The Register's announcement of Don Barrett's hiring is on the newspaper's blog at http://insideocr.ocregister.com/

Now for the bad news: Don's column---indeed, all of the Register's original content---is now available only to subscribers or those who pay on an "à la carte" basis.

yeah I know...they started that a couple of weeks ago :(

Newspapers always charged for their content, and if they're going to survive they have to replicate that in the digital world, or they're done.

$7 per Week, or $2 per day. No thanks! I'll get my Radio Info here!

More and more newspapers are adopting a pay to read policy. If they didn't they would die, it is an inconvenience for us who liked reading out of town news on line for free. But it is a necessary evil, what I would like is for somebody to come up with a service to let you "subscribe" to several papers of your choosing at some reasonable set fee for occasional access to the selected publications. I'd pay and be happy to do so because individual subscriptions to the 50 or so papers I occasionally peruse would be beyond my means. But I don't go them all every day, that list is more like 4 or 5.

I'm going to share one of my favorite websites. Actually I was going to make everybody here pay me $2 first...but I'll be nice and forgo the fee. The front pages of more than 800 newspapers worldwide are featured each day on Today's Front Pages. For news junkies such as myself, this is an excellent site:

The other member of the "Radio Writers Triumvirate" (Barrett, Lycan & Wagoner) devoted part of his May 3 column to Don Barrett replacing Gary Lycan at the Register. Richard Wagoner's column appears every Friday in the Daily Breeze and the Daily News. Wagoner wrote that Barrett got a phone call on a Friday and was asked to submit a sample column; on Monday, he was told that he got the job. "I can't think of a better replacement," Wagoner wrote. "Like Lycan, Barrett loves radio and it shows in his writing."

OC Register, while having added many columnists, has a flawed pay model. $7/week for print/online, the works. If you are out of their delivery area, who wants to pay $7 for online only? I am presently paying for NY Times $5/week and Boston Globe $3.99/week, as those prices are more appropriate for online access only. I am grandfathered into a very inexpensive price for LA Times and I hope that goes on forever.

I think the Times is ripping you off as their site offers one month for $15?. I can think of many great Newspapers, and the O.C. Register just doesn't come to mind? While Don is excellent , how much local Radio News is there anymore? Funny how the Miami Herald sent a servant to my door 7 days a week, brought a giant costly newspaper, and charged 85 cents a Week?
