Former WKZL (70's) announcer... who?

As someone who grow up in the Triad, reading this Board is almost like attending a class reunion. This is a great thread guys as I recognize so many of you, even as an outsider who just really enjoys radio and the industry. You guys need to start a new thread and discuss the old times (70s, 80s, 90s) of Triad radio. Many folks would jump all over it.

I have already submitted applications to WSJS for the news director's job after Bob Costner left...also submitted application for the news director's gig at WPTF after that job was posted when current N-D Ray Steele announced he was leaving (last I heard, he was still there). No response from either front!

I guess that I've pissed-off too many people along the way! But, that's okay! I'm tired of dealing with people, who you have to treat with kids' gloves! Not too many of them actually know the right end of a microphone to use! I just got tired of all the damn change in the business.

In my opinion, radio is going downhill! Owners and management are doing a piss-poor job at stopping the landslide! For me, I've had enough! My wife has been pushing me to get out of the business for years because, as she puts it, they don't know their ass from a turntable!

So, I have turned to trucking. I had four uncles, who were drivers. Now, I have four, first cousins and three, second cousins, who are driving. The business is in both sides of my family. It may be long hours ...but, you do get paid well, you get great benefits, you are appreciated and there is growth in the industry. These four things I have just listed cannot be said of radio today!

Those of us, who have been around radio and television for more years than we can count on our hands and toes are now pretty much left by the roadside! To hell with that! That's why I'm putting away the pity towel and jumping into a path with a future. For those of you reading this thread--I suggest taking a look at your own future! Do you want to spend the rest of your lives in hopes of having a job next week, next month or next year? That's the wrong way to live! If radio doesn't want us---then why the hell should we want it!

When I was in my first semester of college everyone listened to either Z-93 or KZL. And "My Sharona" was the big hit.

As for me, I liked WGLD. One guy listened to that to study, even though he usually liked his music loud.

One of the selling points for WMAG against WGLD back in those days was "It's background music. You can balance your checkbook to it." Meaning no one would ever hear your commercial.

This is what I don't get, Ralph. You bitch about how radio is and yet you are trying to get back in it. Trucking is much better and you can get XM and re-live the good old days every Friday by turning to the 60's on 6. It's hilarious that you would apply to WSJS and WPTF, knowing how you burned your bridge with CMG years ago. You know, just like you burned your bridge with Dick Broadcasting. Just like you burned your bridge at Channel 2. Just like you burned your bridge with "ligh-a-fart" broadcasting in Roxboro. Need I go on?

On behalf of this awful, dying industry, we don't need you to come save us. No one cares about the old lady who hit a tree in Surry County at 2 o'clock in the morning. Thanks for the help, but no thanks.

But, hey, you'll always have those Roy Hardy Awards. The NC equivalent of the Buckeye NewsHawk Award. You can keep those plaques right up in the cab with you.

Burned bridges--probably!
Trying to get back in the business--did try, not any more!
Proud of my work in the business--damn right!
Tired of pencil-neck geeks, who are also pissed-off at the world and love slinging "crap"--sure am!
Enough breath wasted!

Just a couple more things in closing out my career...

My wife said--be truthful--so, here it is!

I applied to all those places recently to satisfy the requirements for my unemployment benefits...knowing that I had a snowball's chance in hell for any callbacks.

Yes, I have burned bridges...but on the other hand, I don't know anyone, who has not!

To those folks I have offended or burnt bridges with, I'm sorry! Please except my heartfelt regrets and apology!

To those folks, who I have worked with and for, who are good people,
thanks...I enjoyed it!

To those others--radio jocks and news people; sales folks; programmers; promotion types; managers; and, owners...who remain nameless on these threads--standing behind screen names...

I am not nameless--I am a proud, past broadcaster!

I ain't hatin' on u man. I been unemployed too. But, it occurs to me that you are admitting here (on this board) that you are getting money from driving while getting unemployment benefits and that's ILLEGAL!

not too swooft

You need to get your facts straight dittohead 1!

I SAID that I am going into the trucking industry. I'm currently in truck driver school--paying for the tuition out of my OWN pocket--no loans, government benefits, etc., which is a big cost!

As for working for money while receiving unemployment benefits, I KNOW that is illegal, Dude. My benefits have run out! And, I'm still unemployed! Do you really know what that means--especially during the holidays? I pray you never have to face that situation!

Wishing all a very Merry Christmas...and...a much better, and happier New Year!

Goodbye Ralph. Really. Goodbye. There's plenty of good local news still on the radio in North Carolina. WBT, WSJS, 101.1, WPTF and others do a pretty darn good job. Sorry they are not up to your "old timer" standards but something tells me you'd work at any of them in a heartbeat if you got a callback. Please just bow out...your anger at the radio industry is irritating. There has to be a good trucker blog out there somewhere.

Good Lord! Have some empathy! This IS a brutal business, especially for on-air folks. The man has been out of work and that's hard. Good luck on your new gig Dr.News. I for one give you kudos for having the gonads to switch careers. That's not easy either and your bitterness is understandable. I don't know what you did to burn bridges, but my thoughts are "if you don't piss somebody off, you're not really out there". I'll take an outspoken opinionated person over a butt-kisser any day! Good luck and God speed!...oops, but not in the truck, Ok?

I thought that was a new Country Western Song!

It was WMFR-FM back then. I never knew about it until I happened to read they were getting a 100,000-watt signal and changing letters to WMAG.

Dave,

Are you coming up north for the WREV reunion this month?

Later....
