Funny bits on WWBA 820

It seems that Mike Reeves and JoJo Walker are doing some really funny bits on other stations in the market. Most notably about WQKY, which they call WKKK. I'm sure that Mike Cullata would have a fit if he heard them! Even some on 970 WFLA. Looks like the war is on and my the best bit win!
I don't know I think Cullata would laugh.......Come on Folks its the SOUTH! Besides it could be worse Cullata could start replaying Mike Pepper's old Show " The Show with No Name" on Saturday night! Actully I would like to here that on the air again.....Cause they had a kick ass producer....think his name was Butters!

Keep an ear out for the scan dial bits on Jack & Ted on 970/FLA. They are laugh out loud funny and so true. Don't get me wrong, we know and love Jack and Ted. We're just poking fun at them in the true spirit of real radio the way it should be done.

I'm no radio pro, but am a LONG time enthusiastic listener to AM radio talk- I think the bits poking fun at WFLA or other competitors might diminish credibility somewhat. I know it does with me, which makes me assume others may frown at it??? Trying to prop yourself up by ridiculing the other probably isn't the way to go. Be a pillar of the community, not an FM clone. You should rise above that, keep you and Reeves there. No need for the other 2, as nice as they may be-

Again, JB, a historical blind spot for someone with zip code 33707. Tampa talk radio, as well as Tampa radio in general, has a long history of competition-bashing. You do realize that the people who created Power Pig also ran 970 for the better part of two decades?

Bob Lassiter bashed 970 when he worked at 570, then bashed 570 when he crossed the street, then bashed 970 again when he worked at 620. And in at least a ratings sense, it worked -- 620 had risen to a virtual tie with 970 in 25-54 (actually beating them by a tenth of a point) when management pulled the plug because the Warm sales force didn't want to get its hands dirty selling it. Even Glenn Beck used to make fun of the Warm-Magic and other Cox overproduced formats in his early days on 970. (By that time, there was no more talk competition left to ridicule.)

Being a "pillar of the community" when you're an underdog is one way to ensure continued residence in fractional-share land in Tampa. There was once a talk station that encouraged listeners and advertisers to "CHOOSE RESPONSIBLE RADIO!" That station (WTKN) quickly failed...

So I guess I don't feel like I do. Here I was wrong about how I felt about it.

IT'S LOW CLASS TO INSULT THE COMPETITION . I don't care if OTHERS DO IT OR DID IT. It maked ME think they are desperate, which I know they are, therefore I'm much less inclined to listen. Don't tell me I'm wrong when that's the way I feel about it. Smedge you should be the most popular host in the world if you really were as smart on the subject as you like to portray- instead of just haning on MESSAGE BOARDS?

Well, I guess a strongly held opinion beats real life every time.

You are absolutely right -- that IS your opinion. The point is, enough OTHER people have responded to these approaches -- and continue to respond to them -- in the Tampa market to make competition-bashing a viable strategy. Not in every instance (although I'm hard-pressed to come up with a time when competition-bashing has FAILED in Tampa), nor for every format, but certainly for some. And that is based upon the success of people and stations who have done more on the air than either of us, actual verifiable events, not something cooked up in a hat. I suppose you think the Power Pig never happened and Q-105 was never dethroned?

Judging from history, Tampa loves competition-bashing on its radio stations. So maybe you think Tampa is a low class town.

And 820 IS desperate. They have nothing left to lose.

It's a shame, Smedge. There was a time that 820 to me was the cream of the crop. When it was Larsen, Boortz, Oreilly, Miller, Savcage, Rusty. It was just a great listening experience- I can't believe it wasn't viable for the station to continue with it. I guess FLA does rule, though I dont listen except for some Rush. The morning guys are barely adequate, Beck I can deal with some, but I listen to Boortz from WSB stream. Rush is fun . hannity is TOO partisan. I like him, but if the Repub party would come out with the world is flat or the world is warming, he would agree. I want to like WWBA because I still feel like its MY station, but they've dismantled it, although I guess they had to.

Taking shots at the other radio stations is a tradition in every market. Even Hudson and Landry took shots at 93/KHJ back in the 60's. It's nothing new and nothing personal, it's just fun and comedy. And as George Carlin said (God rest his soul) "Comedy is bad shit happening to other people". We love Jack and Tedd, we're friends and always have been. Bubba and MJ take shots at anything that moves and they seem to do quite well for this market. The Power Pig took shots at us at Q105 and won for one book. After that they fired us, and the next book 3 days after they fired us, we had beaten the Power Pig. It's all a matter of who blinks first. No one is dying and no one is putting the bad mouth on anyone's mother or family. It's just radio! Get over it and enjoy it while it's still live and local...or would you rather have Ryan (I can't adlib a fart) Seacrest or Elvis Durran on every station?

I wouldn't say that too loud...

LOL...Now that's funny! Shout it from the mountain tops to the valley below. Anyway that corp radio can cut cost to take away live and local on the cheap...they will. When is the last time you heard of anyone at the top corp being fired? Never, it's always the guys in the trenches, the back bone of radio. If they fired 4 or 5 guys in New York Corp offices, they could save thousands of radio people who have given their heart and soul for this business, and they would still make their bottom line. Radio is people...not bean counters in New York and Wall Street!

They call it "forced to leave". Randy Michaels comes to mind. Something about the use of his jet.
