Get Ready For 1010XL on April 2

Yep WIOJ will no longer be as of April 2 when the station goes Sports as 1010XL "Jacksonville Sports Radio" as the station will go 50kw in the day and 30kw at night basically giving the whole market a clear signal for sports. This is a good move for 1010 as they should be able to knock off WFXJ and WZNZ in ratings in about year after start up. All Access has the story and so does the Florida Times-Union.

How many sports stations does Jacksonville need? After all, this is a market that's barely in the top 50 nationally, that can barely support an NFL franchise, not to mention a market fighting for the ears of Gator and Seminole fans. Go figure.

Just like Fort Walton - Sportz on radio is crap. I want to hear music thats it not some cheesy show. We have "the ticket" which totally sucks.. IMHO and needs to be either a talk/coast to coast am or an 80s station (yea)

Rob

Amazing how Jax AM operators are willing to scrap over fractions of a point in sports radio yet allow WOKV and its huge cume to sit unperturbed. ???

Look at it this way..I see that they are doing it because we never have had a good sports station at 50kw here. Basically this could be death for both WFXJ and WZNZ...think about it..both of those stations are only 5kw and I can barley pick them up at night..with 1010 having 30kw at night it makes sense.

To the point that they fight over percentage points of sports fans really isn't much of an issue. Sports stations do not sell ratings. Advertisers buy with passion for the most part. Even if you combined FXJ and ZNZ Men #s, they would barely dent the top 10.

As to 1010 wiping out any other station....I believe that was said when The Ball came (and went) on; then ESPN 1460 came on, that was supposed to kill FXJ. And then that other fly-by-nighter that came through (Dino Costa, anyone?) These guys going to another frequency won't mean a hill of beans in the big scheme of things. It isn't like they are even re-inventing the wheel over there. They're just moving the wheel to another place..round up the usual suspects .ain't nothing new except that folks in St. Simons Island might get to hear what some guy on his cell phone thinks about the Leftwich controversy.....oooh, pinch you , St. Simons.....

The only issue I ever had with 1460s signal was at night at the Blanding and 295 area. I don't get the upgrade.

Not being an engineer, can an engineer tell me what the 50KW upgrade will do for 1010am. (Isn't their signal pretty decent in metro Jax?)and what is the cost difference to juicing up 50KW as opposed to 5 or 10? thanks, from the curious mind.....

May all three co-exist and profit.

Ballou is already talking on-air about XL and Hicken and Prosser are alluding to doing mornings somewhere??. Is this some kind of flip with ZNZ cause people don't usually plug a move to the competition when they are still on the other station. unless ZNZ is still in the game and Frangie is moving to XL and Hicken/Prosser are staying put. My ideal lineup would be Hicken/Prosser, Ballou, Prisco, Dempsey-McManus. I listen to sports talk a lot, I've heard the 3 songs each music station is pounding and I'm not a right winger so I'm not going to listen to political talk. Plus these guys are allowed to have personalities, something you can't do on music radio.

first Ballou is not a professional (In my opinion)
Secound, and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't their signal going to be directional.
and everytime a station switches format mhsbroncos 2005 seems to think that other station will fall by the side.
this 1010xl Can Not make it without proper promotion

Rick Ballou is not a professional?? I know it's your opinion, but his work at Sporting News Radio speaks for itself. Many of us would be lucky enough to have that gig on our resume.

I heard 1010 will have Hicken/Prosser Morning Drive / Sean Woodland from Channel4 with Tom McManus 10-noon(?) Ballou noon-3; Frangie with Dempsey from 3-7 (the times are my approximations, but that is the lineup in that order that I was told). My hope is 1460 runs wall-to-wall ESPN Radio. I would really enjoy the entire Mike&MIke show in the morning and Dan Patrick in the early afternoon.

Isn't Greg Larson still on 1010? I guess he'll be moved either to nights or maybe he'll bounce to the afternoons at 1460.

Not only are the Mike & Mike Show and Dan Patrick Shows very entertaining, but Colin Cowherd (10AM-1PM ET) is a riot.

I am near Tallahassee Do u think AM 1010XL will reach west of Jacksonville to Tallahssee when they update the FCC to 50,000 watts daytime?? Like when Tampa's AM 820 used to be sports before they flip it to spanish with 50,000 watts daytime.

If it does, you might run into some interference from WJEP 1020 in
Ochlockonee, GA. It's running 10kw-D with a nondirectional tower. It
comes in here east of Tallahassee, although not with a real strong signal.

..Or maybe 1010XL'll drown it out..

Yeah AM 1020 from Thomasville has an okay singal but not as storng as they used to be. We have to wait and see on April 2nd when they flip it to sports on 1010XL.

Recalling the patterns I seen for the new 1010 (now) WIOJ, Don't count your chickens on real decent coverage westerly of Baldwin, FL's vicinity. Day and night the patterns are concentrating on the MetroJax, very roughly saying, east of US Rt 301. It should be a great signal. Use 50kw vice 10kw - The range isn't TERRIBLY different, but the signal stregnth will be better to combat all the noise out on the streets (utilities, etc).

If the talent noted earlier jumps ship, and the production is smooth/slick and the promotion is there, they might make a couple of bux. Running all that local talent is expensive, but some of it is probably actually leased time anyhow. I'd think Fergie is...

From the cheap seats,

Rocky W>

Even with 30 kW at night, the nighttime interference free contour still won't cover all of Duval County, just about half and slivers of Clay and St. Johns.

So what about play-by-play?

WOKV: Jacksonville Jaguars
WZNZ: MLB on ESPN Radio, NBA on ESPN Radio, BCS on ESPN Radio, Florida State Seminoles, Atlanta Braves, JU Dolphins, Miami Dolphins
1010XL: UNF Ospreys....anything else? Maybe the Florida Marlins possibly to try and counter the Braves?
WFXJ: Florida Gators, Jacksonville Suns, Westwood One (NFL, NCAA, NHL, and Golf)

1010XL should add the Marlins to give them a nice nightly play-by-play schedule of games. They could also try to add some other college networks with Georgia, Georgia Tech, FSU (if they leave WZNZ), or UM.

They have a chance to pick up Georgia I believe....WHJX had carried the Georgia football games, but I wonder if they kept the contract since fliping to Spanish simulcasting 92.5 WFJO. You never know one day that they could snag the Jags away from Cox, but I could not see it fully happening since Cox has a big advantage with the broadcast since you can get it on three stations (690, 96.9 and 106.5). Hopefully 1010XL will do well. Later.
