Fox targets Tribune in Seattle

Somehow this reminds me of NBC's dropping KRON and buying KNTV. KNTV, you may recall, was the ABC affiliate in San Jose; when NBC bought it it had to move the transmitter closer to San Francisco and rebrand itself as a San Francisco station. But it seems to have worked out; nothing tells me that KRON will go back to NBC.
Although I would have preferred one of two scenarios in Seattle: (1) KCPQ becoming a Fox o&o, or (2) KIRO becoming a Fox o&o and KCPQ getting CBS, this may all work out. But it's true that KOMO is probably going to be with ABC until at least 2019, since Sinclair just reupped with practically all of its ABC stations. (Long shot that changes that scenario does not happen in Seattle: Hearst at some point buys ABC, which gets Ch. 12 in Greensboro, Ch. 4 in Greenville, SC, and Ch. 13 in Birmingham, with Sinclair going to NBC in all three markets (Chs. 45, 13, and 68, respectively)...but I'm not holding my breath.)

It reminds me of the KNTV situation too. But remember having KRON essentially open allowed FOX to force it's hand and get KTVU. Had KRON not been there, FOX would've had a tough time pulling a strong affiliate like KTVU.

Does Tribune have any leverage with FOX? For instance, not renewing a FOX affiliation in another market?

Or unless Tribune is really considering this: Fox goes to KIRO, CBS goes to KSTW as a CBS O&O again, and (gulp) the CW goes to KCPQ.

Tribune has 14 FOX affiliates, including KCPQ. I'm surprised relations between them has gotten as chilly as it has. I don't know if Tribune is going to retaliate by dropping FOX from their other stations.

That would be a bad retaliation unless they had another network to pick up.

Very bad retaliation where would Fox land on if Tribune does drop the Fox affiliation on the other 13 markets? The only one I could think of is in San Diego they could move to KUSI but outside of San Diego, I have no idea where they're going to land on. (Sacramento, Denver, etc.)

Peter Liguori has said that wants "a seat" at The CW and put to Tribune-produced programming on the network. If relations with FOX goes south, they could flip some of their stations to The CW.

At least some of the Fox programming has been on a slide. American Idol isn't exactly the biggest thing on TV these days. Fox needs some new programming that can emulate the success of AI.

ABC is gradually moving to channel 68 in Birmingham, so that's out of the picture for the foreseeable future.

God I hope this does not happen. Fox has some pretty strong Tribune-owned affiliates like in Salt Lake, Cleveland, Grand Rapids, Sacramento, etc. and would hate to see one or all of them flip to the CW and Fox goes to a smaller station or a subchannel. The CW is a major network I understand but, unless CBS and Time Warner plan to air something like NFL nationwide coverage on the CW, I don't see it as something that can break ties with the big four affiliates. And I certainly hate to see Tribune flip a big four affiliate like KFOR, WHNT, or KFSM to the CW.

Yeah, and what happens to KZJO? Can KBCB be Estrella TV 22 hours of the day and MNTV 2 hours?

Here would be my ideal swap of affiliations in Seattle:

KBCB would become a MyNetworkTV O&O

KZJO would become an Independent station, thus competing with KONG.

Except for 2 hours of MyNet starting at midnight, KZJO *is* an independent station competing with KONG. Is there something you'd prefer to see in those extra two hours that you don't see now? (Or is it that you'd rather see MyNet in its regular 8-10 PM slot?)

I'd rather see competition, Seattle is big enough to support 2 stations that not affiliated with any TV network, look at San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose., they're big enough to support 2 stations not an affiliate with a TV network, wouldn't be that hard in seastlle, if The Bay Area can do it, so can Seattle.

MyNetworkTV isn't a TV network! It's a "syndication service"! Pay no attention to the fact the vast majority of our stations brand with "My", or that we have our own stations in some markets that box the CW out of having same, or that a lot of smaller markets have digital subchannels just to air our programming!

Seriously, KZJO - or "Joe TV" - really is practically an independent station already. It sounds like what you really want is for KBCB to become a new general entertainment station, regardless of what that means for MyNet in Seattle.

By the way, San Fran is the #6 media market, while Seattle is somewhere around #12. And San Fran has way more stations in general than you might expect out of any market, certainly one of its size (not one of the Big Three), which is probably a result of its relative isolation from other markets.
