Fox Banking On "Idol" To Bring Some Life To Its Myspace Website

This season, "American Idol" is allowing potential contestants the chance to audition for the singing competition series without leaving their house. They can now submit videos of themselves singing one of ninety pre-approved songs via Myspace.

Fox, which airs "American Idol," purchased Myspace at the height of its popularity, and has since seen it yield to Facebook as the number one social networking website. To me, this is just Fox's way of putting lipstick on a pig. Why not break out this gimmick earlier, when the show was more popular?

Sounds like they are trying to recoup some of their money. Idol gets worse with
each passing season. The latest version sounds like a true circus. What's up next?
Replacing Seacrest with Rosie O'Donnell?

If Idol exists beyond this season.

X Factor debuts next fall, my guess is Idol is gone within a year or 2, based on ratings (and I'm thinking this year might be the worst now with the judge changes)

Could be worse. She could be a judge!
Or a contestant who makes it to the final rounds based on fan voting!

I can't see American Idol lasting beyond 2012. Our overnight ratings during the last season were noticeably lower. People are tired of it.

I remember using Myspace for about five minutes, but becoming instantly frustrated because people were putting dozens of huge .jpg files on their front pages without regard to composition or the time it would take to load.

i put up a myspace page. Only had one friend. The same guy that talked me into putting it up. fooled around with it for about a week and quit. Haven't been back since. I agree about the messy web pages. People would put too many pictures, wallpaper and flash animation. it would take forever to load, music would start playing automatically and further slow everything down and locking up the computer. Too much junk. I absolutely HATE flash. There ought to be a law against sticking that crap over every website. if I have to wait for more than 30 seconds for a page to load, I'm gone. And I have broadband. I used to have dial up when they first started polluting the internet with it and it was a complete nightmare surfing around. I'm also not a big fan of cheesy power point and massive PDF files that bring everything to a screeching halt when you accidently click one. They need to warn you before you click. But thats another rant for another day.

I remember back in '06-'07 when youngsters see a computer and just go on Myspace. Now's not the case anymore as many have switched to Facebook.

IMO, Myspace just needs to shut down already. You can tell a website is dying when you are able to sync your Facebook account to Myspace. Also, the pages take so long that my computer even starts freezing. At least it's not the case with Facebook or even Twitter (even though you can't really decorate your profile on Twitter).

Personally, I stick with youtube. Not for those awful "Fred" videos, but mainly for parodies and other old tv-related clips. I tried these social networking sites before and it seems more trouble than its worth.

Five years ago it was Myspace, now it's Facebook and Twitter that's so popular. Who knows what in 2015 will it be next? By then, everybody who's on Facebook and Twitter will be burnout of those sites as they are today with Myspace.

It will take more than Idol to fix MySpace.

First of all...to much clutter. Takes to long to load. Too many people with their own agendas co-opting your page. And it just feels so damned old. I set up a MySpace a few years ago, but Facebook is just way more direct and simple. For what I do, Facebook is the way to go. Twitter is simpler, but uploading pics and video are easier on Facebook than most WordPress sites.

I read a lot of complaining about corporate radio. But to see what NewsCorp did to MySpace is far worse than what CC or Cumulus has done to radio. And when Pandora gets sold, you can bet it will get trashed just as MySpace was. And mark my words: Pandora will get sold for billions, and it will become loaded with ads and all the other crap everyone hates, and it's fifteen minutes will be over.
