No details but Fybush's NERW reports pirate Hot 97 at 87.7 was raided by the FCC and shut down this week. Quick web search shows same thing happened last June, with fans of the station wondering where it went, on their facebook

maybe this will show the (Professionals) to put a "Urban AC" on a Legit station, perhaps 97.7, if they don't or can't afford radio hosts, at least put "The Touch" From Cumulus Media Network on there, or (put Funkytown 93.7 HD2 -put it on 97.7) and have some weeknight "Keith Sweat Hotel" and weekend Urban AC syndicated shows, do something. You know?

This has been discussed umpteen million times already. If urban-AC was a viable format in the Boston market, it would already be on a licensed station. It isn't.

Oh...did I mention that radio is a business?

Marc Coleman used to be on 1090am as the host for "Time Tunnel" He was one of their best radio host.
He was recently on HOT 87.7

My question is, when stations like ? (Magic 106.7, or MIX 104.1) is hiring for Radio Host, why not HIRE the BEST such as Marc Coleman? If you are familuare with him, you would know how great he was, not only on the radio, but also in person!!.


On a side note. (Tuesday March 20, 2012) It seems like "Big City 101.3" is playing a lot of Hip Hop Music Mixes. They normally have a short Talk Show on around 8am weekdays. But thismorning, they seem like they are playing Mixes. They are another outlet for Caribbean Music. So, for those Caribbean listenners who recently listened to HOT 87.7, they might want to check out "BIG City 101.3", as well as "Choice 102.9", and 105.3

ago I would frequently use 100000watts.com but I don't subscribe to that because it's
really expensive. The cheapest is $99.95/yr to log in 3 x per day...$235/yr to log in 10 x per day

Some newspapers will charge you to surf their sites beyond the bare minimum/short articles.
(Others charge you nothing and make money on ads.)

The change took place last fall, and if you're just noticing it now, that suggests you probably weren't a regular reader of the column anyway...and that's fine. (It's been entirely paid-subscription since the middle of last November.)

For those who are regular readers, the change to a paid model has allowed me to keep writing "that stuff," now in its 19th year, rather than shutting down the column entirely, which was the only other real alternative.

btw the FCC is trying to get "space" for low power community radio stations including urban
areas...perhaps to serve the type of audience that Hot 97, Touch 106.1, and many others
are trying to serve with their pirate stations. The dial is already crowded as it is and
remember there are also many applications out there for translators (examples: the 103.7 somewhere areound Saugus //WSMA; the 101.5 in Rockport //WERS, etc.)[And it's tough
to even find a spot to do your own XM/Sir. sat. radio or mp3 player-through-your-car-radio...)

(Some "open spaces" have at least temporarily been filled by pirates of course)
The article above mentions that perhaps LPFM licenses might be "favored" since they serve
the local community.

(Perhaps, as in, NOT running some church from Idaho. Local content...wow.)
There are some LPFMs out there like The Radiator** in Burlington VT that almost seem like
college stations, with various music, public affairs, etc.

You could almost imagine such a station in Boston that would have specialty shows, etc.
Instead of having an illegal station pumping out dancehall music, you could have a show
dedicated to it. If the local Iglesia de Dios wants Spanish language religion, they can have
a show on such a station (WMWM does this kind of thing...or go to one of the legit
AM stations around--in places like Lynn, Quincy, Waltham, Newton). A legal, LPFM station to
serve a community, not a pirate. Obviously people out there are rarin' to go on the air
and we go back to We Don't Need No Stinkin' License. But the FCC is needed to keep
stations from stepping on each other in the few spots left.

Glad an illegal station got popped but I will give my honest opinion on their formatics...it reminded me of many small market stations I heard working my way up the radio food chain. The music did a good job of catering to the audience much like Hot 107.1 in Memphis. I thought the jocks, when I heard them, were serviceable. I loved that all of the music was radio friendly but hated how often they played imaging. I would be jammin' to a song in my jeep with top off then BLAM...loud imaging, over and over and over. Is it wrong that I want to hear two minutes of a song? It felt like they would drop that sweeper with the sirens about every thirty seconds. As for it serving the community, I never really heard it, sure they ran commercials for club nights and comedy shows but for a station so many say "was serving the needs", it didn't come across when I listened.

Shame. Stations should take a look at stations like this, it's a good way to be succesful. Standing out, and having airstaff that people enjoy over say the competitor.

The only way you are going to hear an urban ac in Boston is if somebody with deep pockets and a passion for the music wills it to work. Just like Mr. Nash did for Wild and the gentleman who owns wfnx is doing now. Unfortunately those type of broadcasters are exceedingly rare these days.

I agree .Most Companies whom put ads on Hot 97 got near or Sold out shows ( The Wilbur Theatre, Patriots Place Concerts and Night clubs ) . My Proof is I went to alot of Hot 97 shows ( TheWilbur and Nightclubs )and I was a hot 97 listener .
