FOX/Disney deal

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/03/hellfire-at-fox-as-sean-hannity-mulls-leaving

Now there are rumors of changes coming to the Murdoch managed Fox Corporation Specifically Fox News. Specifically the article focuses on Sean Hannity's future at Fox News plus Donna Brazille role as a Fox news Pundit and Paul Ryan joining the board at Murdoch's Fox Board.
I think Lachlan sees the writing on the wall that Fox News can't put all of it's eggs in Trump's basket. It might work short term but Trump won't be in office forever. They need to move away from the Trump humping if they want to remain a "news" outlet.

I agree. The DNC decision was a wake-up call. I sense that Lachlan isn't the ideologue his father is.

From what I've heard, "dad" (Rupert) is a typical business conservative, not a far-right Trump thumper. He just knows that the Fox News formula has worked to make it number 1, and flogging Donald was working for a long time. I've heard that behinds the scenes, Rupert loves to share Stupid Trump stories.

and younger cord cutters, liberal or conservative, have no need for cable news

Also a few years ago we talked about the issue of Trump viewers moving to Sinclair though during the time Sinclair was planning to get the Tribune stations like KTLA Los Angeles. There was talks while Fox News was in the process of getting new management Fox News had to respond on how they would gain audiences besides Trump though given that Sinclair's leaders were starting to get the national spotlight for the Tribune talks, their must runs and their management were trying to run with Roger Ailes playbook for local tv stations.

Unless Hannity's ratings take a huge hit in the next year or so, the Murdochs will do everything to re-sign him to a new deal because if they let him walk MSNBC and CNN will sang him up in a second. Fox news prime time ad rates are far ahead of CNN and MSNBC. You guys have to remember this is a business and Money is far more important than politics.

assuming Hannity doesn't become toxic to advertisers

Money matters but so, too, does being able to get the return on investment. NBC may have learned a big name (albeit not Hannity level) doesn't always adapt in a new setting.

I can't see CNN or MSNBC wanting Hannity. He is a toxin. I don't even think the higher ups at Fox News really want him.

If the extra revenue can finance a second and third island vacation home for CNN or MSNBC executives by bringing in Hannity they will be just fine by all the baggage he will bring. you dont have feel sorry for them.

Don't the networks usually keep the primetime stuff separate from the other cable channels.

There is usually a media preview for the network, but there are usually lots of events taking place as part of the upfront.

There's also a press junket on the west coast to preview the new fall season.

Combined upfronts? I wonder how much of a mess that will be.

Bound to be more than a bit awkward to talk about ABC or Freeform "family friendly" shows next to shows like What We Do In The Shadows, Mayan's MC, and "Always Sunny".

I'm sure they will handle it just fine, but it'll still be jarring. Then again, is there a place at Disney for riskier entertainment? I know they have done it in the past, I just wonder if it fits in with the content vision of Disney, since I highly doubt any FX shows will make the cut for Disney+. Do they compete with themselves and keep Hulu for the more adult fare? It'd be cool if they created a bundle (Get Hulu+ and Disney+ for $20 a month combined, etc), but I just have a feeling that FXNetworks may get "toned down" a bit. If they did, it would be a real shame, as that's the only basic cable group that competes with HBO.

I asked the Disney folks about that once, and they said that's why they come up with other brands like Touchstone. As long as it's branded "FXNetworks," shows can be as risky as they can be on cable. It's not like Disney is some religious cult. They have no problem with sex or violence, as long as Mickey & Minnie aren't the ones doing it.

Prentiss Fraser has been removed due to the Disney/20th Century Fox deal

Prentiss Fraser, who headed up the U.K.-based Fox Networks Group Content Distribution business, has left in the wake of the Disney-Fox deal.

Fraser was pink-slipped as part of the first wave of layoffs following completion of the Disney-Fox merger last month. Her departure from Fox’s London-based global TV distribution unit is the first of note in Europe as as result of the deal.

Fox and Disney both have sizable Europe-based operations, but no wholesale management changes have yet taken place in the U.K. In the U.S., a number of senior Fox executives have already been laid off. In Asia, by contrast, Disney unveiled a restructuring Monday that keeps many Fox executives in place.

Insiders on the TV side at Fox expect there to be more moves after the L.A. Screenings in May but have been told it is business as usual until then. Fraser’s exit is the only major departure thus far in the FNGCD headquarters, sources said.
