Fox now promoting DVR use

You must be thinking NBC. Fox & CBS normally flip flop as #1 network.

Depending upon how you measure (demo or total numbers) Fox is #1 in 18-49 and CBS #1 in total viewers. There isn't a giant difference between the numbers in each category except for CW (which really isn't a network).

But that isn't what I was referring to. IMHO, Fox has the worst lineup of shows on any of the four networks. Those that aren't outright silly tend to be disgusting and the show that brought them their ratings winner, American Idol, are just teen popularity contests. With the single exception of Bones I don't find anything of value on Fox.

And a reminder....Fox is NOT Fox News (which is also #1). I detect partisanship in your comment above. Just to set you straight.

I'm unsure why you felt you had to remind me that Fox network and Fox News are two different businesses. Other than I find each virtually worthless I do, in fact, know the difference and didn't reference Fox News in my post. Perhaps it is you being defensive in your comment.

In other news, I'm not sure whether Fox News is #1 overall or not since I could not find direct comparisons between them and the broadcast network news. But it is probably impossible to compare them directly in any event since Fox News consists of a substantial amount of opinion and broadcast news hardly any.

It is hard to compare broadcast network newscasts to cable news channels. The Fox News Channel is the #1 cable news outlet. At best, Bill O'Reilly's show gets about 70% of the ratings that the 3rd place CBS Evening News gets. It's a bit better if you add up the O'Reilly repeat at 11pm. (which would probably be fair since few of the people watching the repeat would have watched the original a few hours earlier) By the same token, since Fox News Channel is on all day, there are probably more people who watch at least some of their shows each day than watch some of the network newscasts each day. That's known as "cume" rating. It's a nearly useless stat in TV.

It is hard to compare broadcast network newscasts to cable news channels.

Since all cable news channels today are not pure news outlets I would say it is impossible to compare them statistically.

The Fox News Channel is the #1 cable news outlet.

Except that Fox "news" isn't. It isn't a total news outlet as much of its broadcast day is occupied by talk and opinion shows. Those are not news in the pure sense.

What made you think the CW Television Network is not a network?

CW, to me, is a distribution outlet for a small number of programs which are almost universally ignored by the potential viewer population.

CW has none of the historical trappings of a bonafide network - news and sports being the most obvious.

Except for broadcast stations hosting its programming, CW operates virtually akin to any of the second-tier cable outlets such as FX, History, TLC etc. AFAIK it does not employ people to provide any insight into standard news, politics or special features that the three major networks do.

Saw a promo for "The Following" last night that had a graphic saying "Set your DVR now!"

I can't recall ever seeing a network promoting the time-shifting of a show. Either Fox has found a way to make money on L+3 and L+7 data or they think it will help C+3 data enough to make it worth promoting. Either way, it is a noteworthy change.

Now if they can only start and end the shows at the time they say. I have to watch the end of "New Girl" live on DTV, which is risky to begin with since signal problems are possible. The part of "Emily Owens" airing at that time has to go on VHS. "Go On" (which I lose the end of) and "The New Normal" prevent me from adding to the end of "New Girl". I also tape "Apartment 23", but since my TiVo is habitually warning me of shows being deleted early if I don't act, and because my affiliate let commercials run over a couple of times, I tape off DTV. The ABC affiliate there has had few or no signal problems.
