Losing Russ and Dee probably did make matters worse to some extent, but for Russ to take the entire credit for The Source's demise is rather ridiculous. Russ and Dee probably helped the station, ratings-wise, somewhat but they didn't keep it afloat. It's not like the situation when "Y-94.5" collapsed after Rick and Bubba left.

firing me was the death knell.

Hahahahahahahhahhahha - that station was dead for a while, no sales, no sales staff, no corporate support, no leadership.

moral of the story - never fire me.
 
Maybe the demise of 101.1 was the firing of the Attack Machine... it seemed like they were struggling to get a morning show... Lee Davis is good... but not for a morning show... sometimes he didnt have the "Get up and go" if you know what I mean. I liked listening to him during the middle of the day...

Back when ATM was on in the morning to get ya going... then Burt and Kurt to make ya laugh because work was throwing crap balls at ya... Lee Davis soothed the work and made you calm... and then finally Matt Murphy fired ya up before you left work...

That was a good line up.
 
Firing Russ and Dee wasn't a mistake due to their declining revenue...firing them without having a quality morning show waiting to take their place was a mistake. The station never recovered from letting the "B" team take over mornings, sorry but Lee Davis should stick to being a side kick. The Attack Machine was the wrong show for the station...they didn't match the listeners that the station had before and I think that behind the scenes Dale will admit it wasn't a good fit. The Attack Machine was a round cog in a square hole...the wheels were spinning and could never get traction or support. (But they did undoubtedly pick up some loyal followers.)
Crawford was at the point where something had to change and Burt and Kurt were able to convince Don Crawford to do something that Dave Mack couldn't do 3 years ago...go oldies but for some reason call it AC...which it probably was AC back when Burt and Kurt did this format the first time on Magic 96 in the 80's.
Dale, I guess you could say the 1980's have arrived in Birmingham...it will be like a flash back for most people, yes that new TV show ALF I am sure will be the subject many times on the Burt and Kurt show next Monday.
Other great TV shows that will be interesting to hear about once again...Bosom Buddies, Cheers, The Cosby Show, Diff'rent Strokes, The Dukes of Hazzard, Facts Of Life, Family Ties, The Golden Girls, Growing Pains, Head of the Class, Hill Street Blues, Knots Landing, The Love Boat, MacGyver, Miami Vice, Mork & Mindy, Mr. Belvedere, My Two Dads, Night Court, Perfect Strangers, Silver Spoons, St. Elsewhere, Webster, Who's the Boss, WKRP In Cincinnati (They will really like that one), and The Wonder Years.
Of course news and Burt and Kurt have became synomous, so here are the news stories that the FUN 101.1 News Department is putting together to air over the next year...An Actor becomes President, Mt. St.Helens erupts, The Pope is shot, Prince Charles marries Diana, LA Host the Olympics, Chernobyl, US bombs Libya, Challenger Explosion, Bill Gates makes his first billion, The Berlin Wall comes down, Tianamen Square. The news department is busy at work!
What a great format and station! Can't wait to rehear it!

Since most of the talk programming from "The Source" is moving to 850 and 92.5, I wonder if the christian programming that's currently on 850 might be moved to 1260. I went into the "legends 1260" website this morning to see if anything had changed since the site was dismantled a few days ago. There's no longer the Fun 101 logo, but instead has the WXJC site framed in it.

You all need to remember Crawford (the man, the myth, the legend that has created the feared "Mr. Crawford") does not, will not and can not think ahead. Anything and everything could still happen to 1260, 850 and 92.5, they are all very much in play.

Christian and Political talk on the same station sounds idiotic right? If so, bet on it.

never mind...the "Legends 1260" website has reverted back to showing the "Fun 101.1" logo again.
Do the folks at Crawford even know themselves what's going to wind up on all their stations after everything is said and done?? ???

Didn't Crawford try that before on 850 right after they bought the station and dropped the Radio Disney programming? -
Christian programming in the morning, with talk in the afternoon and the rest of the day?

When the WYDE call letters returned to Birmingham in '99, the station started out as "Life Talk 850". Basically, it was an (ostensibly) Christian-centered talk station. The talk always veered towards politically conservative talk. And...the irony was never lost on me that a "Christian" talk station featured non-Christians as their morning drive hosts.

BTW---if you don't count the brief period ('98-'99) when the WYDE call letters were vacated, the only call letters that have been in Birmingham longer than those are WBRC, WAPI and WJLD, unless WATV took their current call letters before WYDE. I can't remember whose came first.
 
i think watv came into existance when ag gaston fired the white station manager at wennin the 70's and the staff bolted and bought 1220 (then waqy) and rechristened it watv.

wyde was on air in the fifties (i think) and sixties already because i heard my first beatle record on wyde in 64 before they became "countrypolitan wyde".

WAQY was never connected with WATV ...... WAQY was at 1220, and those calls came into being in 1964 when car dealer Tom Gloor went into partnership with Tommy Charles and Doug Layton to buy the station. It was previously known as WEZB.

WATV started out as WLBS in (I believe) the late '40s - or maybe early '50s. Early history of AM 900 is sketchy at best. Calls changed to WATV by 1960, and spun the format wheel numerous times in that decade. Frankly, I'm amazed they were able to pay the light bill! WATV didn't hit paydirt until Gaston fired WENN GM Joe Lackey. Entire airstaff walked out with him. Lackey was then approached by WATV .... at the time doing a quasi-talk format. Studios were in the Cabana Hotel (a/k/a Hotel Thomas Jefferson). Lackey took the station urban, and all of the former WENN jocks went to work at WATV. They didn't buy the station - Lackey just managed it, as he did WENN. However, one of those jocks (Shelly "The Playboy" Stewart) would later purchase WATV.

As for WYDE, I'm not sure if those calls came before WATV. As of February 1957, 900 was still listed as WLBS and 850 was still WILD. But both had their now-legendary call letters by 1960.

i was born in 56 but did remember that wyde was my first beatle station. (i also remember waqy's tommy charles and doug layton doing the beatle boycot).

i love the history of media in alabama!

Looks as though AM 1260 is WYDE-AM again. The hourly ID at midnight was WYDE-FM, Cullman-Birmingham, WYDE, Birmingham.
