Hi Troy, Gene Werley Jr. here. My pop is alive & well handling sales duties at WLEV/WCTO. He's trying to finish raising 5 kids (does it ever really end?), spending time with his wife and two beagles. He recently got very involved in buying and selling used books. I don't see him nearly as much as I wish, but that's what happens when you live an hour away. Anything else you'd like to know????

Yes I did actually. I started at WSAN in 1984 and was there when they went from full service AC to country. I left in October '85 for the 5pm-sign off shift at WGPA. In November of '86 I was named PD & PM drive (yippppeeee!)I left GPA in December of '88 for T-102 (WAVT). I was moved to mid-days and assistant MD/PD in Feb '89. I left in July '93 to do sales & PM drive at WMGH. About the same time I landed PT Sunday nights at WBHT-HOT 97 Avoca when it was launched. In May of '94 I left radio to be a stay-at-home-dad. I went back to WAVT to do PT fill in work and Sunday afternoons in August of '94. In May of '97 I was named AM drive host of WSPI - Mt. Carmel. On March 27, 1998 I left radio and I've been trying to get back in ever since!
Can you help a poor lost soul???????? Sniff Sniff.

Rumor has it that Timmer is looking for board ops/DJ's at WGPA. I wasn't going to say anything for fear everyone would laugh because that is a common story at the revolving door of 'GPA, but you say you used to work there, so you may want to go back "home." lol :)

Thanks for the "tip". I actually chatted with Joe a long time ago about a possible return. He wanted me to sell my own show and spilt the revenue with him. I'm sure it's an OK arrangement for the right person and maybe I was spoiled. When I worked there I had the owner, Hank Chadwick pounding the streets to sell the station. Anyway, the whole reason I want back into radio is so I don't have to sell anymore. When I left radio I sold cars for 3 years and I've been selling print ads for 5.
Real funny thing about GPA. I currently work part-time for a company located in the same building as their studio. I keep score at Reading Phillies' games for Baseball Info Solutions.

Classic Joe Timmer. :) He really is a good guy. He's just old school. I worked at 'GPA from 1999 to 2000. It was my first commercial radio job. I was bewildered at this station that wanted me to "sell time for my own show!" Timmer is of the old school that you should sell your own time. I think every board op that goes through WGPA is asked by Timmer to try and "sell." I actually gave it an honest whirl in the Spring of 2000, but believe me, 'GPA is a difficult station for the non-sales type guy as myself to sell. At the time, Timmer's main sales guys were himself and Bobby Koch, who is now at WEST in Easton. Bobby is a nice guy and tried his best to more comfortingly groom me into sales, opposite of Timmer's more stern, short and simple "Sell!" command. LOL But it wasn't for me either way. I made a few sales, but it was difficult. Maybe 'GPA sales gave me a bad taste for radio sales in general. I assume selling for a big FM station like The Hawk would be much easier, but I'm still not meant for sales. Nevertheless, if you're a good, faithful board op, at least when I was there, Timmer usually overlooked the sales part after awhile and just was happy to have a good board op. To this day, I'm sure Timmer is back to being the one and only sales guy. Bobby Koch was a rare breed ... a full-time WGPA salesman.
______________

Gene - You said you worked at WGPA in the mid 80s. I'm curious what working at 'GPA was like at those times, pre the Jolly Joe days. Was the station in the same spot that it is now? I know it used to be in another part of Bethlehem, but I'm not sure when the move occurred. Something tells me 1982 or so, so I'm assuming you were in the same building.

What was 'GPA like in those days? I'm assuming pretty much a straight-ahead AC or MOR (whatever the genre was called at the time)? Did the station do well in the ratings? I'm just curious to hear about 1980s WGPA.
______________

Did Tiger Joe Mclain have obscure tastes in music? I heard he was a psychedellic head.

Joe was such a nice guy. I met him while working at the old WLEV (during the 96.1 days). He was on after me one weekend, and we talked for an hour about radio - where I had been, where he had been... Turns out he had worked at WEEU back in the 50's or 60's - before his WAEB days. I had spent time at WEEU as well, so we were comparing notes. Nothing had EVER changed there!

Also, I remember bumping into Joe online in the late 90's. He made some life-altering changes around that time, which I will keep OFF this board. But, the point being he was WAY happier than he had ever been. Hopefully, he still is!

first time i was in WEEU was around oct 65.......shocked to see an engineer running the board when whum and wraw were working their own boards........

little touch of the big time in old reading town.......

By the time I arrived at WEEU around 1990, the "big time" touch had long since left. I guess I have to give WEEU props for staying on the radar as long as they have. But, man...what a small-minded operation. As I've said for years, it's just as important to learn how NOT to do things as it is the other way around. By that standard, WEEU was certainly an education.
