Four Old-Time Stations I Miss Today

Boss,

I will not challenge. You are very likely correct.
I feel really stupid that I have carried that incorrect piece of trivia for all these years.

KNBA
The reason for the call letters is it was once owned by former the NBA franchise San Francisco Warriors' owner, Franklin Meuli.

I understand that NBA stood simply for "North Bay Area". When was Franklin Mieuli supposed to have owned KNBA?

As a warning to everyone, I received an email overnight from the person who operates the KYA tribute station in Clovis. His thinly veiled threat was that he needed to talk with my wife, whom he refered to by her real name several times, saying that he is "planning to visit with" her. It has already been forwarded on to our attorney, who has advised me to contact the police.

He also says that "I have bought into an FM in the North Bay" and refers to James Gabbert as "an old friend."

Since you're lurking here, I'll mention that I know James Gabbert. You are not his "old friend" in any manner or means.

Doubtful Mieuli ever did own 1190...the station was KGYW 1190 under
California-Nevada Broadcasters Inc before Lou Ripa became owner
in 1962, lasting until his death in February 1992...

Yes, KNBA stood for "Kovers North Bay Area,", according to his 1980s
sales literature (coverage maps, etc.)...the call letters are now on a
non-commercial station in Alaska...

D Jackson says:
"In testament to how much KNBA's value had appreciated in the three decades that he owned it, Lou's estate received $50,000 for the station."

Lou was 81 when he died; his estate included his older brother, Samuel,
in Holyoke, Mass....

BossRadioDJ,,,I appreciate your kind words on my thought process,,,all i was saying is that KYA,and Chris Edwards White plays everything, like Cousin brucie plays, people request it, he plays it! The Cuz ,, has no limits, if you request Ode to Billie joe he plays it! At KYA you get your song played,,, if KFRC was playing oldies,,they would never play Reach Out of the Darkness by friend and Lover,,,,from 1968! All I was saying is you hear your request from these 2 guys! Face it, in this place called the "Bay Area" theres nothing on our Terrestrial Dial where you can hear Elvis or a song from 1962,,So Internet radio and the Sats are it! Born in oakland, raised in Concord ,, Chris Edwards White brought back something I thought i would never hear again! In 1994 (April) KFRC bought KYAfm and that was the end of it! I wonder if someone will do the same for KFRC am???And one other thing, i pay for XM and Sirius,, KYA is free,,, If James Gabbert ever got back into radio,,,I think he would put a "Big Dent" in KFRCs ratings! Maybe James Gabbert could do something similar to what Chris Edwards White has done for KYA!!!!

According to the FCC filing (October 1993), the total price paid by North Bay Broadcasters for KNBA in the probate sale was $50,000.

I think Mieuli was heavily involved on the ad side of the business, and also produced Giants and Niners games in the 50s and 60s. I know he also had radio rights to the Squaw Valley Olympics and Lon Simmons tells stories about broadcasting the first "Miracle on Ice" win over the Soviets in 1960 on a promotional CD KNBR put out a few years ago. I know DJ has this all over at the HOF site, but I'll gladly let him have the glory.

How about KAZA 1290, a Morgan Hill station? In Spanish. I worked at a butcher shop in Morgan Hill that played KAZA a little. They advertised on it too.

Interesting station - out at the end of Cochrane Rd. My dad and I would visit the station somewhat regularly around 1988 (we lived nearby). I was around 10 at the time and very interested in radio. Well, the station itself wasn't well taken care of - basic old concrete building with junk all over the place. The DJ's were cool and would invite us in to listen to the live broadcast in the main studio or listen to the taping of a future show. Now, if only we visited South King Road in SJ before 1988...

The old KLOK building? Gosh, wouldn't that make a swell site for a broadcasting museum? I wonder who owns it, and if they'd lease it to us for $1 a month...

That's right! A true gem of radio history in San Jose. What I wouldn't give to see the inside of that building. John Higdon mentioned sometime back of getting pics of the inside - although didn't seem too pleased at how it held up.
