Gen-X Format

I have been out of town the last couple of weeks on business in Columbus, Ohio. While traveling through Louisville, KY on my way to and from Columbus, I had the misfortune of FINALLY hearing the Gen-X station that several posters on this board keep suggesting that either Jack-FM or 97.1 WRQQ switch to. Let me tell you, I WAS NOT IMPRESSED with the Gen-X Format. It sounds like a MUCH WIMPIER VERSION of Jack FM. I listened for about 30 minutes or so before I had to turn it off. In that 30 minutes, I heard one song that I actually cared for, with the other songs being mainly '90's FLUFF by artists such as the Cranberries, Savage Garden and other light weight pop hits that you can still hear on Mix 92.9 on a daily basis.

For the posters that keep asking for the Gen-X format in Nashville, I have one question for you. Have you even heard the Gen-X on the air anywhere? Or is it just some new "HOT" format that you've read about in trade publications?

We have a new Gen X formatted station in Memphis, 98.9 and I agree with you 100%.

Listen for one day and you will hear every song they play, although it was fun to listen the first couple of days.

Lots of what some call "oh wow, oh no" songs.

The first time I heard Funky Cold Medina by Tone Loc, it was "oh wow, I haven't heard that song in 20 years." Heard it again the next day and it was "oh no" and I quickly turned the dial.

I would imagine "Livin' La Vida Loca," "Ice Ice Baby" and "Macarena" would also be on that list...

And it's all about you, right? Like anything else, some people like Gen X Radio; others don't. Remember, you can be successful in radio if 95% of the population doesn't like you.

It doesn't matter what anyone here thinks of it. What matters is how much money it makes. I understand billing in Louisville is up substantially from what it was as Louie FM. The proper questions of the Gen-X format have to do with whether or not the format has legs and whether or not it will be sustainable in PPM. At this point, neither of those questions have been answered. Entercom is doing an all-90's format in Sacramento that isn't doing well at all, and they just started doing a "Gen-X Radio" format on 99.7 KKSN in Kansas City, which hasn't been around long enough to know what's happening.

Really? A "much wimpier version of Jack FM?"

How much Snoop or Incubus does Jack FM play?

Sounds like you didn't send a whole lot of time listening.

I didn't HEAR ANY SNOOP OR INCUBUS on Gen-X RADIO, either.

And if YOU ACTUALLY TOOK THE TIME AND EFFORT TO READ MY MY POST, you would have noticed that I said as I was passing through Louisville on my way to Ohio and that I olny LISTENED for about 30 to 45 MINUTES!!!!

I have, I read it. But I'm a thousand miles away listening: it's called STREAMING.
If I hear a radio station as I'm passing through a town and I don't hear anything I like on SAID station, I don't BOTHER STREAMING SAID STATION when I get back to my home base. THAT'S CALLED NOT WASTING YOUR TIME ON A USELESS FORMAT!!!!

The biggest issue listeners have here in Louisville with Gen-X is that it's not unusual to hear some songs 2-3 times in one day. I hear "Baby Got Back" about 10x a week myself on 100.5, which means that's 10 times I'm changing the station away from 100.5.

Based on my social circle (~300 people) here in Louisville, it appears WLGX is scoring big with 20-somethings and 30-somethings.
