Gene McDaniels

Sadly singer Gene McDaniels passed away today at the age of 76.
His most popular songs were "Tower of Strength" & "100 lbs of Clay". My personal favorite is "Point Of No Return".

RIP Mr McDaniels.

I was a Freshman in high school when I first heard 100lbs of clay..and I was blown away.

Also Dan Peek of America died yesterday I believe..he hadn't toured with the group since I believe 1977..he had found religion and wanted to devote his recordings to Christian music.

An awful lot of people are dying lately, no? Lots of them clustered in that generation.

Great voice, and he left us with some great memories... A Hundred Pounds Of Clay peaked at #3 3/20/61; Tower of Strength peaked at #5 10/02/61; Chip Chip peaked at #10 1/20/62; and Point of No Return peaked at #21 8/04/62.

He did have a great voice. Didn't hear much from him on the pop charts after the early 60s. Anyone know what he was up to in later years?

like me, he was up to 230 lbs.............seriously, I heard he was a producer, and his final years pretty much of a recluse.

Hadn't heard much of him lately, but I had once heard that at some point toward his run on the singles chart, he began insisting that he be called "Eugene". The theory was also advanced that this was part of a general attitude change that could have been a factor in the end of his presence on the charts. I don't know if there's any truth to this. Personally, I think the general wave that swept over the industry with the British Invasion was probably the major contributor the end of his chart run. He certainly was in the same boat with a number of similar performers (the late Brook Benton comes to mind).

Agree that this is sad news and that

Although it's not one, I consider "Point of No Return" a novelty record, because I compare his drawn-out "a-a-a-a-and" to the voice of Allan Sherman! It sounded like he was "over-singing". Not that I don't like the record....not at all....I just kinda think of snickering when I hear that. (I'm sure this was deliberate, but I dunno the point he was making.)

On "Tower of Strength" there's that super-sad trombone & the over-sung "Walk out the DOAH!!" Semi-novelty....

This is not an insult to "Eugene." That's just how I felt....maybe because I was 3 or 4 years old at the time, family influenced me....maybe they were laughing too. I dunno. We'll miss you, Eugene.

"Tower of Strength" was written by Burt Bacharch and Hal David.....Burt has thing for a Brass(trombome and trumpet) or Piano Into on 80% of his compositions
Prominent Trombone/trumpet intro's burt's music:
What the world need's is love
tower of strength
wishin and hopin' - dusty
what's new pussycat - tom jones
always something there to remind me- dionne warwich version
just don't know what to do with myself - dionne warwick version
i'll never falling in love again- elvis costello and dionne warwick
god give me strength - elvis costello
magic moments - perry como (little trombone hiccup at beinning and triple note at intervals thru-out the song) Burt is a very creative and clever composer..

Hasbrook Heights is another one with both piano intro and brass bridge.

My favorite part of "Point of no Return" is Gene's final vocal just before the instrumental out of the song when he goes.."uh uh uh uh uh"

Sorry to hear about Gene's passing. Weird weird coincidence... Haven't visited this board (60s/70s) in a while, but earlier today I was "listening" to MusicChoice on my TV - The Oldies Channel - and heard "Point of No Return"... I was thinking, while I love the artist, he has ZERO soul. Really strange when later I came upon this thread.

there is a great 3cd box set of all the Burt Bacharach and Hal David music, actually "Tower of Strength" was co-written by Bob Hilliard, then Hal David came along and he and Burt put a string of hits, un-matched in Pop music. Well, except maybe, Lennon/McCartney.

He may not have had the soul you desired, but I sure liked his style.

I don't think you did ... Why would you post: "He may not have had the soul you desired"??

There was no desire on my part, just an observation. I loved G.M.'s music. Now can we drop it???????
