Fox targets Tribune in Seattle

I have to imagine this is all about leverage more than anything else. You don't buy a station just to serve as a satellite when you don't have anything for it to be a satellite for, and KBCB is too shitty a station for anything else. Even for MyNet, you'd rather buy KZJO (or really ANYTHING else).

But then, the big networks seem to think of themselves as cable channels that also happen to transmit over the air, so I guess anything's possible...

It's pure leverage. Even the most extreme example I know, when South Bend had their 1995 switch and WBND-LP tried to boost their tower to cover the main part of the market, that still took 5-6 months to do, and they didn't get on equal ground until the digital transition. Fox isn't going to be able to move KBCB down from Bellingham for at least a year or two (notwithstanding the usual NIMBY tower fights/underserved Bellingham 'viewers' trying to assert to the FCC they need their ramshackle ShopHQ affiliate, whose only 'local' program is a weekly infomercial for the local Pike Street-like market), and forget even a bare-bones WJZY news operation.

If they succeed somewhere else, it switches to MundoFox and probably just sits out the last two years until KZJO's MyNet affiliation expires; since they already treat the network as late night filler it would be one really misguided and expensive way to get it back into primetime in Seattle. But look at WFGX in Ft. Walton/Pensacola/barely Mobile; it got MyNet years ago and it's still got the 'delete right away off the lineup since it mostly airs Jewelry TV' treatment by most viewers.

What do you guys make of this?

[From Wikipedia: KBCB]

On September 23, Tribune stated that it had been notified by Fox that its affiliation with KCPQ would be terminated as of January 17, 2015, but that discussions between the two companies were still ongoing."

Well, I thought Fox might go after KVOS in Bellingham. I never thought of KBCB. But I'll bet Fox is pressuring Trib by preparing move KBCB into Seattle, much like NBC moved KNTV into San Francisco.

WOW!! That was unexpected. So is KCPQ going to be a subchannel affiliate, go off the air altogether, or maybe become a satellite of another station, like KBTC, for Northwest Washington. It would be weird to see KCPQ licensed to Bellingham.

But remember, that's Wikipedia. It might be a fake piece. I thought Fox was strong with KCPQ - with 12th Man coverage, good news and syndicated programs.

Losing KCPQ will definitely be a personal loss. I grew up with the Saturday morning cartoons, local news, AND the rubbish signals from Gold Mountain. I'd like to see KCPQ remain local, and provide some form of independent content for Seattle, but look at KONG; there is absolutely nothing of interest on that station. It would be really cool to see KCPQ fold into a station like WPCH (the old WTBS) in Atlanta, perhaps emulating what KVOS used to be like before they took on ME-TV.

As far as KCPQ going to Bellingham, that would really surprise me. They really wouldn't have much to gain (from what I can tell).

I think there is one question here that is on the mind of most football fans: What does this mean for Seahawks coverage? I for one have no idea.

Trib hasn't announced any plans for KCPQ. Their press release indicated that they're still in negotiations with Fox over the Seattle station. My bet is that Fox ends up with KCPQ and either turns KBCB into a satellite of KCPQ--or just sells KBCB outright.

I think Fox will negotiate with Trib to get KCPQ, KTVI/ and WITI (and file a lawsuit challenging the cap--while getting a temporary order or waiver that lets them keep all of the stations during the challenge). What does Trib get? A bunch of cash, maybe an agreement for some of Fox's stations to carry Tribune-produced programming.

Either way, that would be a benefit for KBCB. The programming on KBCB right now is really not worth being an over-the-air television station.

If this is true (which it is) what network is KCPQ going to be affiliating with or is. kONG going to receive competition and Seattle gets its 2nd TV station that's not affiliated with any network? HUGE! Shakeup in Seattle

Its not hard to compete with KONG. That station is a complete joke if you ask me. Nothing on there besides spill programming from KING (i.e., Doctor Phil), Hollywood gossip, and infomercials. I know that you cannot expect TOO much from an independent station, but when you compare it next to other independent stations, the programming doesn't really have much appeal.

So you believe that KCPQ will become an independent station correct?

I'm going to predict that KCPQ will become an indie on 1/17/15

Are you at all familiar with the old KVOS-12? They are a "Me-Tv" affiliate these days, but they were one great independent station for the longest time. If KCPQ could emulate that, they'd be doing much better than KONG. Still, its a little sad when you were accustomed to such high ratings (thanks to local football coverage).

Right and it really wouldn't surprise me if Tribune where to go after Monday and Thrusday Night Football package of games that involves the Seahawks, I believe they would still want to cover actual Seahawks games. Remember what NBC did when they moved to KNTV from KRON that I believe it'll repeat itself all over again.

Well one thing is for sure, this is all about to get very interesting. Even if the Fox Corporation DOES end up with KCPQ, we're going to see an interesting change with KBCB. I think its time to shake things up a little regardless.

That I agree and it's also time for KONG to get some competition going in the Seattle market as far as indies go.

Independent TV is usually pretty cool; USUALLY. I really cannot remember the last time I tuned into KONG, but it must be like 10 years ago now. Is that really what they are going for?
