Frankie and the Baby

I remember when I was back at WKXP in Benton doing the morning show with my then wife. We were told to never mention on-air that we were married for some unknown reason. However, when people asked us in person if we were a couple, we would never deny it. A few listeners told us that we should have mentioned our marriage on the air, because it would have added a dimension to the show that was lacking.

It just goes to show that putting a little bit of the "real you" on the air can be a good thing.

Some of you guys have the mentality of a jock! I'm not asking if it's ok to bring some of your personal life into your show, I applaud that and certainly did that when I was on the air... it's the use of an adopted child... the exploitation of an infant that I'm questioning! Yeah your car broke down this morning on the way to work.. your Wife is a ditz, your inlaws are creeps, you're having mid-life crisis.. all fun to reveal... but saying "come to my live sponsor broadcast at an ice cream store and maybe you'll see my new adopted infant enjoy her first taste of ice cream!" I'm sure the agency that approved the adoption would have liked to know that this kid is being used as a promotional tool. Talk about the child on the air, what it's like to change diapers for the first time, have the kid throw up on you, those forst words & steps, maybe bring her to a county fair.. but I'm talking about "live" remotes and using the child to bring in customers... wrong.. wrong.. wrong!i

The word that immediately comes to mind is smarmy. Yeah, smarmy fits real nice. And we all know how smarmy sales reps can be, it ain't exactly something new. I almost had a fistfight with a rep once over his trying to turn a buck off of something I was doing, so I know precisely what you are talking about, and feel just as you do, emo.

Thanks "g"... I can remember when I was a kid a local jock talked about his big night last night, DOING HIS LAUNDRY! But it was humerous and made him real & accessable. Just as in the Howard Stern movie when his girlfriend tells him that when he stopped acting like a jock and for once acted like himself that he was finally listenable. Frankie is a great talent, funny, personable and hard working. You're 100% correct that sales or management would exploit just about anything for ratings and bucks. I'm suprised Frankie allowed references to meeting the kid at remotes. If MACIC 93 has a remote comming up at Jiffy Lube will Frankie invite us to come out for the childs first fluid change?

The more I think about teaming Frankie up with someone...the more I think its a bad idea. If it's the wrong person...and we all know how many times that has happened....people turn and turn quick. Sometimes its best to leave things they way they are.

Okay, so let me get this straight (I have the mind of a jock, you know)...

So, real family is okay to use, but adopted kids are out? Where is the sense in that?

And, honestly, after speaking with people who have adopted for a series of stories on adoption in my newspaper days, people who have had trouble having a child and are finally able to complete the adoption process (which is lengthy and costly) are so overjoyed that they want to share their new child with the world and its brother.

Again, if you don't like it, DON'T LISTEN.

And, as for my jock-like mind, it allowed me to earn a Ph.D., so it can't be all that dense...

Let me spell it out for those who can't see the forest for the trees. Someone adopts a baby and they're thrilled, terrific. Someone on the radio adopts a baby and they're thrilled, terrific and maybe it raises some adoption awareness. Someone on the radio adopts a baby and talks about bringing the baby along to a remote as if it were a prize wheel, no longer terrific. At best misplaced enthusiasm, at worst, borderline abuse.

See ya around the Mensa meeting Doctor.

Somehow I doubt that ... for one, I'm not a member. (I'll be nice and leave the other reason out...)

Again, I have to defend him here because on the air means during his regular shift, remotes, etc.

Radio IS exploitation. Deal with it. Stern brings strippers to events, Frankie brings his kid ... same thing. Get people there, get people listening, get people talking about you - that's the bottom line. 8)

I know Frankie. I like Frankie. I don't listen to the show, so all my info comes off this board. He's a decent guy, and I know he'll do what's right. I don't think I'd take my kid to a remote to be on display, but it's his life.

Yeah, that seems like pretty much the same thing. Will he have his kid strip? Maybe when she's older.

Okay, [EDIT] dude...

FYI, I was just saying that bringing someone else to appear at a remote, no matter WHO that is, has been commonplace in radio for a long time.

[EDIT-inflammatory]

I'm gonna suggest you try one of two things Mac,

A) Quit while you're behind, or

B) That hole's gonna need a bigger shovel

Look Mac, here's the deal. I have never heard Frankie on the air intentionally. If ever I hear him, it's most likely on a spot in a store or somewhere I've walked into that has Magic on their radio. So I don't know exactly the context in which he was talking about his adopted baby.

But take a step back and look at the argument you're trying to make here. You compared Howard Stern attracting listeners with strippers and Frankie possibly trying to do the same thing with his baby. Did he really say "Come on down to XYZ Store and maybe you'll see my baby enjoy her first taste of ice cream!"? If he did that's worse than strippers.

So take a deep breath, maybe a little less coffee or switch to decaf. But really, think it over.

(Sound of Noxema music bed)

Anncr: "Oh, baby, see Frankie's at the Mall."

(Heavy Noxema beats)

Anncr: "Oh, baby baby. Frankie in the Morning, Frankie in the Evening, Frankie and his baby at the Mall."

(Music up and out.)

Yeah.. that's what the promo stated, that's why I decided to write this afterall instead of letting it pass. "Come to (Sponsor) this Saturday for the grand opening and maybe you'll see my Daughter enjoy her first taste of Ice Cream"... Now if the kid doesn't show up imagagine all the p*ssed off listners who hang on every word about this kid who are gonna say "HEY WHERE'S THE KID, I CAME ALL THE WAY OUT HERE TO SEE THE KID!"... so I'm guessing she showed up.. either that or he's gonna dangle the notion of her showing up at every remote just to increase traffic..
