Fort Walton Beach Numbers

Well, it looks like Fly 92.1 took off well, as expected. GOOD JOB! But I'm suprised it didn't take a bigger bite out of Z96, esp how they are pretty conservative during the day. But all I've seen are 12+. AND, what happened to MIX 103.1?? They had a nice jump last book, but where did the listeners go this time? Any comments??

WILN, WPFM and WYYX out of Panama City usually make a showing in the Fort Walton Beach book but are nowhere to be found this book. WPAP and WFSY from Panama City showed up with their usual numbers.
Edited by interloper on 08/03/05 11:23 PM.

Really the only station of the first 3 with a big enough stick to show up is WPFM. If I recall it has been awhile since WILN or WYYX showed up. Plus with addition if another top 40 type station I think it would be a long shot for WPFM or WILN

Those fringe signals really only show up when diaries fall to the
East of Destin. They all come in about the same to Sandestin.

Although, I think the fact that WPFM is obviously a disaster,
as is Island (to a degree) may make some difference.

WPAP showing up is rare. Sunny shows up on and off.

Same thing happens with the books when they fall heavier
in the west from Pensacola stations showing up.

Why is WTKE still Sports talk? Most AM Sports talk stations
have better ratings without a 98kw stick.

Oh yeah, I don't seem to see any numbers coming in from
The damn Gator in J-ville? Anyone know why>>>???
Edited by tibbs on 08/04/05 04:15 AM.

Actually, no books fall east of Destin at all. Okaloosa County is the ONLY county in the Ft Walton Beach metro. Walton County SHOULD be included but is not.

WTKE will stay sports talk until it becomes the new Country 98.1 when Cumulus takes it over. With the planned frequency swap planned between Star Broadcasting and Cumulus Coast 100.3 will also become Coast 93.3, while Sportradio 98.1 The Ticket moves to 100.3 and from what we hear, Star is bringing the K-Rock format back from the grave and putting it on 105.5.

I'm not a sports fan but those around my building who are sports fan don't like the programming on 98.1 and listen to the AM sports stations more (1120 and 1430 I think).
______________

We did take off very well. We were very pleased with Fly. We went on the air only TWO WEEKS before the book began. So the ratings reflect our actual first 90 days on the air. Overall Fly was #4 12+ and #1 18-24 (tied with Z96). (The gloat section) Afternoons on Fly were #2 12+, #2 18-24, #3 18-34.

(I'm hoping the rules allow me to list rank like that. I recall us not being allowed to put actual shares down).

Two things made us scratch our heads:
- Even with our huge entrance into the market, Z96 managed to still go UP.
- WBLX out of Mobile has some unusually large numbers now in the younger demos only. This MUST be from diary confusion. We think those listening to us on 92.1 may just be writing 92 with BLX getting some credit for that (they are on 92.9 even though they are CALLED 93BLX). Everyone I know around here calls them 92.9, never 93.

I have no answer for the Mix 103.1 thing.
______________

So that means the WPGG-FM move to the coast has been approved?
______________

I believe that if they just write down 92, each station gets half the credit. A new CHR usually stirs up cume at the competitor as well. I bet Z's TSL wasn't up.
______________

Not that it really matters (105.5 doesn't reach Pensacola at all), but what is the K-Rock format?

The format on 92.1 when Qantum bought it was classic rock. Call letters were WWRK and it was called K-Rock.
______________

If The Ticket moves to 100.3, isn't that gonna freeze out a sizable chunk of their audience in Pensacola? 100.3 doesn't pick up well in Escambia (or for that matter in much of Santa Rosa) TKE's listeners may not be great in numbers, but they are loyal.

100.3 puts a useable signal into south Santa Rosa county and Pensacola. Seek and scan on a car radio will usually stop on it. Maybe that'll be good enough for a non-music station to get listeners in Pensacola.

I have to be honest, the sound quality of the product coming from 98.1 sounds like a really BAD AM on FM anyways.
And the guy selling WTKE doesnt care about Pensacola. He can barely sell any spots for it in Ft Walton Beach.
______________

So does this mean the powerpig country format and staff in Evergreen is history

Probably so. They'd be leaving the boonies for the Florida coast, and could bill in a rated market. Not a bad move if the FCC okays it.

Star Broadcasting also bought WFXX 107.7 in Georgiana, AL, didn't they? So that might be a replacement, but I'm not sure they can upgrade it to match the old 93.3 FM.

Could an approved WPGG move pave the way for a new sign on in South Alabama?
______________

Re: Fort Walton Beach Move-swap

I have to give Ron Hale serious credit for pulling this entire swap/upgrade deal off. Does he basically gets 105.5 and 100.3 for nothing after Crumulus forks up the cash? I can remember him planning this right after he bought
K-92.1 (now Fly.) Patience and persistance pays off, huh?

No...Star did not buy WFXX. The had it LMA'd for a while, with a contract to purchase. Apparently, something went wrong, and the LMA ended, as did the proposed purchase.
______________

I don't think Ron deserves any credit. Now I'll admit I've never met the man but I never heard a good word about the guy in this community.

Ron had a deal to sell 98.1 to Qantum and backed out even after the papers were mostly signed (look at the WTKE file on recnet.com, you'll see things were in the process). Lawyers are still involved.

Dont give him credit til it's all done. And even then, it was mostly through shady buisness deals from what I saw and heard.
______________

BH:

I was wondering. Thought maybe he had turned over a new leaf.
I stand corrected. I have dealt with him. He hasn't changed, I guess.
How he has pulled any of this off is amazing. But not as in impressive.
I'll leave it at that.
