Fred Toucher returns

Without knowing anything behind the scenes, I'm theorizing that Rich is looking at Fred the way a brother looks at another who is spirling out of control. Perhaps he's at a crossroad where all he wants is for his friend to get better, and might be where he feels that "tough love" is the only avenue left to travel. Going back to when they were on WBCN, Fred had that interview at River Rave where he was beyond intoxicated, and both Rich and Crash Clark had to try and bail Fred out.

Even Anthony Cumia made jokes about Fred being an alcoholic, back on Opie and Anthony. And to be called out by Anthony Cumia for drinking too much is like being obese by Fat Albert. You know that he can spot his own kind.

Alcoholism is a progressive disease, the older/longer you abuse it the worse it gets.

Fred got sober at least once before in 2020, for some reason he was not able to maintain sobriety.

When you stop drinking, the progression still happens, if you stop drinking when you are 40, and start drinking again at 60, you don't pick up where you left off at 40. Your body reacts as if you have been abusing it all along.

Not everyone gets on the first try, some can't maintain it and relapse several times, some never beat the bottle.

The guy who helped me get sober 21 years ago was not able to maintain long term sobriety and one afternoon he sat in his favorite chair and ate a bullet.

If Fred reads this board, and needs someone to help him get and maintain sobriety, feel free to send me a PM.

Watching him implode on Twitter last weekend was painful because he was in a real bad place

I realize it may be a chicken and egg thing. But this situation is a mental health crisis/suicide concern first and foremost. It appears severe depression bordering on a suicide attempt is what drove him to alcohol this time. Alcohol was a byproduct here. Not the other way around. It’s what he turned to DURING his crisis. Not causal. And not the reason he was ordered held in treatment for I believe 3 nights.

If you look at the timetable/admission/release and WBZ-FM statement, that’s NOT an alcohol issue. He was deeply mentally disturbed and threatened to kill himself. Just look at the tweets. Wish Fred the best. This is a very difficult situation.

We’ll I guess you have it all figured out then don’t you…..nice of you to share your pronouncements with everyone.
The Timetables on his admission and release clearly imply a suicidal and/or deeply depressed/dangerous to himself situation. You don’t hold some one at that place for that long for drinking. It doesnt work that way.

Fred reverted to his old nemesis in a time of crisis I agree. He admits. But it looks like that was a byproduct of a personal crisis. In this case. I’m not saying a lifetime of battling alcohol wasn’t a root cause of many of his life issues. Certainly. But Fred had apparently made real progress in recent years giving up alcohol only to REVERT when bad things happened.

Bad things happen…personal crisis builds…can’t deal with all this stuff…become suicidal…revert to drink.

It’s not the reverse.

As for “pronouncements”—I see nothing BUT “pronouncements” here on some one who a.) is a public figure who brought all this stuff public himself. b) is cohost of the top rated Boston radio program. And c.) my “pronouncement” was on a radio discussion board.

Granted not as exhilerating as to whether I can hear WMEX on my toaster in Quincy along with the 14 other daily listeners who enjoy it the traditional route. But significant —and front page of Boston Globe—nonetheless.
