FOX/Disney deal

There is a difference between "closing in on a deal" and "closing".

Closing in means that the parties are near an agreement on price and terms. If that happens, then all the appropriate regulatory bodies, lenders and even shareholders have to approve. That could take many months.

"Closing" means all the regulations and conditions are met, and a payment will be made to the seller and the buyer "gets the keys".

"Closing in" is the first preliminary step. "Closing" is the final end step.

Please do not incessantly post things that have already been posted and which are being discussed.

What this sale would mean is Disney would be part owner of these shows, as far as their catalogue.

I believe Disney would own 20th Television and 20th TV Animation, which are part owners of those shows.

But Fox Network isn't part of this deal, and Fox has the contract for current shows.

Disney would own the whole 20th Century Fox Catalog, movies, TV shows, and production studios. As well as all regional sports networks. Assuming it gets DOJ approval.

now the impact of this, well, this splits Fox and this is a repeat of the 2006 Viacom/CBS Split, Disney gets the Old Fox while the Murdochs get the new Fox. and as for the FSN RSNs, i can see a rebrand to ESPN Local with the Longhorn Network (which Disney/ESPN co-owns with The University of Texas) be merged into the FSN Soutwest RSN divsion and have the headquarters be based out of Austin. and as for the X-Men, Deadpool and Fantastic Four, they too can finally get involved in the much bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe films and TV shows. as for FX Networks, if Disney is interested in getting WWE's TV rights in 2019, then FX could be the new home Raw and SmackDown in 2019 if Disney/old Fox outbids NBCUniversal and Facebook and CBS for the rights of WWE TV. plus now Disney gets full sole ownership of the entire Star Wars franchise.
 
Be weird seeing ESPN Detroit I hope they keep it Fox Sports Detroit but they will put the ESPN brand with the city maybe local sportscenter with pro teams highlights & news maybe a local first take as well.
 
The channels won't be Fox Sports anything. They are concentrating on national channels, and getting out of the regional game going foward. So in 2018, look for ESPN (insert city here), and Sports Center (insert city here). More College Football and Basketball as teams and conferences who could only be seen online via ESPN3 before, now upgrade to cable RSNs. The NCAA Women's Tournament will certainly have more regional coverage next year across the channels. All this of course alongside the existing Pro Teams coverage. So, more live content, less hours of World Poker!

They're buying it to populate their own Disney online platform.

Yes they're getting some local sports cable channels (most of which are not part of basic like ESPN). But the main thing is content.

Fox Sports is being split up between the two groups:
Fox Sports stays with "New Fox" along with FS1, FS2 and Big Ten Network so the Big XII TV rights is not affected by this.

and the FSN RSNs, trademarks to Speed, Fox Soccer Plus, the Fox College Sports are going to Disney as part of buying out "old Fox".

so pretty much Big XII TV rights is split between ESPN networks and ABC (and The Longhorn Network for all Texas Longhorns Games that air on that channel) and Fox Sports (not the FSN RSNs and the FCS RSNs, but Fox and FS1 & FS2). and plus the creation of the Big XII network have to require the Big XII agreeing to a new deal with ESPN or Big XII buyout the University of Texas' ownership of The Longhorn Network. so pretty much, as i said in the post that i posted about the official announcement, i have mentioned that i can see ESPN merge the Longhorn Network and FSN Southwest (the FSN RSN for Texas, which UT is based in) and move the re-branded ESPN Southwest headquarters to Austin to be with The Longhorn Network or move The Longhorn Network's headquarters to Irving where FSN Southwest is currently based out of.
 
ESPN has ESPNU already so those College Sports Channels can be rebanned into one ACC Network,one Big12 and one that has Sports Game Shows,Sports Movies,Sports Shows and so on.

However, insiders tell Variety that rumors abound on the lot speculating that profits from the sale to Disney could be used to buy a new studio."

A new studio? Really? Let the speculation begin.

BTW: 21st Century retains ownership of the Fox Studio on West Pico, although it will lease the facility to Disney for 7 years. Why would Murdoch retain ownership of this historic real estate? Money. The lot is part of what is now called Century City.
