FOX & CBS affiliates in Bakersfield no longer on DISH Network

This is not the first time DISH had problems with broadcasters,For years KMPH 26 and KFRE 59 were not on Dish do to contract issues with Pappas. They did resolve it a few years back.DISH is only hurting themselves, not only that DISH has no target date when HD locals will be available for Fresno and Bakersfield,DIRECT already has them.

Hey, I can relate--in the Quad Cities, we lost WHBF-TV as soon as August came around, and we didn't get it back 'til Labor Day week! And earlier this month, KWQC-TV was taken off DISH Network, but it eventually returned late last weekend....

Just for the record, DirecTV doesn't yet provide any HD locals in the Bakersfield, CA market--in fact, no broadcast TV stations, including all the major network affiliates in Bakersfield, yet air any programming in HD. It is known that some DirecTV subscribers pull in HD network programming via out-of-market feeds from the neighboring Los Angeles market or east coast feeds from New York. The majority of Bakersfield viewers get "local" HD from the local cable provider (Bright House Networks). This is accomplished by the local network affiliates providing a direct closed-circuit HD feed from their control rooms to the cable company. The local affiliates there have no HD broadcast facilities nor HD production ability. They simply pass through their master HD network feeds to the cable company, and switch back to SD anytime local programming such as local newscasts are scheduled to air. This particular method works well--at least for those who can afford, and have access to cable. Otherwise there is no over-the-air free HD programming available to that market.

When KGET,KBAK,KERO, and KBFX run the network feed it is HD over the air.The only station in the valley that has an HD newscast and syndicated programming in HD is KFSN ABC 30.

Dish Network which did have the NY and LA markets before they got a court injunction in 2006 was isomewhat in HD, but they were in SD. Dish now relies on All American Direct which provides their Markets from Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth and San Francisco. Unfortunately, those channels (With the exception of WXIA Atlanta and KXAS in Dallas/Fort Worth) are not in HD.

I just had Dish installed on the 12th of December, and had a choice between Bakersfield & L.A., since I already get KBAK DT off air, I went with L.A. The other night I decided to do an A-B comparison between KCBS off Dish and KBAK off air; the difference in picture and sound quality stuck out like a sore thumb. The Dish goes through the S-VHS and the converter goes through the composite, so by default Dish had the upper hand. To my surprise; KBAK off air walked circles around KCBS off DISH; the differents was like VHS in the EP mode and Betacam SP or a good DVD dub, with KBAK looking like Betacam and KCBS looking like VHS in th EP mode. Sound quality was like AM vs CD; I had no ideal how bad the picture had gotten on Dish Network since I dropped it in 2000.

The test location was in the Antelope Valley, so Bakersfield area residents would be wise to stick with off air reception of Bakersfield digital television instead of Dish Network.

If I had Bright House, I would never jump over to Dish; from the DVR to a better selection of premium channels, I sure miss my Bright House.

Hey XRQKFM does your HD DVR have a HDMI output, It has a much better picture and sound quality than using the composite or the conponent output. I do not have dish, I have Comcast in Fresno, and on those outputs there is a big difference.A friend of mine has DIRECTV and there HDMI output is also as good as the over the air signal.

My test was done with a Dish SD DVR, and a decent converter. KBAK is only in SD anyway; I only hope we don't have to wait as long for KBAK to convert to HD as we did for them to broadcast in stereo. KBAK analog; still does not broadcast in stereo, and will leave the air without ever broadcasting in stereo. KBAK is having a hard enough time keeping its DT up and running; down for a week at a time with technical problems. I was told by an insider it was problems with their microwave link.

Dish vs OTA.
Can you say "Compression"?

I was going to say - no surprise to me. Our Analog off-air signal beats both Dish and DirecTV for picture quality. Pay attention to the blades of grass during the playoff games this weekend.

Can we say "Mega Compression"?
We just had a so called expert on the subject from our local newspaper suggest you get a better picture off Dish or cable than antenna. Can we say commission?
