Beasley bought the station, we took the signal and studios to downtown Chicago, I got to stay, and all of a sudden was PD and morning man in market #3. Worked in Chicago radio until 1991, then worked as a PD in Greenville-Spartanburg until 1994 -- went to seminary, became a Lutheran minister.

Now -- 2006 -- got tired of "working" in churches, missed radio, and am back on the air in Milwaukee (for ClearChannel). Would love to live in the Carolinas again someday. My brother is one of the owners of Foothills Brewing Co. in Winston.

When I worked at RQK -- I think the staff was -- at first -- Wes & Willy in the morning, not sure about middays, Gary Cannon in afternoon, me at night, Tom Armshaw's son in o/n. News people included Krasula, Ralph Shaw, and Carol Kline. Wish I could remember more.

Dr. News don't feel too sorry for yourself. There are actually a number of good news radio outets in the area and I'll bet Curtis will do great things with WSJS. You should contact them.

As long as Hamilton is GM at SJS, don't look for much to change at SJS. Word is he will stay.
