FREE FM DIES AT 5PM TODAY

While I thought the joke got old after about 20 minutes, I do think its good as far as stunts go.

For everyone who thinks it sounds "stupid" or might drive away the few remaining Free FM listeners, it's a stunt. It's not a format, and as such it isn't supposed to sound good.

Good stunting should be the radio equivalent of a road accident...everyone slows down to look, because if they're lucky, they might see a dead guy. Judging by the reaction, a lot of people are looking at the corpse of Free FM. That's the idea.

If people take the time to post about how the stunt "sucks" on the internet, then the stunt has worked.

If people take the time to call the radio station to complain, the stunt has worked.

If (and I'm sure they're begging for this) another media outlet like a TV station or newspaper does a story on it, the stunt worked.

It fails if no one talks about it, so by that standard, this stunt is working just fine.

One thing I've noticed about "Free Paris" is that "Renaldo" keeps mentioning tomorrow at 5pm. He does so on the majority of the breaks, so that's when the real flip happens.

I'll be listening...and I'll bet that everyone who thinks this is "stupid" will be tuned in as well.

;)

The stupid thing to do would be to judge whether or not a stunt is stupid by how many radio freaks talk about it on a chat board.

I have heard many format change stunts and done a few myself. For my money this is by far the best I have ever heard. "Renaldo" (the jock) is taking calls from people willing to play along. He is telling them to sign the petition on the site and to "get ready for the big PARTY Friday at 5pm". Brilliant no matter what spoke of the format wheel they end up on.

I've been in radio a long time, and I don't think it's a stunt. Look at it this way, it's way better than Free FM.

Much better.

"get ready for the big PARTY Friday at 5pm".

*waits for everyone to check party1015.com, party1015fm.com, etc*

If it's going to be Party1015, they're waiting until the last minute...Available.

Don't know what it's going to be, but they should think about flooding every Free FM station with this stunt and flip them all. That includes The Zone in Pittsburgh.

Great stunt. Sounds like Jerry Clifton, and he's had success consulting stations in Phoenix.

I think this stunting is brilliant. I've heard so many lame segues into a new format over the years that this stands out as one of the better ones. It's comical to hear this guys phoners and the whole premise around paris hilton I'm sure is getting some peoples attention.

I assume you're joking. For 20 minutes, maybe, not HOURS AND HOURS. Get a hold of yourself.

Tonight, I saw three signs that say "101.5 FREE FM", with "FREE PARIS" in pink text, in Tempe. One is at the intersection of 202 & Scottsdale/Rural Road (the light westbound off-ramp from the 202 onto Scottsdale/Rural), and two others (and I'm sure plenty more) are along Mill Avenue.

While I can certainly understand and respect that many people hate this stunt, I personally think it's great. They are capitalizing on a topic that is top-of-mind among the target demo of the station that will debut at 5pm today.

Exactly. I guess I still fit into the "target demo" and Paris is old news. This would've been funny last week.

Maybe it's brilliant for radio but if so, I didn't realize radio was that unhip. (wait, what am I saying?)

Love it! Can't wait to hear what the real format is going to be. Personally I will miss FM talk radio. Hope that hop is not in their future.

101.5 JAMZ Blazin the valley's hitz and hip hop!

The "Big Snaps" bit had me laughing out loud in my office. I can't stand listening to the Paris Hilton songs, but Renaldo is worth the price of admission.

No format flip today! Its happening right now. Is it going to be all gay radio?
Who's Renaldo? Tom has faded away on KZON. How do you like this a gay jack format!
Is it any wonder why CBS Radio sucks so bad?

Once again, CBS is borrowing from the Howard Stern playbook... "Lance Eluction", anyone?

Sure sounds like a Clifton Stunt. Remember "Steve"? If this isn't a Clifton consulted station - it sure sounds like sonething he'd do.

My god, that awful music is really Paris Hilton?

Seriously, I didn't realize music that horrible is actually listened to by anyone.

I'd rather hear pigs being slaughtered than that music.

When are we going to get our Latvian Polka station?
