Gen-X

So what is the deal with this station? I live out of the market now and wonder what CC may do to this station. Is it's ratings failure more of a signal problem or just simply lousy programming or what?

Will they flip this format or will it remain? What is a possible niche? Could soft AC be an option for this? It kinda makes sence to me.

Didn't you all talk about 93.3 being a wasted signal when the were soft rock 93.3? Maybe they ought to try a rythmic AC format like they have in Detroit. A few classic dance tune mixed in with todays.

Would love it.

WTVN's daytime coverage is good but at night they go north. If they wanted to put WTVN on an fm frequency they would probably want to put it on a signal that would fill all the areas tthe am won't fill at night. With 106.7 being northeast of Columbus you'd still have issues south of town. I still think rythmic ac would be good format since we really don't have anything like it here.

Can you say WTVN-FM?

Since Bob Conners is now retiring, I think we will be hearing WTVN-FM on the air within the next year or so. But who know which frequency WTVN-FM will land on. That really is now really the 64 dollar question.

Does Conners retiring correlate with changing from AM to FM?

It's no longer about just filling in gaps of nighttime coverage.... it's also about introducing their product to those who never venture beyond the FM dial. Witness CC flipping a class A FM in Albany to simulcast 50kw non-directional blowtorch WGY or CBS simulcasting such similar AM powerhouses such as WBBM and KCBS on FM.

CC has all but ruined Gen X for me the last couple weeks. I wouldn't have a problem if they flipped it to a 610 simulcast. And I still don't know where these signal complaints come from. I hear Gen X very well anywhere I go within at least 55 miles of Columbus and have no problems listening here in Thornville.

The signal is more prone to problems within a 5-mile radius of downtown than it is many miles away.  If they did switch to a TVN simulcast maybe going mono would help alleviate that.

I don't personally care much for the current approach either, but with the possibility of WWCD going away this might not be the most logical time for them to dump music.

The Chicago FM simulcast was WBBM-AM's direct response to Randy Michaels' Merlin Media snagging the market's Alternative (WKQX) and flipping it to all-news. Of course BBM-AM might have started an FM simulcast at some point, anyway.

If WWCD goes bye bye I see Gen-X shifting towards a more 'alternative' approach ... now only if Clear channel could bring back "Channel Z" (hah wishful thinking) :)

Noticed on multiple occasions this weekend they were just calling themselves "106 Seven" with no mention of "Gen X"... Not every bump, but fairly frequently.

I definitely think the whole WWCD saga will dictate where they go with this frequency.
Wouldn't shock me if they just reintroduced the "radio" brand again as its original Philly counterpart, WRFF 1045, does quite well.
I suppose if they wanted to irritate people, they could brand it CD106.7, just like Mix 107.9 appeared almost immediately after Mix 971's flip. Probably wouldn't be the best PR move... :)

And of course, there's those nostalgic for a "Channel Z" but yea...

SIDENOTE: Found a cassette recording earlier this year from probably 1999 or early 2000 when Z was on 105.7. Here's what it had:
Hole - "Celebrity Skin", Jars of Clay - "Flood", Citizen King - "Better Days", Collective Soul - "Run", Limp Bizkit - "Re-Arranged", and Fiona Apple - "Fast as you Can"

Kind of an interesting mixture there. I seem to recall them almost being a Rock40 by the end. They were mostly playing the pop-punk (Lit, Blink, etc), NuMetal (Korn, Limp, etc) pop-rock (Stroke 9, Splender), SoCal (OPM, Len), Lilith (Fiona, Tori Amos), Canadian (Econoline Crush, OLP), and some gold from earlier in the decade. It's hard to remember a time when 'alternative' was mostly current tracks.

Yesterday Gen-X's Facebook page asked, "Your top 3 favorite bands! Ready. Set. Go!."

While obviously highly-unscientific the 20+ answers sure wouldn't do anything to help the station set a direction.  If anything it looks more like good news for Jack-FM, or maybe an AAA (though maybe people don't want to hear all their favorites on one station).

First, I was surprised at the amount of classic rock, which was all three bands for some people.  Secondly many selected three bands that cut a wide swath across styles and eras, sometimes from the 60s or 70s all the way to current.
