Fox Proposes Deal For Conan O'Brien

I really like the idea of Conan on FOX. An 11 PM start time would be nice too. I think a 35 minute head start on Letterman and Leno could really help him. Then after Conan you could still watch most of Letterman and Leno as well. We could have our cake and eat it too. The viewers would win!

It continues to amaze me this discussion concerns four "comedians" who would have never peaked above the TV radar of the 50's.
...I don't think I'd go so far as to say that about Letterman. Although he doesn't do nearly as much of it as he used to, the stuff that made his first big splash -- the Velcro Suit, the bullhorn interruption of a "Today" taping, the Calvert DeForest and Chris Elliot bits -- aren't all that far afield from what Ernie Kovacs was doing on Tonight, Kovacs Unlimited and The Ernie Kovacs Show in the '50s...and Leno seems to have pointedly adopted Bob Hope's clattertongue approach in recent years...

Would'nt it be a hoot if Conan went to FOX using his old Tonight show set and a rerun on an NBC owned cable outfit like Bravo.

I think NBC will have there hands in the new show some how.Whether it's a good deal on the rent of his former studio and or a replay on a cable outfit.

I would run with the 11:00 start this fall on FOX with or without all FOX affilliates with one of these options.

1.)
If a FOX affiliate in a contract to air something in the 11 o'clock hour let that affilate offer the show to a another station in the market first to the MY affiliate.then the another station if the MY station cant do it. With the understanding that they will get the show back when there(Fox affilaite) gets the hour freed up the next season.

2.)

Start it off with what affilates they have and do a rerun the next morning or 7'oclock hour on a cable outfit.

As visually pointed out in another thread, the Conan set at Universal was destroyed. (Probably a smart move by NBC). So any return there would have to start from scratch.

I can see this Fox deal to be quite flexible among the affiliates. Which means you will see Conan start at different times around the country. And I like the idea of offering the show to other stations if the the local Fox doesn't want it. In essence, almost like syndication.

That would cause a bit of a corporate problem within Fox: The network division is separate from the syndication division. They could probably work a deal to cover various bonuses and benefits, but it's not as simple as one or the other. But if Conan self-syndicates with Fox as a partner, it would be strictly syndication, not network.

Networks have always had the right to offer a show to another station in the market if the network's own affiliate rejects it. Used to happen all the time with independent stations picking up affiliate-rejected shows, and it happens now in Salt Lake City with "Saturday Night Live."

Conan will fail at FOX if he continues to use the writers that tanked him at NBC during his Tonight Show run.
Team Coco will have public support for the first week and just like his NBC run, nothing else will happen.
Affiliates will revolt because their syndicated shows received more eyeballs and revenue.

Conan's show will last longer than The Magic Hour making it the longest running FOX show in weekday late night but it will suffer the same tragic fate.
It wont last a year.

I agree with that, but what makes you think Conan won't learn from his mistakes? Putting aside whether or not NBC did him an injustice, or should have given him more time to grow (we can debate that forever), the fact is, his Tonight Show was inferior. He desperately needs new writers. Before taking on his show, Fox should demand that he hire new writers, then ask them to provide some work product for evaluation.

I think it's great if he wants to bring back some of the same behind-the-scenes people ("family" and all that), but it should not include writers, or Andy Richter. Personally, I like Richter, but he's clearly not to everybody's taste.

If Conan brings back the "Conando" sketch - his show should be cancelled on the spot.

Conando Is The Intellectual Property Of NBC ... Just Like The Masturbating Bear.

Sometimes these things can be negotiated. I remember that "Larry Bud Melman" had to go by Calvert DeForest (his real name) for awhile when Letterman went to CBS. But some arrangement was obviously made in regard to Larry Bud and some other supposed intellectual property Dave had left behind at NBC.

But "Conando" should be left to die. The Masturbating Bear was funny about a half dozen times, but it's run its course.
