Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2013/01/21/Media/Fox-Sports-2.aspx

Even though Fox Sports has not formally announced its planned national cable channel Fox Sports 1 yet, the company already has moved forward with plans to flip Fuel into Fox Sports 2 this August.

On Nov. 27, Fox filed a trademark application for a Fox Sports 2 logo with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The new channel’s logo essentially is the Fox Sports logo with the number 2 on the bottom right.

Fuel’s switch to Fox Sports 2 will be announced later this spring and completed in August, around the same time Fox rebrands Speed into Fox Sports 1, sources said.

The same article says that sports would be off FX by the time they start. My question now is does this really mean the end of FSN as a national concept, only keeping it as a group of regional networks?

Yep. So few over the air channels carry play by play sports, FSN is now your local sports station. For example in Tampa, not a single Rays game has been on a local station in years, with the exception of the Fox Game Of The Week, and only and handful of Lightning games made the local CW station.

FSN's appeal as a "national" brand was doomed from the start when they couldn't come up with a viable competitor to ESPN's "SportsCenter." That and a host of failed debate shows (remember "I, Max"?).

ESPN2 works pretty well. Shouldn't be any different with Fox Sports 2 - not "#2", although that might refer to the quality of some of its programming. ;D

I think they'll still have 'national' telecasts of certain Pac-12, Big XII, and C-USA games that will air if there isn't a local/regional pro sports telecast that takes precedence. I live in an area served by Fox Sports South and SportSouth, and have stumbled on several live/replayed Pac-12 basketball games. It may be C-USA games that take up the bulk of these 'national' airings going forward with the probable contractual flexiblity of Fox Sports choosing football games Fox Network, Fox Sports 1 (where the former FX telecasts will go), and FSN/Fox College Sports.

Is it really? Nobody to be taken seriously has ever called Disney's primary sports channel 'ESPN 1', while News Corp seems just fine its primary sports channel 'Fox Sports 1'.

C-USA is on CBS Sports Network.
ESPN getting all the people for Sports Center so if Fox Sports wants people they better get Craig Kilborn,Gary Miller,Steiner and so on and use who they already have Chris Myers,Brian Kenny from MLB Network,Chris Rose and so on to do the Show to complete with Sportscenter,Sports Talk and the one on CBS Sports Network.
Fox thinks converting these channels from niche networks to ones with broader programming will help drive distribution.

Outside of live sports event programming, Fox is planning to launch a sports news operation on both Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2, though initial details of those plans are scant.

When you call it "#2" it infers that either:

a) you are second-best, certainly not first-rate

or

b) a steaming pile of poo

I think ESPN2 disproves that, even if I dont like the network

Oh, really? Tell that to HBO, Showtime, MTV and C-SPAN (in addition to ESPN). Seems it's mostly worked out OK for them.

Or, that you've got so much content to offer that you need a second channel to accomodate it.

Seriously.

This story is really pretty interesting.

Speed will become Fox Sports 1 (81 million)
Fuel will become Fox Sports 2 (37 million)
Fox Soccer will become FX2 with entertainment programming (42 million)
and FX will no longer have sports

Given the low ratings of these channels this makes quite a bit of sense. It also allows FX to have a more established identity as an entertainment channel.

Where Fox is going to have serious trouble is in keeping Fox Soccer/FX2 on cable systems. A transition from one type of sports channel to another is something that's probably not going to get many cable operators to drop a channel. But taking a sports channel and turning it into an entertainment channel means they're probably going to lose some of those 42 million households unless they do some kind of deal.

This does make you wonder though what the long-term prospects are for the FSN regional sports networks.
They carry quite a bit of national programming. Some of that stuff is going to have to go to the new networks. They can't fill all that time with sports news.

There has long been cross over programming between FOX and FSN. I've seen Speed programming, EPL and UEFA games, along with Fuel shows. Since many over the air stations are peeling back from showing many NHL, NBA and MLB games, thats where FSN will make its money. Some over the air local affiliates have even dropped the sports reporting on their nightly news, caving into the cable nets. FSN Regionals will do just fine.

They wouldn't have to touch Fuel if they'd just flip the FCS channels (Which I believe has MORE penetration than Fuel does if I'm not mistaken)

For those who don't get them (Like DirecTV customers) the FCS channels are the college sports channels they have which are rapidly becoming obsolete with the Conferences forming their own networks

If Fox Sports wants to rebrand Fuel with the Fox Sports name, they could name it Fox Sports Extreme or some other catchy name like that as this wouldn't take anything away from what the channel does

Am I the only person who thinks this?

Cheers & 73 ;D

It's also on FSN too. Heck, I think I've even seen a smattering of games on NBC Sports Network too if I'm not mistaken

Fox Sports WILL NOT be doing a sportscast show. They tried that with FSN & FAILED MISERABLY at it. They could however do talk shows though (That would take away a huge chunk of audience away from CBS Sports Network)
Fox thinks converting these channels from niche networks to ones with broader programming will help drive distribution.
And it won't work. Besides they've still got THREE channels devoted to national repeats of FSN programming with little to no live sports programming left YET Fox seems content on letting these channels become shells of their former selves & not do ANYTHING to flip THEM to something worthwhile

Great, they can use of the current FCS channels for a 24/7 sports news channel to compete with ESPNNEWS (Good luck doing that given their history with sports news & the fact that NBC Sports hasn't even launched a sportscast, let alone a 24/7 channel, to sports news & CBS Sports doesn't even have the resources to do one)

Cheers & 73 ;D

And C-SPAN even has a C-SPAN 3. They've got ALL the news channels beaten. Not bad for a shoestring budget operation.....

Not likely the case with Fox (Unless they're working on stuff no one knows about yet)

Cheers & 73 ;D

They have a deal with Sporting News so I guess 24/7 Sports News Channel would work/Sports News Program. CBS has enoth people who post Online/Jon Hayman that they can use on area if they did is a Sports Highlight Show.
