Today, Mon. Jan 14, is Detroit (& Providence) radio legend Gary Berkowitz' birthday! Big up to you!

Gary Berkowitz has ruined more stations than he has been successful at. But, happy birthday anyway.

Any relation to Cliff Berkowitz, founder of KHUM in Humboldt County and former consultant?

The last unherald Berkowitz project was WOMC. Continued to make it a AC of oldies and failed with poor and overpriced talent. dan Mason CEO of CBS Radio came in and made WOMC a top 40's oldies station that Berkowitz couldn't create or execute.

Sounds like sour grapes.

Time to put up or zip it.

Name the stations that Gary Berko has "ruined".

You wouldn't ask that question if you worked at one of his stations. It's read the liner card and shut up. Absolute boring radio. No grapes, just fact.

What makes you think I don't?

What facts? So far only one example...WOMC.

WOMC is now up to a 4.5...and still one of Berko's clients!

K-104.7 Charlotte is another really boring Berkowitz wonder. But hey if you think reading liner cards and doing a weather forecast is great radio by all means go for it!

It's too bad that "talents" like yours go unrecognized in this business...if only Gary would "listen" to you,he might have been successful. Instead he will have to eke out a living with his few meager clients while YOU possess the secret to great radio.
Tool!

Mix 100 in Saginaw was a complete disaster as a Berkowitz-consulted Hot AC.

WFAT in K'zoo saw a ratings slump after dumping Rock AC for a Berkowitz-consulted Mainstream AC format a number of years ago. Mainstream AC didn't last long there.

Me thinks I struck a nerve! If I insulted you I'm sorry. I'll bet you read a very good weather forecast. As for me I'm out of radio.

No one would deny he's been successful in a few markets but then reality shows get numbers too. I don't think many would call it great television.

Supposedly he consults 92.5 in Fort Myers, FL, which is now oldies. And, I am told he set (or specified) the settings for their Optimod. If that is true, he needs to have his hearing checked ASAP. Decent music mix, etc., but the processing is painful! They won't have too many females with a sound like that.

Talk about striking a nerve!

Couldn't make it in the biz, and now with a mouth full of sour grapes you lash out on anonymous message boards, huh?

Nothing anonomyous here from me. Check the name, I'm not hiding.

Actually I did well, worked for some great radio stations and had a great time doing it. Am I the best jock in the world? Nope far from it. You really don't have to be to read Gary's liner cards. I have no regrets about leaving radio and making more moneydoing something else. I left on my own terms.

Fact: consultants ultimately control very little of what their stations actually implement. You can draw a game plan that is the pinnacle of logic and serves a great need, but if it isn't put into action with professionalism, good humor and enthusiasm by the local staff, it won't work. Gary's had some very good ones and some bad ones...just like every other decent consultant out there. One guy can only do so much.

Personally, I find it very painful to listen to a Berkowitz consulted station in recent years because of how much fun his stations (stations he programmed) sounded in the 70's and 80's. PRO-FM Providence, WROR Boston, and WHYT Detroit all had upbeat personalities, tons of jingles, and great audio with stereo reverb.

I know, I know. Times have changed, and listeners want bland liner card radio, so Berkowitz is giving the people what they want. :p

Uh, wrong. WOMC dumped Berkowitz back in September.

I was just told by someone who works there he is still on retainer...
