Fox Burning Through Last Man Standing Intentionally?

Yes, another point I was about to make. ABC did LMS no favors by placing it on 'dead' Friday evenings. That seems to me like shooting yourself in the foot. Home Improvement, IIRC, was a Tuesday night product and hit enormous numbers. Why wouldn't ABC try the same with LMS? Seems like deliberate sabotage.

Home Improvement aired when Tim Allen was at the top of his game. He still had his standup that the show was based on. Is LMS based on anything?

Not that I can figure out. There is nothing on LMS that resembles the cable show that Tim and Al had on Home Improvement.

LMS has Tim as part owner and "marketing executive" for a chain of outdoor super stores. A number of prior episodes had the store figure prominently in the stories but not so currently. Scenes are filmed inside the store but it doesn't figure into the story line very much. They used to bring in guest stars (Tony Hawk - skateboards, Reba McEntire - mountain climbing and those hillbilly yokels who hunt and fish) but we haven't seen any of these lately either. They seem to have added semi-permanent star Jay Leno as the 'mechanic' who runs the service business.

Is there any part of Tim's stand up routine that the show revolved around? HI was based on him.

I am not familiar with Tim Allen's stand up comedy routines but a common thread in both HI and LMS is his love of cars so that might be a candidate.

it was the highest rated show on a night with low viewership

Ratings only tell part of the story. How much did it cost to make? Were they able to sell advertising that was able to cover the costs of airing, promoting, and running the show? Was Fox asking for an increase (IIRC reading the trades, this was indeed the case). Was Fox perhaps asking for a large increase on another ABC Show (Modern Family) that pushed ABC over budget for third-party programming (VS shows produced by studios owned by Disney?)

Contrary to beliefs by people, it's not some giant conspiracy, it's business. Fox clearly saw that they could make money with it, and since they owned the studio, they probably paid less for it. Perhaps they also had the money in the budget to air it, or saw an opportunity to make money in syndication with more episodes (something ABC at the time would not have benefited from, although ironically now they will).

On "Home Improvement" the car restoration was a much bigger part of the show.

The latest episode of LMS have Mike, Chuck and Jay Leno's character getting together in a hobby/business rebuilding classic cars. Not sure if that is a new show tangent or just a whiff.

That's a first for this show, but Leno's love of restoring classic cars is well known.

Not exactly a "first". Since the beginning of LMS 'Mike' has had his classic green F100 pickup truck and it played prominently in a few episodes (such as when he was teaching Eve to drive and his encounters with the cop handing out "rolling stop" tickets). In fact, the only episode when he doesn't drive his pickup is the one where he and Boyd almost drive into a sink hole.

That's right. There were a few episodes where he worked on that pickup. I meant restoring cars wasn't as prominent as in the other show.

I predict LMS is a "One and Done" on Fox. The cast changes have taken a lot of life out of what was a great ensemble and the writers seem to be stuck for new ideas.

It’s in season two with decent enough prospects to make season 3 a reasonable discussion.

It’s already not one-and-done, and perhaps even less so.
