According to this link from Wikipediacyberdad said:Didn't someone else cover that right after Thunderclap Newman's original? Jackson Browne perhaps?
Anyway, one thing's pretty certain....at some point the song undoubtedly got airplay on CBW. There's enough variety in CBC programming that sooner or later they get around to playing everything!

cyberdad said:My mistake, I've never received them here, but not for the previously stated reason....... (I thought they were 860), but I see CBW's frequency is 990 and here at night it is strictly Cuba at night and occassionally in the background Radio Disney at 990 out of Orlando to the n.e.drt said:I've never been able to receive CBW here in St. Petersburg, there is a local talk station on that frequency with Radio Reloj heard in the background.

I've heard them in Pensacola a couple of times, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for them to make the hop across the gulf. Of course your local...and for that matter, R. Reloj....complicates matters. Still, CBW has a killer signal. That's true in the daytime as well. I've driven by their stick, which is located in some deep, level, prairie soil with great conductivity.

For whatever reason 860 from Toronto doesn't get out all that well. Which is not to say it's a lousy signal. But CFMZ which is diplexed on the same stick east of Toronto seems to do a little better.
As for CBW, as I said they have a killer signal. But it used to be the just the 4th best in Winnipeg! CJOB (680) does better (daytime), even though it's directional. As did the "late great" CKY (580) and CKRC (630). I used to get into Winnipeg 2-3 times a year on business trips. I could follow "KY-58" daytime all the way to Nebraska before WNAX and WIBW finally trashed it.
Sad to see CKY gone because it was a great station....especially late '90s when Burton Cummings hosted afternoon drive, and would routinely bring in stuff from his own record collection. Who knew that the guy was/is a walking music encyclopedia.

Cyber, you'll be able to pick up his former Guess Who? band mate, ex-BTO front man Randy Bachman, on CBW in about an hour ('Vinyl Tap' - 7pm Saturday nights on CBC Radio 1). 8)

cyberdad said:I'm back in the Pensacola area for our usual summer beach getaway. I haven't totally unpacked, but I took out the SRF 37 Walkman last night night and tried 990. What I found was a fantastic north-south path to the Carribbean. Lousy path to Mexico and most of North America. Virtually no atmospheric noise due to an absence of the usual summer thunderstorms.
Anyway, what I was getting was a very good signal on a music and call-in program in Spanish. Unfortunately, it faded right at the time for a TOH ID. Didn't seem to be Cuban....at least it certainly wasn't R. Progresso or R. Rebelde. There was something else in Spanish in the background, along with one other station that seemed to be in English and might have been CBW, but it I doubt it.
The reason I doubt it is because the "1-A" clears from the Midwest were almost totally absent...including the usually robust WLW. KMOX was in, but very weak. Meanwhile, the usual Cubans and other Carribeans were blasting in. Curiously, however, Mexico was pretty much absent. XEEP was in on 1060, but getting trashed by WLNO.
I'll bring out the "heavy artillery" later in the week and post if I do manage to snag CBW.
