GENE VALICENTI TO WPRO WEEKENDS

Channel 10 anchor Gene Valicenti starts a weekend talk show on WPRO and 99.7 starting this Saturday 9AM-noon. The story is in All Access.

That is the time slot Cordischi is on. His show is still listed on the website. Personally I like Scott's show but don't think it belongs on the station anymore. Valicenti is a known name in the market and it's a good move to put him on the air.
Valicenti will be up against a holistic show and a couple of financial ones on WHJJ. HA! Financial shows on the station that can't find a budget, not that it's anyone's fault there.

Gene is great. He's my favorite news anchor in this market. His credibility will translate well on the radio. I've heard him fill in for people in the past. He speaks with knowledge and authority. A very respectable guy. I wish him well on WPRO. I hope it works out nicely for all involved.

There must be more to this. . .

This move makes no sense for Gene. Why would the number one anchor in the market want to give up his Saturdays to do a radio show? This is more about NBC10 then WPRO. For WPRO, I think it's a good move. But this says things must not all be well at 10. As we know with media budgets, maybe they are considering not renewing his big fat contract to be a news reader.

This is NOT Gene saying, "Boy this is cool I get a weekend radio show"! In all farness how much can Citadel pay him for three hours? There is more to this than meets the eye.

If I was a talent of Mr. Valicenti's stature I would prefer being at Alpine Country Club on Saturday mornings, NOT the Wampanoag Trail. Could Gene be getting groomed for a full time spot at PRO? If I am Dan Yorke, this would make me nervous.

The Mario Hilario Show

;D

When people visit from out of town and tune in WJAR in their hotel rooms, I always wondered how hard they laugh when they hear the name Mario Hilario. People must feel like they are visiting Cartoon city.

I've found most out-of-towners watch ABC6.

OK, let's do inside baseball. Maybe we can even get Holland Cooke to weigh in. Now that Gene has "his own" show on WPRO, does he risk his journalistic integrity? Most would agree that a local news anchor is different from a talk radio host. For example, can he say a local elected offical is a bad guy? Can he say he supports a particular politician? Or like Dan Yorke, can he call public officials stupid?

Talk radio 101 says, "hosts must have an opinion about everything!" This is no longer a little cross promotion fill in gig. THIS is his OWN show. Or, does he just do a watered down version and take a stand on nothing?

I have NO inside information, however something is up with this show. A guy who makes as much money as Gene ain't going to get up early on Saturdays JUST to talk on the radio. Any thoughts?

I was wondering the same thing.Alot of us were speculating on someone leaving,Leaning towards Dan when they fliped Buddy and Dan's timeslot.I am sticking with my prediction. There will be a major change on WPRO by years end.

There was still that one guy who I remember coming to this board about a year ago. He wanted to know a few things about Providence radio because he said that he had been hired as a talk show host by a Providence station. I'm just going to assume that something fell through. That guy hasn't been heard from since.

Sky Net,

I wouldent read to much into that one. It may have been someone who knows nothing about Providence being promised the world and a plate of Oysters filled with Pearls from WALE.Do you know how many stories are out there about people being told about the next best thing at WALE that did'nt make it to this board.
Just look at the broken promises or BS from WALE.Big John afternoon oldies show comes to mind.About a year ago if you remember they seemed to have had a pretty good line up.Where did that go?That lasted what a month?? ???

Good to see Gene V going to PRO. He'll do well there. As for the other guy, it appears 990 did it again.
If they had the sense to put some money into the place and run it properly, they'd have a chance. Sad to see what Southeastern New England's biggest AM signal has become.

So I tune in to hear Gene this morning and after saying his name about 15 times, he announces the lead topic will be North Korea. North Korea??? Listen folks, I understand it's a hot part of out planet right now, but people in Woonsocket aren't discussing Kim Jong Il over Saturday breakfast! Then he says the second topic will be Ambercrombie and Fitch. The third topic was going to be TV talk.

You just land the most well known TV news anchor in the market to debut on your station and he opens with North Korea? LOCAL Gene. . .I am sure Paul G. thinks of Mr, Valicenti as this well connected local TV guy and wants him to play up that. For God sake's he couldn't find ONE local topic to open his brand new show with? Local TV guy with tons of contacts and he does North Korea. For the premier show, it fell very flat, sorry. Take the teleprompter away from some of these folks and they seem a bit lost. You only get one chance to make a first impression. This broadcast was poorly prepared. Come out w/ guns a blazin! Maybe ever have a good story to break live on your first show. How long did he know this day was coming?

Oh so after announcing all these topics, what's he talking about 40 minutes into the show? That tired old school (maybe Cranston) topic of having to take the prayer down. TRAIN WRECK

I still think something is up on the Trail. Gene said, "I don't golf and I'm not very good around the house, so I thought I'd play radio for three hours". I ain't buying it.

The negative of being the Number one Anchor in town is that you have to behave yourself. They need a nutcase like me to put on the air. Somebody that isn't afraid who he offends. You've got to admit that it would make for some great radio.

However as much as I like Gene, don't expect any fireworks. He has already been trained to conduct himself like a gentleman and to be on his best behavior at all times. That works great for a TV anchorman. But not so well for a radio show. I still wish everybody well. I hope it works out. However the more I think about it, the more reasons I can come up with why it might not.

Something tells me N1WVQ had some bad luck over @ WALE...

That wasn't my quote.

I am pleased that Gene is on Sat., Too many investment programs. holistic program boring, not that I disagree with traditional and alternative medicine, but, many of the tests are not covered by insurance. I am surprised that the practicioners are doing so well.

Gene is refreshing, beats listening to Chuck, Margaret and Grandma incessant callers to WSRS

Great

Re: Just as I predicted

Just three weeks into his "new" weekend radio show, Gene goes on vacation. Just as I have suggested, what is a high paid TV anchor doing on weekend local radio? As B.B. King once sang, "the thrill is gone". What was even funnier, was the guy filling in said, "Gene is gone on a pre planned vacation, but when he comes back next week he will be here every Saturday forever"! Are you kidding me. . .forever?

Listen, this TV news reader won't be here six months from now. Some guy making well into six figures and wearing Armani suits won't want to get his ass outta bed on Saturday mornings to take telephone calls. That is, if he can "GET" telephone calls.

Then to make matters worse, the station that bills itself "Your station of Record" (whatever that means) has as it's prime Gene guest Bob Venturini! The Hour With Bob guy?? He's running for an office that nobody cares about and he's a flaming idiot! The best WPRO can do is get a third tier canidate for Lt. Gov? At least that Kapstein guy can talk baseball. Bring Matt Allen back to Saturdays. I heard he just got married and can probably use the extra $12.00 an hour.

Boy, it's a shame nobody can muster a challenge to these folks on the Trail.

Seems that Management types have an incredbly difficult time in thinking outside the box. They all do what they hear other guys do. Some radio station in Phoenix probably hired a TV news anchor for weekends. So the resident genius at WPRO decided that it was a good idea. Let's try that here.

Not many people in the business seem to be able to create an original idea. Not a single original thought in their head. It's all about just doing what some other station is doing. That is the biggest shame in all this. When you come to the realization that these programmers can't even think for themselves. Whenever the talent isn't busy stealing ideas from each other, you've got Management doing it too.

I'm not limiting this to radio though. People in TV do the same crap. The only difference is that TV Thieves make a hell of a lot more money than Radio thieves do.
