Fox now promoting DVR use

Saw a promo for "The Following" last night that had a graphic saying "Set your DVR now!"

I can't recall ever seeing a network promoting the time-shifting of a show. Either Fox has found a way to make money on L+3 and L+7 data or they think it will help C+3 data enough to make it worth promoting. Either way, it is a noteworthy change.

Fox television reminds me of that old limbo song:

"How LOW can you GO?"

It ain't a big fall when you're already at the bottom. What do they have to lose?

I wonder how frequent users of video cassette recorders (VCRs) felt about the new promotion for digital video recorders (DVRs)?

Speaking only for myself......I bought the wifey an OTA DVR because I wanted out of the VCR programming biz. It seems there is a female gene that prohibits most women from understanding how to set recording times on VCR's and I submit that is the essence of its failure. ;D

If there's a gene, it's not limited to females. Back in the '80s, I was the only person in my family who knew how to program our VCR, so my dad would always have me set it to record stuff for him.

I had learned how to program it by reading the instructions on the back of the panel that hid the controls. :)

TVLAND has been promoting DVRing for a few weeks now. Every time they have a promo for "Hot in Cleavland" it says on the screen "Set your DVR Now".

Do they still have the TV codes for programming listed. I thought it was so cool, I could just enter a code from TV guide and it would record the show.

I think promoting DVR use is a good thing. It makes it more likely you will watch the show. That way if you are not home at the time, or are watching something else, you'll still be able to watch the show you recorded. The networks should find that more valuable than the person not watching at all.

Fox, along with NBC were one of the few broadcasters which used a flag meant for TiVos which allows a press of the thumbs up button to set up the recording of a show during its promo with the flash of a graphic. I haven't seen it since last year however because it seems to be a legacy of the older TiVo systems and not the newer HD-enhanced OS they have.

I was also a bit surprised by Fox's encouragement of DVR use, but I think it's because The Following is getting a lot of buzz. It won't be episodic, but will have a continuing story line - more like a cable drama. So they want to make sure viewers watch the first show and like it enough to stick with it.

"It seems there is a female gene that prohibits most women from understanding how to set recording times on VCR's"

I was on mandatory VCR programming duty for Mum from the time I was about 8 until the Great Amerikan NTSC Killoff a few years ago effectively eliminated that position.*

When Grandmother gave Mum a VCR Plus+-equipped RCA VCR for Christmas in '95 it was a godsend, since it relieved me of that duty for the most part. Although Mum still couldn't figure out how to invoke VCR Plus+ mode, despite it being so simple ("see that little square 'P' button in the bottom-centre of the remote? Okay? Push it, then push '1', okay, then type in the number you see listed in the paper, then push this other button a couple times, okay, then you shut off the VCR and let it go.") I mean, really, how much easier could it have been?

* Dad probably could've been, but the fact that most of the time he either wasn't home to do it or he was too drunk to even know he *was* home safely ruled him out as a safe choice of candidate.

I recently met someone in her 20s who has a VCR, and actively uses it for time-shifting. I clarified that she meant VCR, and not DVR. Sure enough, there is still a market for them.

I still once in a blue moon record something onto VHS. Taped a couple of high school football games several weeks ago, plus a couple Roseannes (TV Land) and an episode of "Branded" off Me-TV (KVOS) to fill in blank space.

Until there is no longer a market for VHS tapes, anyway. They still sell audio cassettes, too, by the way.

I have an LG DVD Recorder/VCR combo from around 2008. It has a digital tuner included. It recorded Super Bowl XLVI for me just fine! :)

As for promoting DVR use...doesn't FOX own DirecTV? I know they have DVR capability.

News Corp (Fox, etc.) used to own a minority stake in DirecTV, but sold that interest to Liberty Media in 2008

You must be thinking NBC. Fox & CBS normally flip flop as #1 network.

And a reminder....Fox is NOT Fox News (which is also #1). I detect partisanship in your comment above. Just to set you straight.
