Hey oldtimers and creative types. What are some of the greatest contests you remember? I always loved the pregnant bikini contests.

When Star 100.7 had the roller coaster ride and ended up giving away more cars than planned. That would be '97 or '98.

Hey, remember when Star 100.7 had to find that lady a job because her boss fired her for being in that contest?

In San Diego it has to KCBQ'S "Last Contest" in 1972.

Realradiocom http://www.reelradio.com/ricky/lastcon.html writes, in part:

The Last Contest was the creation of KCBQ's Jack McCoy, who also credited a "Milwaukee newscaster named Doug Harmon" with helping him develop this biggest of all big radio contests. Listeners were presented with a mind-boggling number of "prize packages" from which to choose - and all they had to do was call the "secret phone number" to win. When the "secret phone number" was finally announced, a third of the San Diego telephone system was out of order for a half-hour. Parts of San Diego county along the coast were without phone service for 90 minutes.

I seem to recall that the phone company later set up certain exchanges just for use by radio stations, but of course no one ever came close to generating that kind of phone traffic.

Hey All!

Jammin' Z-90 in the early 90's. It was the 100th Anniversary of the ferris wheel and we (yours truly) re-did wedding vows for listeners that participated in a contest. It was held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We went up in the ferris wheel, mic in hand and did the whole "dearly beloved, blah, blah..." The couple on one seat and yours truly and a TV person on the other. Got lot's of TV time with that one. ;)

Salúd,

KCBQ also had a great promotion where they would dial a phone number at random and, if the person who answered picked up the phone and said, "I listen to fun lovin' KCBQ", they'd win big prizes.

It sure got San Diegans answering the phone in a whole different way.

"I Listen to fun Lovin' KCBQ" - if you answered the phone that way, you won $1,000.

At the time I worked at San Diego House of Honda and we were big Q advertisers, we had KCBQ on in the store at all times.

I lived with a three guys in La Mesa and we agreed to answer the phone that way. If we got called, we'd split the money three ways. About 10:30 in the morning the dj, with KCBQ blasting in the showroom, don't remember who, announced "we are placing a call to (whoever the phone was listed, don't remember that either) the home of ..." ring, ring, ring (answer it god damn it!) ..." Then I hear my roommate pick up the phone and say "Your dime, shoot ...." - DJ says "Sorry, you would have won $1000 if you would have answered ..."

Three bummed out guys that night, that's for sure.
