This season, "American Idol" is allowing potential contestants the chance to audition for the singing competition series without leaving their house. They can now submit videos of themselves singing one of ninety pre-approved songs via Myspace.

Fox, which airs "American Idol," purchased Myspace at the height of its popularity, and has since seen it yield to Facebook as the number one social networking website. To me, this is just Fox's way of putting lipstick on a pig. Why not break out this gimmick earlier, when the show was more popular?
