Gene Hackman, 95, and wife Betsy Arakawa, 63,

Hackman was one of the All Time great actors. His versatility in different roles was remarkable. "The Conversation" was a brilliant film in which he played a conflicted surveillance expert. "French Connection" was another high point of his long career. "Poseidon Adventure" and "Superman" were some other films that benefited greatly from his presence. RIP...

His wife was substantially younger than he was so I'm guessing it was not natural causes. Carbon monoxide is what it sounds like. Very sad. He had so many great performances over the years.
Considering the dog died too that’s my thought as well.

I’m the the producers are scrambling to reconfigure the Oscar telecast this Sunday.

Seems very unlikely as the dog was also found dead.
Carbon Monoxide poisoning is unfortunately common. No need for speculation at this point.

Hopefully, the Oscar telecast will give Hackman a worthy tribute...
More info is coming out. 1 of the 3 dogs died. The other two were fine. They ruled out any gas issues.

I’m going to speculate that tbolt was wrong.

Discussion groups are based on speculation

I’m going to speculate that blood gas will explain a lot

So they were either murdered, victims of suicide, or it was accidental.

The NYT is quoting sources that a gas leak is not suspected and the HVAC is not faulty.

Pills were found strewn about Ms Arakawa’s body. Other sources are speculating that she committed suicide by multiple drug intoxication. Hackman was fatally dosed, probably with help, either knowingly or unknowingly by his spouse. She knocked over the meds and the dog licked it up.

I just got back from work, so I can finally comment about this. I'm very saddened by his loss. Gene was an icon in American cinema. So much grit in everything he did, and a unique presence on the screen that can't be duplicated. I've watched him in Heist, Enemy of the State, Unforgiven and several others. This weekend I'll pull out my DVD of The French Connection and watch what a masterpiece he put on.

RIP Gene - and RIP Betsy. Condolences to his many colleagues on the screen.

Foul play would rule out murder but not suicide. I think he died naturally. She died by suicide or accidental OD. The dog ate some pills beside her body and died. The other dog wasn’t a vacuum cleaner

Just watched Extreme Measures, I forgot what a great villain Gene Hackman could play.
Or an evil genius for comedic effect, like Lex Luthor in the Christopher Reeve Superman movies in the '70s and '80s. Or playing an quiet obsessive, like in The Conversation. Hackman was such an all-around versatile "everyman" actor in so many movies, TV guest roles, and even on Broadway. (Does anyone know if he ever had a starring role in a network TV series?)

It has not been confirmed that the dog ate pills. You flat out made that up. The police say the dog was found in a crate and may have died of starvation. The 2 other surviving dogs were not confined. Both Hackman and his wife apparently had been dead for quite awhile.

It's an unfortunate event and is being investigated.
Once again, the Oscar telecast should give Hackman a proper tribute. His contributions to their industry were immense. His talents as an actor were truly unique...

You missed the part, or more likely chose to ignore it, where I stated “I think”. I was going off the information available at the time, that the dog was found “in a closet” close to Ms Arakawa.

So what’s your point? Something happened weeks ago to someone you don’t know, that is newsworthy and people discuss it on an open internet discussion forum. And that sets off your false indignation?

Yeah, you can think whatever you please. Inane comments like the "other dog wasn't a vacuum cleaner "show a lack of class.

This is an "In Memoriam" forum. There are plenty of other sites where you can spew childish nonsense.
May they rest in peace...
