On one of the prep services I use headlined; "Soul Singer Gene McDaniels Dead". A great singer? Yes. A 'soul' singer? Not so much.

ChrisInMI said:Two other facts you're probably all aware of but I thought I'd mention anyway:
1. Gene wrote "Feel Like Makin' Love," which became a #1 Pop, R&B and Easy Listening (AC) hit for Roberta Flack in 1974.
2. "Point Of No Return" was the last song played on November 22, 1963, on KLIF in Dallas, TX, before they totally stopped the music and went to wall-to-wall coverage of the JFK assassination. They played it as an oldie or "Klif Klassic." (The Chiffons' "I Have a Boyfriend" was the song playing when the first news bulletin came on, but they played a few more songs after that.) Somewhat ironic in that America was at the point of no return at that moment regarding its innocence.
OT but, has anyone ever stopped to think how many different songs called "Point Of No Return" were recorded over the years? There were hits with that same title in the '80s by Expose and Nu Shooz. I'm sure there are others too.

Back OT... I'm surprised to hear the comments that Gene McDaniels lacked "soul". Depends on your definition, I guess. I always thought the guy poured a lot of his energy and himself into his music.
Just a personal taste thing, but I was never particularly crazy about "100 pounds of Clay"...admittedly a good song. OTOH, "Tower of Strength" was one of the first 45s I ever bought. I've never gotten tired of it. It currently resides on my iPod (in CD digital glory) along with "Chip Chip" and "Point of No Return"
