Get Ready For 1010XL on April 2

Why all this talk about AM radio. Let's face it the only AM station worth a damn is WOKV. The only other time anyone in Jax will ever pay attention to any of the others is if there's a Gator or Noles playoff at stake. It'll be a long way off before Jax is ever close to being called a sports town. We can barely hold on to the Jaguars. If they ever leave then Jax falls back 30 years.

Al, basically, some of us are interested (not all, not most, admittedly) what's going on with all the licensed (and any unlicensed) stations in the area. A few folks here paid thier dues working at AM stations before moving on to FM or Television stations, some at local stations in this area. It's OK for anyone not interested in a topic to just keep moving along until they see something pertinent to thier broadcast interests...

Have a nice evening...

I think it was simply stupid that 1460 also flip, but then again maybe???

So when is 1010XL going to 50,000 watts? Clearly they are not yet. 1460 came in better here than 1010 is. I'm near the airport and the signal is terrible.

I saw that 1010XL now has Gator Baseball which was previously on 1460. The Florida Times-Union had the following:

No ESPN radio shows locally

Jacksonville sports listeners were surprised Monday when former all-sports talk station WZNZ (1460 AM) switched its format to a variety of Christian talk shows.

WZNZ executive Henry Hoot said the station will retain its rights to ESPN for the remainder of its six-month contract, even though it won't carry any ESPN programming during that time. However, Hoot said the station will continue to air ESPN commercials and promos.

Hoot said WZNZ will fulfill its contract to air Jacksonville University baseball games this spring and Florida State football games next fall.

So JU and FSU remain on 1460 for now....but where did the Braves go? Are they still on 1460, 1010, or off the air in JAX?

Also, I thought FSU moved to ISP Sports...how can 1460 still have a contract when we don't even know the Tallahassee flagships for ISP yet?

It's not like Jacksonville needs another teaching-preaching station, but I'm not surprised they flipped. Three sports stations is too much for any market, especially when the total share for sports is generally under a 2.

it's pitiful when all jacksonville radio can muster is talk about an no show 1010 am station geez louise

For those of you in St Johns County, 1420 has gone to ESPN radio.

::) That's 'cause all the "Good Guys" are long gone!

Yes, Phil, WBIX was Religious.

I know you worked in Jacksonville at the Big Ape and are interested in Jacksonville and Daytona Beach radio. You might be interested to know (if you don't already) that 1010 was originally the fourth Top 40 in the area, as WZRO, Jax Beach (1,000 watts, daytime only), known as Cavalier Radio. The jocks were called Cavalier Bob and things like that. I think they lasted until about 1964, when they went dark. For some time (a few years if I remember correctly) the frequency was silent until WBIX signed on with 10,000 watts.

BRIAN? as in Brian Rowland? I asked this earlier this year and I forgot the answer..Where's Marty? BIG APE!

You remember them, Bob! Twin Ten radio it was. They sounded a little like WAPE at the time... laid back, infoirmal kind of down home. It's hard to believe that Jacksonville had four Top 40s at the same time... full-time WPDQ on 600, daytime WAPE on 690, daytime WZRO on 1010 and full-time WMBR on 1460 (and on FM at, as I remember 96.9).

Sorry, BIG APE, I'm Brian, but not Brian Rowland.

I'm sure the 1010 WJXL 50kw signal is on the air. Driving around town in [the inland portions of] St. Augustine, Palm Coast and Ormond Beach in my car, the signal ROCKED!! What an gigantic improvement. Audio sounds great, very SOLID signal. Good on them. Hope they can pay thier bills and make a return on thier capital investment with this much better signal.

I've got them in the later 90s as "heeeeh-hawww" Chris Edwardth's Redneck Rock and Roll, Southern Rock Favorites on aircheck tape somewhere with that Home Shopping Show stuff too. In AM Stereo. A litle mishmash of programming to get the bills paid....

Surf 1010, a great moniker that I am surprised hasn't been used more.
