FOX40 News UPDATE!

UPDATE: FOX40's News that was supposed to launch in May of this year and has yet to get on the air, is back on track and heading to the final stages before launch. No date for roll-out is set and I wouldn't post it here anyway, but I did want people to understand it was still going to happen...and soon. Stay Tuned!

And where do you get your information from?

I understand that laid off Production Manager and a Creative Services Producer this week because of "budget cuts".

Yeah, that makes sense. Lay off the people making your spots while a news staff that has never been on the air keeps drawing a check. You just have to wonder where these biz theories come from--cracker jack boxes? I wouldnt be surprised if WLBT or JTV picks up Tim Irvine. Very nice guy who's not afraid of work and knows his stuff

I second the comments about Tim. His stuff is stellar.

An early newscast in the central time zone, small market is a leap of faith at best

Someone from the news at that station came into where I worked. They had called before, and I was told that the news would begin on Labor Day. When I spoke to the newscaster in person, she said that the news department was still anxiously awaiting to hear the date from the station manager about when they would be going on the air.

The latest is January. Mid-month last I heard. They will face a challenge since the front office seems to be in disarray, but the News Director is pretty solid and the main anchor is good. Weather guys are decent and the sports department although green, is hungry. All in all they will be the least experienced of the 4 news stations but may offer a breath of fresh air. The reporters seem to be the weakest link in their approach. Most all of them right out of school, and one of the better producers just bolted for a better (more stable) gig. If the economy wasn't so bad the outlook would be better, but in the current state of economic crisis, they will really have to be on their A game from the word go, and every night after that. For the people I know involved, I hope they make it. As for the front office, they will be gone as soon as the stations sell, and not a moment too soon before they completely ruin a lot of people's hard work.

I hope they are successful, but to be honest, It's going to be tough when you have shows like CSI on the other channel. They have tried news before and flopped miserably back when they brought Michael Rubinstein over from WLBT. Which was canceled after only a short time on the air. They also used to have a short news update between shows at the top of the hour and that didn't last long either. What I wish would happen is for them to add a network newscast from Fox to compete with the big 3, since a handful of viewers (old folks) don't get Fox News because we use an antenna. Hopefull WBDD's news will offer some national stories shot by Fox. But it still looks like they would do just as well having news at 6 and 10, so it wouldn't conflict with something on the other channel.

Hey Fly...you suggestion of a FOX Newscast to compete with the CBS, NBC and ABC nightly newscast is a good one..I'm surprised that FOX News Channel hasn't offered a 30-minute package of the "FOX Report" (6pm CST) hosted by Ole Miss guy (BTW), Shepard Smith to
FOX affiliates to strip 5p-7pm local or even 9p-10:30 pm local.

The new Fox 40 News at 9 debuted tonight and I was rather impressed. There's also a 30-minute sports show afterwards (which I'm assuming will be a weekend deal). So far, so good.

Be interested in seeing it tonight..without the weekend anchor.  Nothing against her personally...the weekend anchors are
weak on all the local stations.
And, why are they trying to do an hour. Pop a good syndicated show in at 9:30...Had House at 10 last night

in case anyone is interested WDBD news is also broadcasting in full widescreen high definition. The first newscast in Jackson to do so. Including the footage shot outside and on location. Even some network newscasts are mostly HD in the studio and SD outside the studio. The CBS morning show was still in old SD the last I checked. WDBD news looks fantastic in HD especially on some of the location video.
My only complaint is WDBD is now putting pop-up ads for local businesses at the bottom of the screen in the middle of a program. More screen clutter. I hate that.

Kathy Times is actually the weeknight anchor, though I don't know why she was on this weekend. Of all the weekend anchors, Roslyn Anderson on WLBT is by far the best. Plus, she's been doing weekend anchoring for so long now (at least a decade or more). BTW, Kathy is no stranger to this market, having one time worked as a reporter and weekend anchor over at WJTV in the 90s.

I don't recall ever seeing a 9pm (10pm EST) that was not one hour, but all they do in the last 30 minutes is rehash the the first 30. And how many times do we need to see the weather forecast?

I also wonder why WDBD chose to launch the newscast on a Saturday night. Perhaps to work any kinks out?

I guess now that WDBD has weather they will be cutting into my shows whenever there is a thunderstorm in Tishamingo Co.

The HD is nice. The product is IMHO unimpressive.
No compelling reason to tune in. Several reasons to
tune out.
