Getting 990 CBW tonight

This is a little surprising to me. Usually CBW is a semi-regular visitor, during 'DX season'. Winnipeg is about 1050 miles west of my location. Is this unusual for this time of year?

~BG

Maybe... I'm in central MA and had an oldies station on 1110 overriding WBT Charlotte NC last night and a few nites ago. But no calls.
And 890 in Chi was stronger than WCBS on 880.

So there's something in the air...

CBW is strong nightly all year long here in Northern Illinois. Probably about a 700-800 mile hop. Still, it's not unusual for them to throw some splatter onto local WMVP any time of the year.

New log last night: 1400 CKGR Golden, BC w/ EZ Rock IDs, new #383. Also heard an unID 990 w/ SS music and bumpers, likely XECL Mexicali La Rockola but not 100% sure.

CBW was coming in fairly last night around 2300 local. Tonight, CFPR 860 Prince Rupert is back in w/ CBC Radio One programming o/u KPAM, so a nice summer opening!

Thunderclap Newman? :)

Didn't someone else cover that right after Thunderclap Newman's original? Jackson Browne perhaps?

Anyway, one thing's pretty certain....at some point the song undoubtedly got airplay on CBW. There's enough variety in CBC programming that sooner or later they get around to playing everything!

According to this link from Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Something_in_the_Air

Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker released "Something in the Air" in 1994; I looked up the Jackson Browne discography and did not find "Something in the Air", which doesn't necessarily mean that Jackson Brown didn't do it.

At any rate, trying to stray back on topic, I've never been able to receive CBW here in St. Petersburg, there is a local talk station on that frequency with Radio Reloj heard in the background.

I've heard them in Pensacola a couple of times, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for them to make the hop across the gulf. Of course your local...and for that matter, R. Reloj....complicates matters. Still, CBW has a killer signal. That's true in the daytime as well. I've driven by their stick, which is located in some deep, level, prairie soil with great conductivity.

My mistake, I've never received them here, but not for the previously stated reason....... (I thought they were 860), but I see CBW's frequency is 990 and here at night it is strictly Cuba at night and occassionally in the background Radio Disney at 990 out of Orlando to the n.e.

I was wondering what your local on 990 was given the blowtorch (sort of) up the road from you in Orlando! :).

For whatever reason 860 from Toronto doesn't get out all that well. Which is not to say it's a lousy signal. But CFMZ which is diplexed on the same stick east of Toronto seems to do a little better.

As for CBW, as I said they have a killer signal. But it used to be the just the 4th best in Winnipeg! CJOB (680) does better (daytime), even though it's directional. As did the "late great" CKY (580) and CKRC (630). I used to get into Winnipeg 2-3 times a year on business trips. I could follow "KY-58" daytime all the way to Nebraska before WNAX and WIBW finally trashed it.

Sad to see CKY gone because it was a great station....especially late '90s when Burton Cummings hosted afternoon drive, and would routinely bring in stuff from his own record collection. Who knew that the guy was/is a walking music encyclopedia.

CKY was a great station. I used to listen to it in Northern Minnesota during the day. Great format & signal.

Correction: In an earlier post, I said CFMZ and CJBC were diplexed on the same stick east of Toronto. Actually I meant to say west....just off the 401 freeway. Probably about 15 miles
(or 25 clicks) WNW of downtown.

Cyber, you'll be able to pick up his former Guess Who? band mate, ex-BTO front man Randy Bachman, on CBW in about an hour ('Vinyl Tap' - 7pm Saturday nights on CBC Radio 1). 8)

CBW 990 has an amazing signal, often easily outblasting both KOMO 1000 and CKNW 980 in Bellingham WA on winter nights.....

Yours Truly is also a MAJOR Vinyl Tap w/Randy Bachman fan. I listen EVERY Saturday night. GREAT show.....

Sorry I missed it! Just picked up your post today. Assuming Vinyl Tap is a weekly feature, I'll try again. Unless I'm near a computer, it'll have to be online these next couple of weeks. Otherwise I'll probably have to wait. I'm in Pensacola and New Orleans respectively the next two Saturdays. In Pensacola, I have snagged CBW a couple of times, but not in the summer (and besides 7pm would be too early). In New Orleans, there's a local on 990 with the stick right by my hotel (or at least that's where it was before Katrina).

As for Burton Cummings, he turned out to be very good broadcaster. Great delivery, witty (something of a dry sense of humor), loaded with music/music trivia knowledge, and jumped right into reading weather forecast, commercials, etc.....and was quite good at it!

Belated Canada Day Greetings!

....Jack

I'm back in the Pensacola area for our usual summer beach getaway. I haven't totally unpacked, but I took out the SRF 37 Walkman last night night and tried 990. What I found was a fantastic north-south path to the Carribbean. Lousy path to Mexico and most of North America. Virtually no atmospheric noise due to an absence of the usual summer thunderstorms.

Anyway, what I was getting was a very good signal on a music and call-in program in Spanish. Unfortunately, it faded right at the time for a TOH ID. Didn't seem to be Cuban....at least it certainly wasn't R. Progresso or R. Rebelde. There was something else in Spanish in the background, along with one other station that seemed to be in English and might have been CBW, but it I doubt it.

The reason I doubt it is because the "1-A" clears from the Midwest were almost totally absent...including the usually robust WLW. KMOX was in, but very weak. Meanwhile, the usual Cubans and other Carribeans were blasting in. Curiously, however, Mexico was pretty much absent. XEEP was in on 1060, but getting trashed by WLNO.

I'll bring out the "heavy artillery" later in the week and post if I do manage to snag CBW.

This post made me miss DXing ... haven't done much of it the past few months, and usually don't at home until September or so when the temps cool.
Are you behind WMVP's pattern when you're home? I know 1000 gets a lot weaker at night in the western suburbs, even as close to their towers as Naperville. I ought to try for 990 here in Ohio some night; WMVP is a blaster every night here.
