Fybush: Howie is WRKO's biggest draw

Scott Fybush in North East Radio Watch notes that Howie's departure could be a big disaster for WRKO/Entercom, "since his show represented the biggest revenue draw on the talk station's schedule" (and also was a big money maker in syndication). Here they were spending megabucks to keep the Sox/move (most)
games to WRKO, and what do they do? Hire Finneran and (most likely) lose their biggest breadwinner.
While they'll get half-decent ratings with the Sox, they'll most likely lose big ad dollars with Howie leaving.
Some here are not big fans of Howie, but the fact is that he is crucial to WRKO's success or failure.

Hahahaha...'The Music of YOUR Life. I love it!

Also known as the radio equivalent of a TV test pattern! Hahahahaha! What a bunch of Morons at WRKO for hiring a convicted FELON for morning drive (who, BY THE WAY, had NO experience in radio and was immediately rejected by their real bread-winner at the other end of the day). Those two at Entercom are a couple Humpty Dumpty's.

Well allegedly the Felon had a few hours of experience on talk radio (at WBZ and WRKO, fill in work)...so they figured, good enough. Unless there's an amazing situation where Howie winds up back at WRKO (very
unlikely), it's likely that Jason & Julie killed 'RKO as a talker.

Julie "The Executioner" Kahn and her "Mini-me" Jason killed another one. Only this time the grave they dug will bury them as well.

I've never heard of a station which switched formats just because a name talent left in a contract dispute. I'm sure you have, and can name them. Please do.

And, just wondering, but why do you think that WRKO would change formats rather than just try to replace Carr?

Please be specific. I don't think that 'because Brian" or "because Fybush" or 'because anyone' says so is going to be specific enough.

Thanks in advance.

you make as much sense as a bc co-ed at maryann's on a friday nite. if he was so crucial why didn't they offer him a new contract months ago?! they were quite content of letting him work without a contract and then cut him loose when something better came along. that's what they did with sarandis. he wasn't wanted and wasn't getting a new deal.
they just didn't see him ending up on severino's frequency. too bad las vegas didn't offer a line on howie's next place of employment. fat scotto blogo wouldn't ever need to work again. life goes on. maybe wrko will finally be able to get rid of all those old age home patients in their demos and "680" won't have to stand for the avg. age of their listeners.

Well, actually a number of stations did switch formats after Howard Stern went over to Sirius. This may be the small-scale equivalent. At least for WRKO, which has been miserably mismanaged over the past 18 months. They really have few revenue draws left, after the Sox. There are the syndicated offerings of Rush, Savage and C to C am and that's about it. No better than a 500 watt pea-shooter in Iowa!

I truly hope that the brainless wonders over at Entercom (Jason and Julie) find themselves looking for work at the golden arches really soon. They deserve it for effectively (and single handedly) destroying a once great radio station.

Well, I was wondering which ones, and nobody seems to know.

Of course, Stern was usually breaking format, not part of it, because I think few stations had, or could afford, FCC fine-wise, an all-shock-jock format. Most Stern stations were targeted at the younger adult male demos, so I guess we'd be looking for a station that went to oldies or a 'Magic' type format after losing Stern.

Over the last 18 months, WRKO has let go Scotto and DePietro, and I don't think anyone thought they were 'revenue' draws. Luckily for them, if they do, in fact, lose Carr, they aren't prohibited from finding a replacement while the Sox pay the bills, and staying a talk station. Only the usual Kool Aid drinkers actually seriously think losing Carr is a format killer.

Losing Stern certainly made a large (huge) dent in WBCN's checkbook, but somehow they still managed to bill more than 18 million, which is better than almost all of the stations in town, and twice what WRKO and WTKK were billing when all the talent (like Imus) was still
in place.

As I opined, no station seems to be demonstrably dependent on one talent to stay viable in a format.

Yes, life is like a cantaloupe in a field of tuna fish, so it's no wonder so many folks want to go out into the moonlight and kick a one-legged jackel. When given the choice between buying a bong and taking an E2L course, choose wisely.
