From Super CFL

What is sad.... maybe because it also reminds us of our own mortality.... is how many of these people who were radio favorites of ours are gone now. In addition to John Ganas, Jim Frank died a few years ago, Howie Roberts & Red Motlow are gone. Walt Hamilton, Wanda Wells retired..... and on the DJ side from CFL there's Barney, Joel, Jim Runyon, Jim Stagg, Gary Gears, Paul Christy, Dick Sainte, Jerry Kay, Big Ron O'Brien & Art Roberts all dead and gone. Ron Britain, Tom Murphy, Gerry G. Bishop, Doug Dahlgren & Larry O'Brien retired. I think the only ones still active are Clark Weber, Larry Lujack, Bob Dearborn (a news blurb about him started this thread), Johnny Driscoll.... and the Everyready Bunny who's still plugging away on WLS-FM every night. Just seeing all their names again brings back a lot of great memories.

Sure beats the alternative.

Btw, I meant Energizer Bunny in my previous post referring to Mr. Biondi.

We were lucky to have all these great radio people from that era as a presence in our homes and lives every day. I loved all these guys, got to meet many of them at Marina City when you could go up and watch them do their thing. Other kids my age had Ernie Banks, Ron Santo & Billy Williams. I had The Men From 10.

Dick Biondi is truly amazing. He has every bit as much enthusiasm for what he does as he did over 40 years ago.

In answer to an earlier question, there is no 45 rpm of Barney singing "Let It All Hang Out". Anytime it is played on the air it is played from an aircheck. Barney did it by using a looped track of the instrumental part of the Hombres hit.

I believe he did that with some other records in that he would run a loop extending the ending of the song.

I 'm also interested in wcfl before it went top 40. Very large studios in
the Furniture Mart, across from WBBM (near McClurg Ct.)

They were 24 hours (a big deal, then)
The Voice of Labor.
Dan Sorkin was hilarious in the morning. (btw he is still living)
Howie Roberts did news
Red Rush did sports.
They broadcast the White Sox.

JOSH BRADY was another dj there (not sure what shift).

Sid McCoy did a jazz show overnight.

They had jingles. One said "Dial a thousand"
I wish I could remember other dj's from CFL from that era.

Any other old guys around here to help me?

Dan Sorkin is alive and well and living in the San Francisco bay area. After he left Chicago in the mid 60s he went on to have over a 30 year career on stations in the bay area. He still flies his own airplane.

Has anyone driven by the tranmitter site in Downers Grove recently and can tell us if the WCFL calls are still on the building? BIG Ten was a CFL of a station!

I'm pretty sure the whole array is new.

It's definitely new. When I was there, we had three square-based self-supporting Blaw-Knox towers resting on glass insulators. Boy were those things dangerous when they got cracks in them!

Later on Joel Sebastian closed his show with Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
