Franken FM

since all FM stereos got to 87.7
Not all. I've owned many digital FM tuners which only go down to 87.9 MHz.

I also have a Sanyo stereo system from 1986 that strangely only goes up to 1600 kHz on AM, even though 1610 kHz had been a licensed TIS frequency for years before it was built, and at the time Technics and others were already making AM tuners that were built to accommodate the future Expanded Band and went up to 1710 or even 1720 kHz on AM.

So are they going to use Ch 6 for Digital video and also analog audio on top, all within CH. 6? if so, sounds like another music video channel like LP27 KKDJ, but with the additional analog audio for FM radio.

FCC has a few 87.9 FMs out there. They are designated by the FCC as Channel 200. 88.1 is CH 201, etc... I think that the FCC was limiting them to 10 watts.
The FCC used to forbid FM stations at the low end of the dial if there was a TV channel 6 located there. I think they eliminated that rule with analog TV going away. TV got protection from 88.1+ but 88.1+ channels don't get protection from CH 6 analog audio??

This thread reminds me of a similar attempt of co-habitating two technologies.. When I attended NAB around the year 2000 there was a company promoting a scheme for ATSC1 and NTSC to share the same 6 MHz channel. I guess that went nowhere. ATSC3 and analog FM together seem more tractable. Even if there is only bandwidth for mono FM it still could be rented out to a church group or ethnic broadcaster.

I looked up the STA for the KZNO-LD combo ATSC3+FM test. Indeed, the Commission set the audio at 87.75 and it must provide a similar service contour to the digital TV service. The FCC expects interim and final reports concerning any interference issues.

I doubt the FCC would grant a similar arrangement for the Fresno area. With Class B KFCF at 88.1 Mhz there has to be 69 km separation A-to-B (assuming KMCF audio is treated as a class A). Even shortspacing there's a 63km minimum separation. I will have to get out the measuring tape... sorry folks: 39km. KFCF's lawyers will have a fit.(Moving KMCF to the KMPH site would give things a 67km separation but at a loss to the signal level in Fresno.)

There is ONE licensed 87.9. K200AA Sun Valley NV at 28watts ERP. It's a translator. Channel 200 is only available for Class D stations displaced. No other class can use the channel.

Something is wrong with KSFH-FM. I heard nothing on the frequency a few weeks ago. The ownership shows to be Mountain View Public Broadcasting. This is the same owners as KIGS-AM 620 Hanford, KRPU-AM 1210 Rocklin/Sacramento, KMKY-AM 1310 Oakland and a few more. There has been no filing for a renewal on KSFH-FM.

I think I saw something about the school that held the KSFH license giving it up. Possibly donating it to some municipal entity or agency (?). The other "same owners" mentioned look to be each owned by other Punjabi entities.
I wondered why channel 200, 87.9mHz, would be assigned to Sun Valley. I was surprised to see that that Reno/Sun Valley market looks to be "all radioed up" with stations, mostly translators, on pretty much every alternate frequency. Talk about being "over radioed".

TV Tech has posted a story about Cocola's KMCF-LD shifting to ATSC 3.0 and hopes of adding an FM audio service, a la FrankenFM. The story is here:

I don't know how a Franken audio service can added given Fresno's KFCF sits at 88.1 . 88.1 is a full Class B . If the KMCF audio service were treated as a class A shortspace you still need 63km separation.
