Just for the record, DirecTV doesn't yet provide any HD locals in the Bakersfield, CA market--in fact, no broadcast TV stations, including all the major network affiliates in Bakersfield, yet air any programming in HD. It is known that some DirecTV subscribers pull in HD network programming via out-of-market feeds from the neighboring Los Angeles market or east coast feeds from New York. The majority of Bakersfield viewers get "local" HD from the local cable provider (Bright House Networks). This is accomplished by the local network affiliates providing a direct closed-circuit HD feed from their control rooms to the cable company. The local affiliates there have no HD broadcast facilities nor HD production ability. They simply pass through their master HD network feeds to the cable company, and switch back to SD anytime local programming such as local newscasts are scheduled to air. This particular method works well--at least for those who can afford, and have access to cable. Otherwise there is no over-the-air free HD programming available to that market.

To my surprise; KBAK off air walked circles around KCBS off DISH; the differents was like VHS in the EP mode and Betacam SP or a good DVD dub, with KBAK looking like Betacam and KCBS looking like VHS in th EP mode. Sound quality was like AM vs CD; I had no ideal how bad the picture had gotten on Dish Network since I dropped it in 2000.
The test location was in the Antelope Valley, so Bakersfield area residents would be wise to stick with off air reception of Bakersfield digital television instead of Dish Network.
If I had Bright House, I would never jump over to Dish; from the DVR to a better selection of premium channels, I sure miss my Bright House.

My test was done with a Dish SD DVR, and a decent converter. KBAK is only in SD anyway; I only hope we don't have to wait as long for KBAK to convert to HD as we did for them to broadcast in stereo. KBAK analog; still does not broadcast in stereo, and will leave the air without ever broadcasting in stereo. KBAK is having a hard enough time keeping its DT up and running; down for a week at a time with technical problems. I was told by an insider it was problems with their microwave link.does your HD DVR have a HDMI output
