Gambling to 970

If he does go to 10-noon as reported elsewhere, he will kick Geraldo's butt. John Gambling 10-noon on WABC was an excellent listen IMHO. A lot of that show was done from Fla and it still sounded great. Perhaps Bloomy will come back weekly and criticize the new administration.

So from 10 to noon there may soon be three decent talk shows competing with each other while from 6 am to 10 am there's nothing listenable on the air in the #1 market. That's ironic.

But if Gambling kicks Geraldo's butt on 970's signal, who cares? if a tree falls in the forest ...

A couple of other thoughts ...

For John, going from getting up at 3 am, driving from Long Island to Manhattan, doing a 4 hour morning show, then schmoozing with clients afterwards to a 2 hour 10 to noon shift from his home in Florida will be virtual retirement. I'm glad for him. He can stay relevant and involved but have a normal life too.

Someone elsewhere said he'll bring his old advertisers over to WNYM. Maybe. It's not morning drive and the signal is terrible. Also the fear of NOT advertising on the morning Gambling show has passed. Now it's a new buy vs. a renewal.

I hope Salem syndicates Gambling's show. I'm sure there are plenty of ex New Yorkers around the country who will tune in.

If Gambling was screwed by clear channel -- nobody should be surprised.
John belongs on 710, 770, or 1130-----not on 970. But if he want to be on
in NYC he may have to be on 970.

How about John Gambling am---drive on 570---WMCA ? it has a better signal than 970.

I guess WMCA would not air John Gambling in morning drive. Salem sells
WMCA air time to preachers.
How sad what has happened to WMCA, WFIL, 970 & 990. (NYC & Philly . )
This is likely the future of AM radio. Plus, ethnic programming like on WPAT--930.

Unless Gambling really wants to work or needs $$$$----- it seems demeaning for
him to go to AM 970. The station is a joke with a bad NYC signal.
how much lower can Phil Boyce go.? to AM 620 next ?

I've always thought Salem should filp 970-WNYM with 570-WMCA.

- WMCA has a rich heritage as a talk station and listeners remember. Bringing back Talk Radio WMCA would be an exciting development for the legacy value alone.

- WMCA covers the tri-state area which is important for competing with WABC and WOR for advertisers.

- The padres could be moved to 970 -- where else are they gonna go? I'll bet Salem could cut their rate by 25% and still bill a higher CPM than before.

- I'll bet most fans of the preachers would follow them to the Internet. How much of their audience do you suppose depends on listening in the car? Much more at home would be my guess. Talk radio, on the other hand, is highly dependent on getting the signal into automobiles.

Salem airs preachers on the BIG signals of WMCA & WFIL.
And airs news-- talk on the inferior signals of WNYM & WNTP.
Must mean they are making more $$$ sellling air time to preachers
than they are airing news--talk.

Maybe the next move for Phil Boyce wiill be to WOR as PD ?

I'm sure Salem makes more money with their preachers than their talk shows. I would love to see WMCA and WFIL go talk. Big signals that very few people listen to. WMCA had great success as a talk station through the 70's and 80's. Once Salem bought it in 1989 it's been preachers and Christian teaching. I would love to see WMCA go back to talk, but I don't see it happening.

John Gambling would be a good move for WNYM. 9 to 11 or 11 to 1. He would probably bring in a built in audience and advertisers. However their signal.while 50,000 watts during the day is challenged at night and early in the morning. Their ratings have always been non existent. Both WMCA and WNYM don't subscribe. to Arbitron/

it was a disgrace when WOR let Gambling go years ago & he went to late mornings on WABC.
Gambling belongs in am---drive on WOR or another NYC station. And not on 970----with its poor signal.

Oh how jaded be the radio fans of New York. Naturally Salem Communications needs to make a profit. But consider the curricula vitae of its founders/managers before you stop there!

Two are directors of the Association of Religous Broadcasters, two others are associated with Christian schools. These are people wityh commitmernts on several levels. Agree with them or not, give them credit for living their values. The reason their stations feature religous broadcasters is because they feel religion needs a voice - Cumulus, Infinity and CC aren't likely to supply it.

NY Post seems to think John Gambling is going to WNYM----970 mid-days soon.
maybe WNYM could move John to am---drive later .

David Hinckley at the Daily News is reporting Gambling will be doinv 11AM to 1PM on WNYM starting April 14. He is well known, has a built in audience and advertisers.but will people follow him to 970? Curtis Sliwa spent four years there and basically fell off the radar.

The new line up on WNYM will be half local, half Salem syndication. Gambling, who was heard on WABC as well as WOR will be sandwiched in between two other former WABC hosts. Mike Gallagher and Dennis Prager. Piscopo is local in AM drive and they have a local show from 5 to 7PM.

From 11 to Noon weekdays there will be three local choices..Mark Simone on WOR, Geraldo Rivera on WABC and soon John Gambling on 970. At least we have choices, unlike PM drive from 3 to 5PM where syndication rules: Hannity,Savage and Michael Medved.

Joe Walsh on WNYM 5pm---7pm is not really local . He does his show from WIND- radio Chicago.
he's another windbag who tries too hard to copy Rush. There are so many guys doing that. It's pathetic.

John Gambling Coming Back ??

I was a huge fan of John Gambling and his morning show for many years but I am shocked learned of his broadcasting on "970 THE ANSWER" . I think this is a response to "Curtis Sliwa" leaving for Curtis and Kuby on WABC. The 970 Answer is trying to draw listeners for one hour of each shows: Geraldo, Simone, Curtis and Kuby and Rush. I hope 970 gets a stronger signal since the station is interesting. Otherwise, John Gambling's broadcast will be filled with the static and buzzing we expect from 970.

Later this year---- WNYM should move Gambling to am---drive.

Piscopo is not good.

Piscopo is worse than not good.

I suspect John Gambling isn't interested in getting up in the middle of the night anymore -- who could blame him. I won't hear much of his show during the mid-day hours so I hope they'll run some "best of's" on the weekends.
