Gary Lycan Dies

Very sorry to read this. I also see George Wilson has died today.

Oh, man......

Not only did I read his work, but I dealt with him for a couple of years when I was programming an independent TV station and he was producing and syndicating the Ivonna Cadaver late-night horror movie.

Really sad to hear this.

Rest in Peace. From what I've read about him, he was a very nice man and I liked reading his columns. I sure hope we get to a point where we can cure cancer. It would be the greatest gift to humanity.

Rest In Peace Gary!I spoke to him about ten years ago.He was easy to talk with.My old friend,Ed Ford told me so much about him.He was a very nice person.I will never forget about him.

After Don Barrett ended his daily LARadio.com columns, to which I contributed the daily "Rewind" feature (music trivia, radio history, celebrity birthday bios) for nine years, Gary asked me if I'd like to contribute to his weekly column on the Orange County Register website. What he wanted was a single radio history item for each date of the upcoming week. I was glad to contribute a new "Rewind" feature. On March 30 Gary e-mailed me to apologize for not doing a column for two weeks. He didn't mention any health problems but he assured me that the columns would start appearing again.

They didn't.

And now they won't.

Gary Lycan will be missed.

RIP Gary
I started reading Gary's columns before I even heard of Don Barrett and before I ever had an Internet connection. I will greatly miss Gary's columns. They were the very first thing I looked for every Sunday morning.

I remember reading Gary's columns in the paper every Sunday morning when I was a kid. He got me interested in the radio and telecommunications industry. I would write back and forth with him a few times back in the day. He was a good man who was very passionate about the industry.

I will truly miss him.

On his LARadio.com website, Don Barrett today wrote that in the past year he had offered to ghost-write Gary's column, or at least help him, while Gary battled cancer. Gary insisted on writing the column by himself, just as he had done for approximately 2000 columns prior. I can't think of any other writer with that much dedication. Don also reported that Gary had requested that there be no memorial service. Gary will be buried at sea.

I miss Gary not only for his radio coverage, but great heart. Others may not know that Gary Lycan was a great supporter of animal welfare, too, helping many animal advocacy organizations. Dear man, taken too soon.

There will be a Gary Lycan Memorial Celebration this Friday morning, 4/19/13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Hoiles Hall at the OC Register, 625 N. Grand Ave., Santa Ana, CA 92701

Per tweet from Don Barrett:

"Don Barrett named new radio columnist for the Orange County Register. He fills slot Gary Lycan had for 35 years. New column begins Saturday."

No one better to take over for Lycan.

The LA area has had two good radio columnists: Don Page and Gary Lycan. Now there are three...Congrats to Mr Barrett!

The Register's announcement of Don Barrett's hiring is on the newspaper's blog at http://insideocr.ocregister.com/

Now for the bad news: Don's column---indeed, all of the Register's original content---is now available only to subscribers or those who pay on an "à la carte" basis.
