FOX 1410 - Lafayette "L-Town Hour"

1316WWWOOD..Right your not bitter. You were a real radio wiz kid back in the day, but the suits sold your job out. Now you just sit around reading and posting on the radio board. Hoping for the next broadcaster to be a failure to prove your point, realistically they can't succeed...because you did not. Radio is more than card readers and button pushers.. Radio is the voice of the people in it's community.

First off, if 1410 is the "voice of the people", the people are in bad shape.

Please. What is your deal? Mopes like you are what is wrong with life in general. I was stating an opinion, or in this case I believe a fact, and you want to get in some pissing contest over a little local radio station. Get over it. Sounds like you are the one on some flashback to the past and bitter. Life is too short to debate matters as trivial as this with people like you.

It's too bad that forums turn into places where an opinion can't be given without some hump going crazy because you differ with his or hers small mind.

You got it all wrong dwiener. You think one post gives you the authority to judge, and, reveal by whatever method, why a person is out of the business and why someone might post an opinion on a website.

You need to get out more.

See ya.

Sorry dude if a raw nerve was hit, but put on your big girl/boy pants on. Really who cares? Opinions are not trivial when you state them as fact. A lie now is believed to be the truth.....does it now become the truth? Twisted words and shaded opinions are how radio careers are destroyed. This forum was created to share knowledge and to support the passion for radio broadcasting. Radio is the voice of the people in it's community!! Bless the folks at 1410 and best of luck.

I think a lot of people are hoping for long-term success to come out of WSHY.

I've resided in the Lafayette area for over a decade, and since the demise of WASK's news/talk format in 1997, no one has really stepped up to the plate to give the format a decent shot. Kudos to Jeff for bringing the format back to Lafayette.

That being said, some of the negative comments about the station are valid and here's why. WSHY is a commercial operation in a rated market on a station that has been in simulcast mode for a number of years prior to the LMA. Simply flipping the switch and launching a confusing billboard campaign with three different logos isn't going to drive an extremely stubborn listening audience away from WLS, WGN, or even K105 and WASK. It dilutes the mission of the campaign because the branding isn't established and it confuses the potential listener. Also, the local talk program should be put under the microscope as well. There are a lot of good things that come out of the program, but a lot of things that also turn listeners--and perhaps advertisers--away.

Now should be the time for them to determine from a programming, marketing, and advertising standpoint what can be done to turn people off the stations they went to for news, talk and information for years and on to WSHY. Getting to that point is what's going to both be tricky and make or break them.

I'm not trying to be negative here--just objective. I do wish Jeff and the crew the best of luck, and I hope they can one day be liked by most, if not all the readers on this board.

I think the most detrimental thing for them is gettinga decent sales staff in place. Right now, it's just Jeff and some other guy and I have NO idea of how Jeff can manage AND sell especially for a station that just launched and listeners are still getting used to. I don't know about the billboard campaign but I'm sure the confusing logos had something to do with them just finding out what their logo was. I'm sure changes were developing there and I'm sure, like everything it was due to money. Again they need a decent sales staff. If Jeff would hire more people I bet they could get things turing around and would solve a lot of problems. I read and hear how they have 3-4 people running everything and that just isn't enough. That alone might kill them. He needs to take the plunge and hire dedicated sales people and then people for other specified roles (traffic, business mgmt., maybe a sales mgr.). That would allow them to focus more on their quality. Right now with Purdue baseball coming in and out and they still go off air now and them they have more important issues to face and money might be a factor in that as well. Seems everytime I turn on the radio there's another Purdue baseball game on there instead of regular programming. That's got to be hurting them. I'm sure that's an AMP thing. I can't see Jeff asking for Purdue baseball to be a part of his programming. I know a lot of former WLS listeners that have switched to WSHY though. the only time they switch back is when baseball comes on the station. For them to truly succeed though, Jeff has to stop trying to save money and doing everything himself and get some help down there. He's got some (3?) peoplenow, but he needs to get real help. Unfortunelately for him that means spending more money and just taking the plunge. He's got a good product and the community would be worse off if he lost it. Lafayette needs talk radio again and this time for it to stay. I still talk to a lot of business owners around Lafayette and they admit there's not a better time (because of all the stuff going on in the country, Obama, taxes, bailouts) to advertise on a station like WSHY but nobody's been to their door. Can't reach everyone in town by yourself. Hire sales people!!!! (Not me though, I hate sales. LOL)

I'm sure money IS an issue with them. You have to keep in mind that unlike other stations not only are they still introducing themselves to possible advertisers and grow their accounts they also have that huge payment I'm sure every month or half year, quarterly or whatever they have to pay out to AMP over their heads thanks to it being an LMA. I'm sure that would ruin just about any station, not just them. They've got to be in a situation where as soon as the money comes in it goes right back out!

Rowdy hit the nail on the head as usual.

To do anything, IT TAKES MONEY: improve your signal, get new equipment, hire good on-air people, have a fulltime sales staff, advertise so people know your station exists, and the list goes on...

Check back in a year or two and see if WSHY has become a force in Tippecanoe County and hope they can get a few Arbitron diaries filled out by some faithful conservatives!

Good luck to Jeff and his staff!!

So what's up with 1410, does anyone know? I think everone wants to see these guys succeed but they are off the air more than on. I think they have been off since last week and are still off today. They at least have to be predictable as to when they are going to be on and with what programming. With this performance, they won't/don't have a chance. Good luck to them though.

WSHY's web site (http://www.wshy1410.com) now reads only "This account has been suspended." Have they gone dark permanently?

I heard they were reorganizing, but it seems rather odd they'd sign-off temporarily and let their website go away.

As late as last week, I heard a member of their sales staff was out conducting business as usual and didn't mention being off the air to a prospective client (a friend of mine).

Are they moving out of their downtown studios and planning a relaunch? Such a move with a small staff and a strapped budget may justify why they've been off for so long.

Artistic has taken the station back. Only lord knows what they will do with it.

If I'm not mistaken, when our group was hired to do a research study in the market, we said that a Spanish Language AM station would be the best void to fill. This was done at the same time we discovered a hole for Adult Hits. Artistic bought the data and flipped 95.3 to Bob FM.

WSHY was a good station that was actually filling a void! Now Artistic has it back in their hands...who knows whats going to happen.

No longer need to wonder what Artistic is going to do with 1410, it's all back to Bob FM.

Gee, who saw that one coming?

Maybe it'll give them an opportunity to fix their legal ID over on 95.3. Its been very incorrect for the last 8 months as WBPE is licensed to Brookston, not Lafayette.

They do have some seriously large investors looking at them to bring them back. Just a matter of whether they feel the investment is worth it or not. I know if they do relaunch they will be buying better equipment and bringing on much more talented and professional staff. They were having as many problems with disgruntled staff as much as they were with being off the air and all the technical problems. That and the owners they had weren't realistic about the radio business and at the end it was turning into a giant bitch-fest from what I hear. From what I know, the only people they would have coming back are Tom Kubat, Bob Ford, Jeff Holmes, and another 'mystery' person I could't get the name of. And it would be under a completely different company than they had before. Makes sense. I think it would be better to start from scratch than dive into a the company that had it before and take on their debt.
