I thought for sure KB1OKL & Savage would be here to bemoan WBCN as an HD channel...

How you doing Don, still spouting off about the love of your life, HD? You must miss us.

Sam if you want BCN to be heard by only the people who live in a small circle around the Pru, keep it on HD, if you want a potentially huge audience put it on the web. I live near Worcester, I have one of the best HD radios going (oxymoron, actually) and I can't get WZLX in HD period usually. Incidentally Sam I listened to BCN for over twenty years until the format drastically changed during the mid 90's and would love to hear you and BCN again, you guys were my life for many years but forget HD, it's a dead horse walking, you need to stream if you want to be heard again. You guys were the best, you deserve far better than to be relegated to HD.

Right on cue......

Nope, not spouting off about it at all....just wondering when the knee-jerk reaction would kick-in.

Funny, you claimed that FM exploded in part due to WBCN.

Now that they are on HD (using your rationale), HD should explode!

WBZ-FM now has 3 HD channels! Doesn't look like it's going away. ;-)

Absolutely NO disagreement - we MUST be streaming, in addition to HD. Most industry people believe that ultimately streaming is where ALL "radio" will be. I won't bother arguing with that either. They're likely right. BUT...BUT...two things: 1. the distribution of streaming has yet to become as ubiquitous as it needs to be and probably won't for at least a few more years. 2. The receiving technology has GOT to become simpler and more straight-forward (like the Tivoli?) Non-early-adaptor Boomers (most Boomers) and even many older X-Gens WANT a simple "radio" box; they are warm and comfortable with that. HD offers that. TRUE, presently HD's BIG drawback is its weak signal but that too CAN be fixed. The FCC has been testing a 10db power increase in a few selected markets and I sure hope they'll rapidly roll it out nationally. That increase will make the HD signal pretty much equivalent to the regular analog RF signal. It is absolutely true, Rock FM (originally underground/progressive rock fm) is what MADE FM viable; and I DO believe we could do that again for HD, faster than streaming will become pervasive. BUT we DO WANT streaming NOW. SO...express yourselves to both the broadcast managers ("We want FreeformBCN in stereo high fidelity, ie streaming and HD2") and to the FCC "Boost the HD power!"

Sam, I hope you can be streaming on the web. I got the Sony XDR-10HDiP mainly for an IPod dock for my wife, but it could receive HD Radio.I can get about 2/3 of the Boston FM stations in HD about 30 miles south of Boston. Any chance of going to WBMX -HD2? Freeform BCN should be on 104.1 not 98.5
Also. do you still have a copy of the WBCN Strike Broadcast of 1979 on ZBC?

The extended delays in starting our streaming has been and still IS very frustrating; but I was told by engineering just this past week that streaming SHOULD get under way by the end of this coming week. My fingers are crossed. As well, I sure hope that we'll soon get moved back to a full stereo high fidelity HD2 spot on one of the four HD2 channels CBS has in Boston. Finally, presently we have about 2000 songs in. We are heading for 6000! The average modern radio station has 1000 +/- a few. AND, we plan to get live DJs, with worthwhile stuff to say and talk about, on over the course of the next few months. In other words, I am working my butt off to "do the 21st Century version of what we were doing in the late 60s into the 80s," the musical diversity, the spirit, the soul, the attitude. Express yourself to everyone! - Sam Kopper

Ok, good news. Is this stream a CBS stream and available on the CBS player where all the CBS stations are? I hope the sound is good. Don't know what you are using for soundprocessing for the current broadcasts?

Freeform BCN has made me happy I got the Sony XDR-10iP. Great music.Hope it gets on a HD2 soonMaybe CBS will replace 80s music on BMX HD2 with Free form BCN.

I don't know if they will do that because the '80s channel is more complementary to the main 104.1 HD-1 "Mix" format than FreeForm would be.

FreeForm 'BCN is (somewhat) more complementary to Classic Rock on the main WZLX HD-1 than it is to WBMX HD-1.

Mmm, end of the week but no streaming yet...:-(.

If and when it streams please someone let us know so that those of us on the fringes who don't live within a small area around the Pru can get it. It needs to be available to more than "just a small circle of friends" if it is to be successful.

Does a "small area around the Pru" include 30-35 miles away? Cuz it comes in fine here.

You get an HD-3 channel 30-35 miles away?

Yep. 1-2 and 3.

No problem with BCN on HD.

As mgpt6 said, HD-3 should come in as good as HD-1 & HD-2.....which I have no problem with.

HD is dead in the water. Time to move on.

Sam, I listen to your local show Fridays, and loved the sample mix you brought to the BCN finale. I don't even live in Boston anymore, but if Freeform BCN ever does go online and has live jocks, I will listen. If it's just automated or voice tracked, it ain't goin' anywhere. We have XM Deep Tracks, Radio Paradise, and Radio Free Phoenix for that. Good luck and do what you can.

Also a little request: be adventurous with the 90s and 00s material. If you go with Dave Matthews, Sheryl Crow, etc. it gets really borrrrriiiing. (as in The River or WXRT - snore.) We can take some slightly edgier stuff. You need to stand out from the AAA crowd to make a mark.

Hey, maybe you could hire Steve Jones. He did a show out here in LA where he played anything and everything, on a station called Indie 103. He was a local hero, until the station went Spanish. Anyway, he's unemployed now..... Hire him long distance, Charles long distance, Ken Shelton, and maybe put Peter Wolf or yourself on there. Then let the jocks play whatever moves them. I would listen to that!

HD is dead in the air too.

I hope to hear BCN online soon and scooty143's ideas are all good. The original WBCN was edgy. Incidentally I'm temporarily at my father's home and in my old room even. There are two WBCN bumper stickers stuck to the wallpaper forever.
One black one from the 70's like I used to have on my car, in fact I had one on every car I owned back then, had the BCN shirts too).
There is also one blue one, probably from the 80's.
My younger brothers stuck them there which shows how long BCN was around, it's still a shock to me. I have so many memories of BCN such as going to a far off concert (can't remember where) and someone walking up to us and saying he was the WAAF giraffe or something about it and asked us what station we listened to and we all said WBCN, he was disappointed, haha!
I got my first passport in 1977 which is long gone and had my yellow WBCN shirt on it: WBCN: Home of the Hots, remember that one? I'm surprised I remembered it myself
