Four Old-Time Stations I Miss Today

DaveBayArea said:
I don't think anyone has mentioned KFAT yet.

I remember KFAT. I was gonna mention it until I saw that you beat me to it.
I have never liked Country music, but I did listen to Dr. Demento on KFAT every week. Forget his time slot. It was somewhere in the 9 PM to 12 AM area I think and maybe just one night each week. Maybe Friday Sat, or Sun.
I turned down a job over KFAT. The would be boss played that station all day and you almost can't pay me enough to endure that music.
Didn't some country station take over KSAN 94.5?

How about KAZA 1290, a Morgan Hill station? In Spanish. I worked at a butcher shop in Morgan Hill that played KAZA a little. They advertised on it too.

Not trying to be a frequency authority here, but KSAN (on FM) was at 94.9, not 94.5. In 1980 (I believe), the Jive 95 era ended when KSAN went to a country format (a la 93 KHJ).

KSAN (94.9...rounded to "95" in those days) was a country station for most of the 80s, and into the early 90s. The station's owner was MetroMedia which ran a number of successful country stations in that era, including sister-station KNEW, and KLAC in Los Angeles

Don't be sorry, Llew, I'm not. Your reply had more info and details than my basic reply, anyway. :)

I think you misread my post DJ ... I grew up in San Jose! :D

No, I simply misinterpreted your poorly constructed sentence! ;)

Its a shame that KYA coulndt have been brought back! Seeing these 1260 catholic radio billboards all over Oakland is hardly what i wanted!!! They should have given Chris Edwards White a break and let him put KYA back on the dial! I listen to KYA s stream everyday, In fact I pay for XM and Sirius,,and prefer KYA over the Sats when Im home! After listening to KYA since 1962..its a shame 1260 is gone from the AM dial!! At least Chris Edwards White is keeping the memories alive!!! Thanks Mr White! Kenny in Concord
3 XMs since 12/04
3 Sirius Since 12/06

We can all pray that nobody listens.

Don't make me ill. For someone to pretend to be somebody else in order to fulfill a DJ fantasy is really really brain-dead. The guy should probably be committed to an asylum.

But you wouldn't like it. Top 40 today is not the kind of music you grew up with. You'd likely hate hearing today's music on a Top 40 station, even if such a format were viable today.

I don't like responding to trolls (and I don't mean Dave in this case, but the KYA pretender) ... but I can't help but think that being in Firebaugh is enough punishment. Going to an assylum on top of that may be a bit too cruel and unusual!

"They should have given Chris Edwards White a break and let him put KYA back on the dial! After listening to KYA since 1962..its a shame 1260 is gone from the AM dial!!"

There was no chance the fake Chris Edwards was ever going to put KYA "back on the dial." And if he had somehow managed to pull it off, nobody would have listened, and the station would have tanked within a couple of months.. This is as as deluded as the other radio fans who were hoping 1260 would somehow come back as a "full service station" a la KSFO. With the exception of All News and Talk, AM radio is dead. And if you believe David Eduardo, the days of high-rated AM for talk and news are numbered.

Religious broadcasters can afford to buy up frequencies like 1260 because they have relatively deep pockets and don't need to make a profit. They are interested in spreading the gospel, and AM will work for that ..you don't need Hi-Fi stereo.

This works for awhile and then even the Jesuscasters evaluate their holdings and cut out the dead wood. Case in point was Far East Broadcasting's shortwave KGEI in Redwood City. After 33 years of ownership KGEI got to the point where it was more expensive to run than what it could take in from donations. They shut the station down (nobody would buy it) and sold off the transmitters, antennas, and property.

Me being a huge fan of KYA1260..Im going to say that Chris Edwards White has brought back more to the bay Area than KFRC!!!!!!! If you could have the KYA 1260 stream in my car ,I could cancel a couple Sats! In support of the 1968 Chris Edwards,, yea he made KYA what it is today,,, And Chris Edwards White,,,has exactly what i like in radio! Hes got all the old priceless KYA Jingles,, including the KYA jingle you hear on the KYA web page! The one ive heard a million times! Personnally at 55 years old, Im hoping Chris Edwards White does get to do Terrestrial radio! A KYA format is much more enjoyable than 106.9!! KYA and Chris Edwards White are like Cousin Brucie on Sirius,,,plays everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It would be neat if KYA could get a gig on Sirius or XM... somewhere on the satelite dial! It would be great to have KYA in the car!

You think free over the air radio has competition today? Just wait until 2010 when all the spectrum freed up by the 2009 tv digital conversion starts being used! The choices for music programing is going to be amazing!
Just look up and read the exhibits submitted to the fcc in the satellite merger files at www.fcc.gov

Oh, Kenny, please stop. I mean, when you get to the point of comparing a Radio Hall of Famer like Cousin Brucie with this [DELETED BY AUTHOR TO SAVE MODERATOR TIME AND ENERGY] in Clovis, I have to start questioning your thought process.

I yearn for KIBE -- NOT!!! :D

KYA

KSFO

KKHI - We never really finished this debate at the other place, but I KNOW they played classical music overnight as of spring 1973. It was sponsored by one of the breweries (Falstaff?).

And yes, KABL. They had "Symphony Hall" at 8 pm back in the day. As a kid I liked their harp sounders and the "ping" between news stories. Their music had a schmaltzy, kitschy appeal which evokes some nostalgia in me today.

My parents largely set the listening agenda in those days and they liked KSFO and KABL.

I yearn for KNBA 1190 - NOT! ;D

Well...maybe for some unintentional humor, if you 'member
when the Vallejo station was owned by Lou Ripa...

KNBA
The reason for the call letters is it was once owned by former the NBA franchise San Francisco Warriors' owner, Franklin Meuli.

What I find most fascinating about the KYA trolls, er, apologists is that, even in the day before FM ruled the world, KYA wasn't even the first choice for rock 'n' rollers, it was KFRC! That's why I think we see more passion when they departed the AM dial, or the call letters came back. Seems to me that KYA always had a heck of a time trying to decide what it was. Another reason I'm crying no tears over KYA ... even though the hill behind the 'Stick will always be "KYA Hill" to me.

(What can I say ... long-time lurker, newbie poster)

KYA did have some memorable jocks like Gene Nelson, Johnny Holiday, Russ the Moose, Tommy Saunders, but even before KFRC cleaned their clock, KEWB, with that crap signal in Oakland was beating their butts.

Tripton: I looked back through the small pile of info I have about KNBA, and I don't see where Franklin ever owned the station, even as a limited partner.

In July 1958, when the station was known as KGYW, it was bought by Mary Elizabeth Gunberg, who changed it to KNBA ("Kovers North Bay Area"). Around the same time, Franklin Mieuli was working on getting his KPUP (106.9 FM, later known as KHIP) on the air in San Francisco.

He didn't purchase the Warriors until 1962, four years after KGYW became KNBA.

Of course, as the great djj and so many others here can attest, KNBA rose to its zenith under the ownership of the one and only Lou Ripa, who paid all of $70,000 to buy the station in June 1961. Lou died in February 1992 at the age of 81. In testament to how much KNBA's value had appreciated in the three decades that he owned it, Lou's estate received $50,000 for the station.
