Frank Shiers

Or, Frank Shyershh, ash he shesh it.

I don't know if the spelling is correct - he seems to have disappeared from the KIRO site. I heard about 30 minutes of his filling in for Doris today and honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry. But either way, I'll try to be kind.

In those few moments, when he was ranting about the gov. negotiating with unions rather than the legislature doing it, he made his disgust with Gregoire/Democrats/Liberals very evident but he does it in a passive/aggressive way that to the casual listener would be pretty harmless. Then, innocent as pie, he asks for "our" opinions but making it quite obvious that A) there's no way you'll change his thinking; B) he might take 3 or 4 brief calls because he spent 45 minutes yakking, spots, etc.; and C) he's an editorial cartoonist.

And THAT'S where I had to chuckle. Has anyone on this board seen his work as an "editorial cartoonist"? My gawd, it's completely juvenile. When he first started annoying KIRO listeners years back and announcing himself as an "editorial cartoonist" it's as if he believes he's the Second Coming of Herb Block. Uhhhh, Frank? Check yerself, mah man. What you do would be what I'd expect from a high school junior - at best. The cartoons are in these teeny little weeklies - freebies like North Kitsap Gazette - and if he gets paid at all, my guess is it's in free pencils or wi-fi use while in the building.

I had a few buddies at KBSG and mention his name? Eye rolling and deep sighs - as in "can you believe that guy?"

Frank, I don't think you're the devil incarnate. But you are, at the very best, a hopeless amateur "cartoonist" and any editorial opinion expressed is very limp and try one time to be a bit more balanced. [EDIT]you are, at heart, a man who would cheer loudly if a tragedy befell a WA state democrat. There's a darkness in you that not all the drawing paper and talk topics on earth can hide.

[EDIT-personal attack]

Just a suggestion...if you find yourself shedding a tear (re "laugh or cry") check first to be sure it's not allergies.

Unfortunately many of us don't remember FS in the FONDEST context.

@WKomm

Let's see your artwork in the newspaper before you can judge what is art and what is not. Obviously a sizeable news organization is willing to pay Shiers for his work. Can you do the same?

Frank also escaped the axe which got nearly 20 employees out of the Eastlake building. He's handling production and is the fill in host for KIRO when needed.

He's still employed. What's your excuse?

Well, I don't care for Frank Shiers as a talk show host and not for the main fact that my politics don't match his. I just think he has a consescending tone about him. Maybe it stems from his teaching background, who knows. I will say, that I did enjoy him as a DJ on KBSG. He was fine when talking about the oldies and introducing the records. Too bad that rug was pulled put from under him. It fit him better than talk show host.

I forgot to add that one of the most annoying things about Shiers is that he uses the phrase "not so much" WAY too much.

Why attack someone like Shiers? He's just a substitute while Dori's on vacation and while he's a bit on the bland yet arrogant side for me, he's just makin a living like everyone else.

This thread seems particularly hurtful and for no reason. I don't even know who Mr. Shiers is and I listen to a lot of radio. It sounds like he works part-time, so why pick on him? I can understand disliking the major morning shows and commenting on them. I can even understand commenting on some of the full-time talk hosts outside of morning drive. Commenting on others in a bitter way really makes no sense, or difference. You can't even pull up numbers to balance this perspective with actual ratings since the guy doesn't even do a regular shift.
Sheesh.

@ DJ Dan - Shiers used to host the 10 pm to 1 am slot on KIRO M-F before the weekday line up changes. He was temporarily extended to 9 pm during the post NY Vinnie Sports Talk era. It was kind of nice to have a local show at those hours, especially when he'd be gone and "Goldie" (David Goldstein) would fill in.

As for Mr. Shiers, he's nice enough when I've met him on location in person. That's more than I can say for the tone of this thread. In a week of pretty quiet news, he's done his best to fill three hours. That's not to say he's a Dave Ross, but at least he's trying.

:) ...Hold on tharrrrr...
I worked with Frank years ago, and I'll stand right up and say that he is a true gentleman, very nice in nature, a great guy to work with. I'm happy to see that he is still at work and it sounds as though he is doing a good job at it too...Since it seemed to have worked up enough emotion to start this post. Though his personal beliefs may not line up totally with yours (and though I missed the broadcast but it seems from the above description, Franks leanings are different than my own), isn't it GREAT that he is a guy with a thought out opinion of his own, and not to say the least, that he is free to speak his beliefs while leaving room for a what I'm sure was good radio call in fodder.

And of his cartoon work, I remember seeing some of his work that floored me. Sure not every frame would strike a cord with everyone, and I'm sure that is part of the nature of that beast. But like I said... Some just floored me and had me laughing for days.

So THUMBS UP TO FRANK! A great guy that has had great success no matter what storm he has to endure!

DJ Alan

Well, we have mixed opinions.

djdan - I know, I know. I'm often not proud of myself when I hit "post" but if this forum was just "he's so great" and "I love KGGGGF" what good would that be? I think Shiers is a condescending, pompous ass. I might regret all this as I ck out of this life so I ask forgiveness now.

talkerdj - We're all just making a living. And in radio, that's it for a lot of us - making a living.

Seatteobserver - He can try harder to include others. He spends 45 minutes repeating his take overandoverandover and takes a few calls. To me, that's flipping through the morning paper, picking a liberal topic and telling us what WE should think, let alone his take.

CorporateSuit - I don't understand your post. Do I need an excuse to post about a guy I don't care for? You may not believe me but I work full time in radio as well. If I get an 8, that means 92% of listeners aren't listening or don't like me but for that 8%, I get a bonus and a happy GM. It's the business we're in. By just going on the air, Shiers invites both criticism AND praise, no? And haven't you heard him go off on people HE doesn't like? It's passive aggressive but he is really pretty vicious at times.

As for his "cartooning" - I don't think it's really an opinion, it just sucks. What are these major news organizations paying him? The Kitsap Review? The Port Orchard Frog Gigger? Please - he gets very, very little pay if anything for this stuff. That's a fact. I've been around all forms of media all my professional life. You might like his work but please don't make it out that he gets big cash.

I apologize for my comment. My point of reference is from a long time ago and people can certainly change for the better over time. I'll go with benefit-of-doubt and assume we've both matured somewhat along the path.

This is the perfect capper to this thread ...

In the Kitsap paper, he now signs his "work" as Frank Shiers Editorial Cartoonist.

Brother - what an insufferable ego. Maybe he did after reading these posts and deciding that goading me into slapping him around further couldn't hurt. Whatever, it's just a terrific example of a big case of self-importance. Can you imagine a columnist for the Times or P-I signing a piece as "Joe Blow - Newspaper Columnist"?

Reminds me of the folks who have a PhD in something like counselling or water management and sign correspondence as "Dr." Yeah, sure ...

Well, Frank, thanks for the laughs. And I'm not talking about your anemic "cartoons" bud.
