The commercial load on radio is worse than ever.

My husband lost his job so we wanted to cancel our subscription. They offered us two free months which we took and then dropped it. Two weeks later they called with a 5 months for 19.95 offer we couldn't refuse. Even though the service has definitely gone down hill it's still better than all those freakin commercials. Plus I like having 2 extra public radio channels.

Sounds like they're desperate.

My wife and I were going to drop SiruisXM after our free period ends. I just wish that we could get the music channels only. I don't want to listen to the sports or talk they offer. The music channels I listen to have gotten better since the merger.

I enjoy the decade channels. Unfortunately they've tightened the playlist since the merger.

They offer a "mostly music" package that's, well, mostly music. It's slightly cheaper than a full subscription.

It seems that many people who have thought of giving up XM or did; end up back with XM, not because the only satellite radio company in town is outstanding, but because next to terrestrial radio, it is better.

Maybe Mel could come up with a new promo:

"SXM...... less horrible than terrestrial radio!!" :)

I think that you've nailed it. And satellite will die when internet radio is available in the car.

Ahem, Fonz....it already is! ;D (As I just posted in another thread).

Get an I-phone, download Wunder Radio, Pandora, Shoutcast, AOL Radio (or all of the above, as I did). Then get a cable or fm modulator and viola! Better sound quality than satellite, too. Since the I-phone usage plans typically include unlimited data, its effectively cheaper, as well. NO reason for satellite IMHO anymore.

Yeah but you still have to deal with commercials. So the question then becomes is what you're hearing worth $12.95 for no commercials?

From a person who does not have satellite radio, this is very interesting reading. I listen to over-the-air radio all the time and am satisfied with what is available. Am I bothered by the tight playlists... yeah ... but having interests in a wide variety of music, I just do a lot of channel surfing. You may not get variety on one or two stations, if that's all you listen to, but use a bunch of them, and that does the trick for me. Outside of the non-commercial stations (college), I can relate to the commercial overload but on stations that I truly care about, I'm happy to hear that they have commercials, otherwise they'd go under or maybe have "dollar-a-holler" brokered garbage. It's interesting and perplexing how radio revenue is down so considerably, yet we still have complaints about too many commercials or stop-sets that are too long. After reading posts about satellite radio, I am less inclined to sign up now then ever.

The commercials I hear on regular radio are more numerous than ever but revenue is down. I guess their ad prices are much lower.

Just one guy's opinion, but satellite radio has much less value/appeal for me than it did a few years ago when I signed up. On the plus side they've added some good specialty channels as well as lots of live sports. The downside is they've dumbed down (or eliminated) music channels and lowered the audio quality as the added channels have sucked up available bandwidth.

Then there are those comedy channels that got added.

Comedy channels? I'm referring to these traffic and weather channels. Always good for a laugh with names of roads being mispronounced and voices rendered cartoon-like.

$12.95 for having to listen to commercials? Most of the streams I listen to are commercial free or close to it. Not that there's anything wrong with commercials. Hooray for advertisers and advertising.

I agree with you regarding the music channels on satellite. Ever since the merger they have really narrowed the playlist.
They used to play lots of interesting stuff off the beaten path. Not anymore.

It's always fun to walk into the local grocery store and find their radio system has deeper playlists than SiriusXM now.

BINGO! .....and better audio as well!

The other day, I couldn't have been in my local supermarket for more than fifteen minutes and managed to hear "Such a Night" by the Drifters, and "Starlight, Starbright" by Linda Scott. Wow! I'm sure they were scaring away customers....but Wow!

Would that be the same Linda Scott that sang "I've Told Every Little Star"? I've haven't heard that in a long time on XM and I'm sure I don't have to hold my breath waiting to hear it again on SXM with their "new and improved" (sic) playlists.

I'm not familiar with the Starlight Starbright song by her; she must have a thing about stars in her titles.

That is the same Linda Scott. She had a few other minor hits.
